Landshuter Hochzeit - Medieval festival - Munich

27.Jun - 19.Jul.2009

carandiru
The Landshutter Hochzeit is one of the largest medieval festivals in Europe.
More than 2,000 participants in medieval costumes bring the festival to life to recreate the Late Middle Ages. It commemorates the wedding between Jadwiga, the Polish King's daughter, and Georg, the son of the Duke of Landshut. In the medieval times Bavaria had strong connections with Poland - you can i.e. see Polish and Bavarian emblems on Theatinerkirche at Odeons Platz.

Every four years the medieval wedding is reenacted, and everyone gets carried away with medieval jousting, pageantry, feasting and wedding processions for a short period in the summer.

Can anyone please tell me if there are any related activities going on during the week in Landshut during the "Hochzeit"? I understand the main processions take place at the weekends but is there anything worth seeing during the week? For example, craft fairs and the like?

There are events almost every day, predominately jousting performances but also concerts etc. See the calendar for a full list, although I'm not sure if there are any tickets left. In any event, it's the procession ("Hochzeitszug") on each of the Sundays that is the main attraction, and which is of course free of charge.

So, which of these two events has the most impressive medieval shenanigans?

Landshuter Hochzeit or Frundsbergfest ???

Who went there today? Looks like the rain held off, judging by the webcam. I'll be there for the next two Sundays, it appears – hope the weather Gods keep smiling on Landshut.

How'd you get a first-floor viewpoint?
SharkKicker
Or a second floor view?

We've been there today, great event, well worth the trip! The weather was superb as well
The parade was very nice and the medieval camp is also worth visiting. We wanted to see the knights fights but the show has been sold out already.

It is very difficult to find a parking space if you travel by car, it is probably better to use P+R parking they prepared on the way from Munich, right after the Autobahn exit. We went all the way to Landshut and it took over 30 minutes to find the parking space, all parkings prepared for the event guests were full and closed. The helicopter landing space was empty though

Fiends of friends, whose sons' girlfriends' mother has an office along the route!

That's five degrees of separation, so I probably know this person as well!

Took some decent photos today; I wandered around looking for different vantage points. Didn't have time to organise a ladder, which would have been very helpful. The first one is taken from the fortress hill with some serious zoomage.

This is my most favourist town in the whole world anyway, but this event is just great. Next Sunday is your last chance until 2013.

I was there yesterday and it was a lot of fun.

The parade runs from 2 oclock and last for an hour to 2 hours depending on where you actually stand. Get there early if u want to be able to sit down somewhere... though all the tribune seats and suchlike are all booked out before for 30euro a seat!

So a kerb is probably your best bet for a seat unless u bring your own.

Afterwards everyone very slowly wanders down toward the river to the Zehrplatz and Turnierplatz.

From 18.30 the have knight's games, though apparently tickets sold out well over 6 months ago. The beer garden is really big though, the beer is good and cheap at 5.90 a Maß of the special 5.9% Hochzeits helles, and the food is amazing. With pretty much anything u want there to be honest. (Bavarian wise at least)

In the Zehrplatz biergarten there is also a section cut off where u can basically Big brother style watch all the locals dressed up as if they were in the middle ages go about their lives as if they were in the middle ages... the all cook pig on a fire/grill, the kids play witha medievil version of swing ball etc etc...

Unfortunately we couldn't stay that late but apparently the whole thing is open til 1am and as the evening goes on they have all sorts of performances like fire jugglers etc etc...

It is a really good day out though and a relatively cheap one at that. Be warned though it will be seriously busy.

Entrance to the Zehrplatz is 2euros /person, otherwise everything is free if you don't mind standing.

Get there well before the the parade starts as otherwise you ain't gunna see much...

Oh and they recently moved all the prisoners there to a new prison in landshut, and just for the duration of the festival the old prison has been opened up for viewing. It's only a 10 minute jobbie and it smells a little, but it's free and right on the route from the centre to the beer garden so pop in and have a quick wander round. I think it's got a sign outside saying 'Tavern 1475' or something like that now...

Nothing really specific goes on in the week, they have street performers and music, but no parade and such. Just an excuse to drinks lots i imagine... :-D

I was there yesterday too. There were lots of children and they all seemed very excited about the men with armor and the traditional clothes, etc. For the ladies, the men in the tights they wear were, for the most part, fun to look at. The weather got nicer later in the day and the food and beer was excellent.

OH, my god!! I really wanna go this. Does anyone go this Saturday!? I would like to join you near Munchen city center.
Allershausen
Just to make sure you don't go on the wrong day, there is no parade on Saturday, as shown in these photos, it takes place on Sunday at 2:00pm There are other things on Saturday though.

Does anyone go there tomorrow, 18th, Saturday? I really wanna go!

Greetings,

My name is Joel and I'm new to the forum here. I stumbled upon this discussion on the Landshuter Hochzeit and thought I'd share a bit about my experience there a few weeks ago.

I was at the Landshuter Hochzeit on the last Sunday with my wife. I published three posts on my blog with quite a number of pictures of the event. You're welcome to read them and comment here: Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3.

Overall, it was a great experience and we had a wonderful time.

Nice pics. Text extremely hard to read due to black background.
joelsolomon
That shouldn't be the case, Cinzia. The background is actually white. However, I think that I've experienced this problem with my blog before. The solution: reload the page. Hope it works.
