so i will be visiting europe for the first time and i am as american as it gets so i am wondering what will be appropriate clothing choice while in munich for oktoberfest i tend to wear jeans and 70's and 80's rock t-shirts any suggestions whould be helpful p.s. i also have a dont hassle the hoff t-shirt:)

Go for the Hassle the Hof look. If you've got money to burn then invest in some lederhosen (google it), otherwise go in anything that you don't mind having soaked in beer and anything else that happens to be floating around. Also don't take anything you aren't prepared to lose...

Hi Mikem409. You can wear whatever you like - not everyone dresses in traditional Bavarian clothing for the festival; there are plenty of people there in jeans and t-shirts too. Don't worry!

If you want to get into the spirit of things and dress like the locals, then it'd be best to wait until you arrive and check out one of the discount Trachten shops around Munich. There are a few recommendations already on this forum, so do a search for Tracht or Lederhosen.

Lederhosen aren't everybody's thing:

You'll be fine, as long as you don't go for one of these semi-funny tshirts with lines like 'beer formed this beautiful body' ;-)

And no matter how drunk you get, hats shaped like a beer glass - or any novelty hat for sale within the Wiesn for that matter - are never appropriate to wear. Just because they sell them doesn't mean that you should buy them. They also sell fake smoked salmon (ersatzlachs, I believe it's called) in rolls. Avoid that too.

ersatzlachs, I believe it's called
or even Lachsersatz. I think if you buy it in shops it gets labelled "Seelachs-filet" or something similar.

I'd claim it was deliberate to show just how little I know about the stuff, but I'd be lying.

Pedant.

does anyone know any sites that sells lederhosens for a decent price. I've been looking around and i can only find stuff that are close two four hundred euro. I was hoping to get something that looked good but inexpensive. Anyone lend an idea?
RainKing
C&A. 90 euros. Looks good= retain shape when sopping with beer/urine/vomit. What more could one ask?

yea i have seen other people say that C&A was a good place, but i have looked online for their site and can't find it. Can you copy the url for me. Also i was looking on ebay and found some that where fifty USD, and they looked pretty nice.

First link in Google's search resutls for "C&A". From the landing page, select Germany, and there's a link to "Landhaus & Trachten" in the main navigation.

yea thanks for the help, but i noticed it was in euros and i found a place in pitsburg that sells them for cheaper. Also i was thinking about getting a pair from ebay, but i am not so sure about that one.

I'd be wary of anything purportedly leather sold for less than the C&A price, particularly from outside of Europe. You could end up buying something PVC that in context here in Germany just makes you look like a jerk ...

My girlfriend mentioned something to me about we should purchase at the C&A rather than drop 400 euros or more on somthing that I will only wear once a year.
