### ### stop press ### ###

good to hear that they are introducing plastic mass glasses to the 2005 oktoberfest.

after stock taking they worked out that 36,000 mass glasses disappeared from the lionbrew tent alone, alot of these were tealeafed / broken.

so at least when some mad (insert nationality here) tries to glass you it aint gonna be too serious this year.

prost.

Plastic Maß Krugs?? You have got to be joking!!
Topsy
It was on the front page of the Abendzeitung yesterday. I only read the headline real quick though. Is it for definite, then?
Showem
They are testing them, it's not definite.

In my eye, it's likely to cause more throwing of mass glasses. Most people, even when drunk are unlikely to pull a Begbie and throw their glass. However, with plastic, most will think, "It's not going to really hurt someone," and there will be plenty of tossing at the Ofest. (pun intendend)

its surely just common sense on behalf of the brewery.

if i could organise a piss up in a brewery, sort of thing i would do.

as long as the beer tastes the same and not plasticy.. it dont matter.

Here we go to the old debate of plastic vs. glass. Well I´ll take the bite. I would be really really dissappointed if they did use plastic. Oktoberfest is a lot more than just drinking beer. It´s drinking beer with friends, in a traditional venue, with traditional and contemporary music etc. If one´s going to drink out of a plastic Maß, then one might as well not dress up in Trachtengarb. One might not as well get up on the benches and sing along to "...da liegt a toter fisch im wasser...den machma hin..den machma hin, den machma hin..." or "In München steht ein Hofbräuhaus, oins..." etc. -you get the picture. Hell, one may as well just go to a Bundesliga game and drink from the plastic cups there. For me it´s all about the stimmung. Ok, so in the old days they had stone Krugs, that´s only because glass ones weren´t invented yet. Stimmung, Stimmung! And, to take a quote from Warsteiner - "Mit guten freunden".

Surely the same argument could be made about plastic?

But I agree, I wouldn't enjoy drinking from a plastic cup.

(gross generalisation)

after most people have had one mass they wont realise they have a plastic glass anymore.
AquaticMeringue
At least until they try to "prost" and their cup gets crushed.

You probably saw this in Bild Zeitung over the weekend:

Oktoberfest-Revolution: Kunststoff-Krüge statt Maß aus Glas

At Oktoberfest 2005 the Löwenbräu tent will serve their beer in plastic "glasses" rather than real glass glasses. They reckon the new alternative will be safer (they're unbreakable), easier for the waitresses (plastic glasses are a kilo lighter each), and cheaper with less theft (100,000 glasses go walkies from the festival every year). Only drawback is that they don't make the traditional "klink" sound when toasting.

Prost!

Everyone has several months then to develop and record MP3 files that go "CLINK" and that can be played back through a large table top speaker. Idealy this would have a footpedal activation switch.

Probably a good idea though. The yob factor is on the rise in Germany and I saw more football problems on the TV over the weekend. Blokes in micheal Jackson style masks, sun glasses and hooded sweatshirts. The profi's.

Imagine the carnage if it kicked off in a beer tent???

suppose its fair enough in the childrens tent - but please where the grownups go and drink, lets keep glass.

I don't go in that tent so fine by me!
Keydeck
It's just wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong. However, as with anything, change is inevitable. No doubt it'll spread to the other tents by next year. The proper Maß manufacturers will have to lay off workers, the plastic glass thingie manufacturers will employ recent gradutates with chemistry degrees. Some people are happy, some are sad and the world keeps on turning. The only certainties left in the world are death, taxes and nurses...and em, that world turning thing.

Incidentally if anyone is looking for an original Löwenbräu Maß glass please contact me at alwayslookingforachancetomakeaquickeuro@keydeck.com. Stocks are limited to approximately 1.8 million so don't miss your chance!

To be honest, if they do do this, I will steal one just to make sure I have one of the first of the new series...
