I know that there are more than a few parents on Toytown and Im looking for some help...(also other aupairs/nannies Id love to hear from you too)
I am a nanny, but occationally I do babysitting for other families. I havent ever been paid well for this and was wondering what people here usually pay their babysitter...
Lets say two or more kids per hour...
And another question is...why do people bring up how much I want to be paid at the end of the night...example...I just finished watching three kids for five hours, they were 6, 3, and 1 years old. granted they were all asleep for most of the time. The mum gets home and says, oh I didnt even ask how much you usually charge... I was thinking 7 euros... I dont want to underpay you... oh wait yes here you go and thank you so much. All of this within one breath and Im shoved out the door. I picked up their house and read their kids stories. Is this normal here?

We had a babysitter a couple of weeks ago and she looked after our 4 year old and 2 month old baby from 8pm - 2am - came to 55 Euro. Works out at about 9 Euro an hour. Which I thought was quite reasonable, considering one continuously crying baby.

babysitters get paid really little here. i used to babysit 3 kids for 5 euro per hour which everyone said was the going price but i couldnt live with that amount so i asked them for 7.I think thats what most nannies get. Some of the families also tip u a bit. But 7 is a reasonable price.( 8 i thought was the highest rate so far!

Well I had a friend who babysatt for an American family here who paid 10 euros and hour for two older kids. The mom of that family said that that was typical, but Im finding out its not true...

yeh "the non german" families are not aware of the rate i guess. Some of them can afford it too.Not many can.

My friend who is a nanny for two horrible devils only gets paid 6 euro an hour. I guess one positive side to this is that you are not paying taxes so in essence you are really being paid "gross" of about double that when you really think about it. I think this is horribly low pay (especially when you are suppose to be looking after the parents most precious thing in life)
The think I find most disturbing about this situation though, is that they pay their housekeeper 10 euro an hour - granted she comes only once a week, but - guess they care more about the appearance of their house than they do their kids!

I wasnt babysitting for the family I nanny for though...this was straight babysitting. Watch the kids for a bit, play a few games, send them to bed, wait until their parents get home.
if you are a nanny (they usually live with the family) you get paid less because you live with them. I was just saying that I was babysitting for a different family...meaning I dont live with them...meaning I would expect to be paid a bit more. confusing I know...

I would say that only a small percentage of nanny's "live in" The example I gave was a live out nanny - I have found (my experience and many friends) that the pay is the same for live out nanny and for the babysitter. You really wont find many nannies (private, not via agencies) that get paid more than 5-8 an hour for live out child minders. If you are making this as a live in nanny - then you are doing pretty good.

We pay €8,- per hour, but the babysitter does the ironing at the same time.

Babysitters charge between 8 and 10 Euros an hour - thanks goodness we don't need them though. By the time I would pay someone to watch the kids, I wouldn't be able to afford a beer for myself.
When I used to babysit it was about $1 per hour. Apparently now it's up to about 5 bucks an hour in the states - pocket money for teenagers. But try to get a teenager here to work, much less for pocket money like that ;-)
Anyone know one ??
However, for regular child care - and nannies and au pairs are not just tending the kids for a night and usually can have a major influence on a child's development - I think much better rates are in order. Heck - I know for a fact I wouldn't have had the patience or skills to do that like of work and I admire those who do.
For what it's worth...

I've been babysitting for almost 3 years now. I get paid 7,50€ an hour - in some families this goes down to 6,50€ when the kids are in bed...
I know, it's not much, but pretty standard I'm afraid. It's much the same as in the UK though... I used to get 5 pounds an hour there...

HollyGolightly, I hope you don't babysit for her again, at least not without setting her straight. If she calls again you could try the "I didn't want to embarass you but the proper rate is XX per hour for the first child and additional XX for the each child thereafter...(whatever you decide)...If you'd like me to take care of the children again, it will be XX rate per hour." You could be really ballsy and ask for proper payment for the last time. Probably not a good idea, water under the bridge and all that.
If she can't or won't afford it thats her problem. Hell, I'd pay you 7euros to come over pick up my flat and read some boring reports out loud to me. There's only one of me and I'd probably offer you some pizza and a beer.
Good luck!

As a single mum, I find it is a difficult subject - my old babysitter in NRW got 5 Euros an hour. Here I pay the babysitter 7 Euros an hour and I always add a little extra. Might not seem like a lot but it is when it is the only chance you have to get out.
I am looking for a live in nanny or aupair at the moment because my babysitters have let me down so often with not being able to pick up the kids. I would gladly pay a fix decent sum to someone, who the kids love and who is totally reliable. Even if it means I work for "nothing"
