We will be "going home again" this week

During past trips to Munich, we have stumpled upon some wonderful cozy neighborhood restaurants and would really appreciate it if you could share some of your favorites (I promise not to tell..honest). We so much enjoy the atmosphere and food at these more traditional Bavarian establishments. Just a F.Y.I., the English speaking community of Montreal has published a book "Cheap Thrills Montreal". It is a little book with details about all their favorite neighborhood restaurants. It is a treasure! Our trips to Montreal have been greatly enhanced due to their efforts. If you see Randy, tell him his cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie are on the way

On another note, how is the new
Paulaner Salvator Keller? Is it ultramodern, or still retain some of its former character? Has anyone been to Yodel Wirt? We have heard form several Germans and some Czechs that this place is great fun. Thanks everyone.

Hi again Sally,
my secret tip for cosy restaurant is Cafe Ignaz on Georgenstraße. It is however a vegetarian restaurant. For bavarian fare, my 2 faves are both on Türkenstr.: Alter Simpl and Türkenhof, but are again not your typical bavarian beer hall with food.
I've only been to the
Paulaner Salvator for the Nockerberg
Starkbierfest and it all looked pretty modern then. It was basically a biiiiig hall.
As for Yodel Wirt, I've never heard of it, and a search on the internet turned up nothing.

I can recommend you a nice little Japanese/Bavarian restaurant on Worthstrasse 7, between
Ostbahnhof and Max-Weber-Platz. It's a cozy restaurant with Japanese food, but the atmosphere is pretty Bavarian. I went there yesterday, the food was great and because it's not that big it is a nice cozy place. I don't know the name exactly, but if you want to know, you'll have to send a PM to San, he knows the details...

My favorite is Gerner, in Gern, because I live there! Owned by the same people that own Bobolovsky's. Very similar, but only a 2 minute walk from my place. And the people know me now, very friendly. That's the important thing for me. In the States, you go to a place 3 times and you're a regular. Here, it took me a year and a half! Can't really describe the place, I would say the menu is "continental".

Great little spot Beans. Best Bacon & Cheese Burger I've found so far in Munich. Plus the special of the burger & a Helles is really great value.
Good pub, good music, good atmosphere, cute n' friendly waitresses, good choice.

Anyone else ever noticed that no-matter how hard they try, whatever it is - thai, chinese, indian - whatever, all the food tastes german and the atmosphere can never be really described as anyting else other than 'german?'

Don't agree in the slightest. Take "Yum Thai" for example. Nothing remotely German about it's atmosphere. Take "Hard Rock Cafe", completely American or at least generically HRC. Ditto for dozens more places I couzld mention.
If some places which are not billed as specifically German seem to come across as having a German atmosphere then you need to remember that you are in that country. I'm a little baffled though at how you believe Thai or Indian food "tastes" German. It may not be like the cuisine of that country which you are used to at home, but that's to be expected. Can you clarify that please?
Sorry to sound confrontational (I'm still working on my anger management skills) but your comment is without basis in fact and kinda silly, and sounds like you're just trying to stir.

and in any case, I have been told, though I don't know how true it is, that most Indian and chinese food as you eat it in the UK at least, is nothing at all like the cuisine of the country it supposedly originates from. Who cares if it tastes nice, and for the record, the Mexican I've had, and the Indian I've had since being here, tasted just like they did at home - more Germans about mind you.

ok - wasn't meant to be an inflammatory joust...I spent 3 years in FFT when I was a tad younger and am now spending considerable time in M, and it still feels like they use wurze in everything. maybe I just never hit the right place. Less stirring, more stir-frying... Where is Yum Thai?

Yum Thai is on Utzschneiderstraße which is very close to the Victualienmarkt.
http://www.munichnights.com/bars/bar_yum.htmAnother great one I came across recently is "Ruen Thai" on Kazmairstr (in Westend). Great food and top quality service. It's won various awards. You've gotta book in advance if you're going at the weekend. I'll definitely be going back there.

I've heard the same. But we've sort of adopted and adapted the Indian food back in Blighty in the same way as they've done with Mexican food in the US - take a look at Baltis for example, which were invented in Birmingham.
The major difference I've noticed with the Indian food here is that it's a lot more mild than in the UK - but that changes once the restaurant owners get to know you.

I suppose the "tastes german" comment may be true for chinese food. have not had proper chinese food anywhere in deutschland (in London I used to eat in chinatown at least once a week and I really miss my weekly fix...)
I also find it unusual that most indian places here serve beef

Balkan Restaurant suggestions? We have had some amazing Balkan food in the Stuttgart area, but don't know where to go in Munich. P.S. You guys and gals are terrific, thanks so much. The weather forecast looks like more typical weather for our arrival on Friday

I agree with Wirtshaus in der Au - fantastic food, good service, ok prices, well kept beer and one of the best selection of traditional schnapps in Munich.
I also like: Gerner and Bobolovsky's (the place to go for a proper hot chili, Gerner's biergarten is excellent and Bobolosky's was the place where my bloke and I first had breakfast together aaaaaah), Sappralott (nice German pub, trad food, shame that it is a 1860 pub), Ysenegger (my local - best Käsespätzle in Munich), Big Easy (best steak - I've never had a bad steak there and I eat there a lot), Prinz Myskin (vegetarian food which makes even meat eaters happy, bit posey but the food is great), for posh Indian (for Brum readers: this is like Shimla Pinks) Maraharja, for scabby Indian (for Brum readers: like Manzil's) Bangkok-Bombay which has flock wallpaper and fairy lights, both places will cook to order.

PS as for Edison and Co's burgers, well, you either like them or you don't, I prefer Bobolovsky's burgers.

PPS The Salvator is ok, I like the wood but prefer the newish Augustiner cellar part. It is next to the Augustinergarten (not the Keller next to the brewery, it is near BR the other side of the rail tracks) and you go into the cellar down a spiral staircase, beautifully done conversion, limited menu but great beer so who cares?

I think "Dilo" in Pariserstr is either Yugoslavian or Croatian. Not been there for a while.

tijuanas next to leo's gym on leopoldstr has a great "all you can eat" fajitas deal on sunday
good value and tastes ok, caveat is you need to be willing to put up with what is probably the worst service in schwabing

My sort of 'lokal', which i really like is 'Scheidegger' on Bauerstraße in
Schwabing (just southeast of the southern exist to Hollerzollernstraße U-Bahn), its near to where i live and work; i found it accidentally and go about two or three times a week on average.
It's an Augustiner place so the beer is fine esp. the dunkles on draft. and the food is pretty good too, given that its a pub / kneiper:
they have a daily lunch menu which costs €5.50 for a main course and an extra 1€ for a small starter or dessert and theres a sunday special of roast pork with potato dumplings and cabbage salad for €8.50 which is up there with the best i've had in munich. The food is more expensive outside of lunch or off the normal menu (about €10) but also more substantial.
Also its got a nice atmosphere, candles on the tables etc, good music playing and friendly staff. so hey, i like it, but not sure if i want it full of TT people next time i go! (you're okay as long as you buy me a beer.)
found a website with some pictures here:

My favourite little lokal is "Wirtshaus Ligsalz". I went there first back in '98 when I moved in around the corner. Started out just sitting on my own reading a book at the end of the counter. I've been going there regularly since and it's still a great spot. Don't do much reading there anymore though.
The owner is from Berlin and is completely barking mad (in a good way).
They do a regular Ossi day which is great fun. The next one is on Saturday, December 13th and it's getting more and more popular with people as they go on.
Incidentally their Thanksgiving Special appears to be an all-you-can eat TexMex Buffet for ?8.49pp
I'd fully recommend the place for a fun night out.
