What is a céílí?
Literally, céílí (pronounced kay-lee) means a party with music and dancing. You dance on your own, in pairs or in groups. The steps are called out by a “caller” so even novices don’t find it difficult to follow. Irish folk dances are usually made of simple steps, so fun can be had by the whole family. A céílí is popular among all generations, particularly children. Few people can resist the lively rhythms of Irish folk music, known to many from the “Riverdance” show and the Hollywood film “Titanic”.
