Beach tennis - Munich

Introduction and tournament at the Beach Arena

Is anybody interested in giving "Beach Tennis" a try? I don't know much about the sport except it is played on a Beach Volleyball court with short racquets/paddles and low pressure tennis balls. I think it's similar to "platform tennis" they play in Spain and parts of US (but if I'm wrong blame wikipedia - as far as I know we don't have either sport in the UK).

The organiser of the Schwabinger Cup squash tournaments at Fitness Schwabing has turned his attention to Beach Tennis for the Summer and the first tournament takes place at 3pm on 6th June at beach arena. There is also a free introduction to the sport the previous evening from 7pm.

Details can be found on the following website npsports (most of it in German). A few of the regular Sunday morning squash players are thinking of giving it a try. You can register you interest via the website or send the organiser an email (info@npsports.de).

I forgot to mention there is of course a bar for those that don't like to take sport too seriously.

Yesterday's introduction to the sport was great fun, shame it didn't generate more interest among the Toytown community. Unfortunately today's tournament is cancelled due to the pouring rain.

The sport is so easy to pick up that anyone who has played squash, tennis, badminton or table tennis will be able to play instantly and due to the racket being so short even those who usually lack hand eye coordination will find it easy too. It's probablty closest to badminton but anyone who has played beach volleyball will have an added advantage of knowing how to move on the court.

Not sure when the next tournament will take place (I'll have another go of raising interest when I do) but can strongly recommend people coming along. The tournament will be full of beginners as the sport is so new here only a couple of the 20 or so that turned up yesterday had tried it before.

btw the beach arena is a great venue (if it isn't raining), with very nice owners.

The rained off tournament has been re-scheduled and is now taking place (weather permitting) on 20th of June at 4pm at the Beach arena.

Despite it's rather grand title of the "MUC OPEN" it's the first recreational tournament here in Munich and most of those playing will be doing so for the first or second time.

It'd be great if a few more from Toytown could enter and have a beer afterwards (or if you're still sceptical just come for a beer).

As the site is still only in German if you want to join in perhaps you could sign up here and I could contact the organiser with a list of names (we need to play in pairs).

Weather forecast doesn't look good for tomorrow now either but unless it's bucketing down I'm still going. If anyone wants to turn up at the beach arena at around 15.45 before the introduction to the sport starts at 16.00 then I've agreed with the organiser we can give him teams(pairs) on the day.

I definitely want to give it a try. Can't promise it will be today but will follow the thread.

@ bUddy

despite the changeable weather it's going ahead today so maybe see you there. If not I'll post details of the next one once I know them.
GaryW
Only me and stnx (Stanko) in the end today and the standard was slightly higher than expected - lots of good tennis players trying their hand at beach tennis (and not all for the first time). Still it was good fun and as i've said before very easy to pick up. Next event at 22nd August I think - details to follow.

With weekend courts at the beach arena at just 10 euros per hour if you are interested in giving it a go beforehand post here, Stanko, dooblie (James) and I are all interested in giving it another try.
