Does anyone know a good/reasonably priced place in town where you can basically sit all day and surf the net? Being unemployed and not having cheap internet access is difficult.

yeah well you could try easy-surfer fromMSN, which is what i use. it seems to be the cheapest without having to 'anmelden' and pay shed loads in the process...this is a dial-up account though, so it's not fast 33000kps to 44000kps sometimes depends on the demand, so don't tell everybody about it! cost well have a look on the screen under www.msn.de then internet zugang. last time i looked it was about 1,35c per minute, but you have to pay for the whole minute (1 minute billing), or alternatively there is the other one offer at 1,45c per min based on 1second billing

hope this helps, or if anybody knows of one that is cheaper then tell me please! whilst on the subject, anybody know how we can get the cheapest dsl, without going through the wonderful Deutsche Telekom, is that possible in this competition friendly country that we live in? i haven't found one yet.

Wexford, whilst we are on the subject of unemployed , if you haven't already have a look at one of the postings about The unemployed in Munich, let us know if you interested.

Wexford, I presume from what you said, that you do not have your own PC & modem at home.

There's only a few places that I know of that you can try out. Obviously there's the easyEverything place opposite Hbf. You can get info about another place at this link http://www.icafe.spacenet.de/ . Also, there is an internet terminal downstairs in C&A which from what I can see if completely free.

Failing that maybe one of the other unemployed peeps has DSL and could invite you round for a few hours.

Good luck!

Do you want to use the internet to look for jobs or to simply surf? If it's the former, good luck. Several years ago, I used the computers and internet at the central library at the Gasteig. I do believe it was free at the time, but it may have a nominal charge now if it's still running. There was a high-level of filtering though, so some webpages were impossible to view. There was also often a waiting list, but if you have time during the day, it might not be such an issue. Anyways, check it out.

This being a "nanny-state" that we live in it wouldn't suprise me at all if the government gives free high speed access to all unemployed people thus encouraging them to remain unemployed even longer.

I say this with a slight hint of sarcasm, but actually I'm serious. Have you been down to the unemployment office? There are probably banks and banks of unused high speed, high bandwidth, high color terminals just waiting for your use. A bit like EasyEverything but for those with an EasyLife.

i speak from painful experience.

good luck.

Forgot to say: when I was first looking for a job in Munich two years ago I used the free terminals in the main university library on Leopoldstrasse. There were around 14 terminals and you could use them as long as you liked completely for free. The only problem was that they were dead slow. But if you're unemployed then you can afford the time to wait 90 seconds per page load.

I've been to the library in the past few weeks and noticed the same terminals in the same place. But I've no idea if they're still free or what the network speed is. If you now pay at the Gastieg you probably now pay here too.

If you wanna try: these terminals are in the main hall on the second level over looking the lower level. There are also a few computers with net access in the magazine readers hall downstairs. These restrict the sites you can visit, i.e. hotmail, mail.yahoo, etc. But Probably not Toytown! smile.gif

Simpson is kinda right.

In the main hall at the employment office at Kapuzinerstrasse 26 (U3/6 Goetheplatz) there are 54 computers with internet access which are available to the unemployed for free.

One major caveat: the only websites allowed are job seeker sites. Presumably the net access is filtered through some kind of whitelist of allowed sites.

I wonder whether the ToytownMunich/Employment category would count as a jobs website. No reason why it shouldn't. smile.gif
