It's a good idea to charge something like 15 euro a maß or a huge admission charge. It might cut down on the scum and allow wealthy toffs like me some more drinking space.

Make it an invitation only event, the tourism board decides how many people from which country are allowed to visit and the embassies submit name lists. Chrissake, this is a Volksfest, that includes what you may regard as plebs.
Next year will be even worse, it's the 200th anniversary of the first Fest. I bet that the price was set with that in mind - it must not reach the €9 peak so we'll be modest this year and next, ending up with €8.90 and over €9 by 2011. Then again, if €8.70 is the average, some tent may hit €9 this year.

You been here way too long Sarabyrd and are starting to think like the Hermans. Exact number of people invited by country? Christ - what an administration frigging nightmare, and also completely anti the whole Ethos of Europe, of which Germany is the #1 supporter. You'll get Italians pretending to be Portugese and christ knows what else.
It's already effectively restricted. If you can't get your bum on a seat, or can't get in a tent - you don't get a beer. It works fine. Just a bit of a scrum, but never keeps anyone away!

As Katrina says, until it goes over 10 euros, it really doesn't matter anymore. It is a joke though, those guys must make so much money, regardless of the cost of setup, security etc.

The over-crowding is a separate problem, however the solution is easy - add another 10 tents. There is plenty of room in the space taken up by the agricultural fare (once every 4 years), which is otherwise a bus parking space. No one cares about the argricultural fest, and the buses can park somewhere else.
The problem is that the ones that have the tents now want to keep it just they way it is (huge cash making machine, 100% of the time) and the ones in power are the tent owners family.

i don't think € 8.70 is expensive. If i'd project the average beer price here in D-dorf in a pub/club/bar it would be around €10/Maß
In the nineties, a 0,5 Weissbier was 4 then 5 DM here, so a litre 8-10DM. 3.90??? When? In the sixties?

Either make it a true fest for tourists and charge what the traffic bears or give it back to the locals by having a speech test before you enter. Problem solved. Those who pronounce shibleth or oachkatzlschwoaf the right way get a pass to the beer heaven.

The official
Oktoberfest site is still calling the price of €8.70 inofficial as it hasn't yet been confirmed by the Tourist Board.
However, in the subscription e-mail I received they are speaking of "up to €8.70", meaning some tents will charge less. We'll see what the official word is soon.

assuming half the foam is beer it's still well under the litre mark.

and I'll be having a few sneaky swigs en route to make up for lost beer over the years.
And they'll see clearly from the glass that you took a swig and refuse to top it up. You generally have to wait 10 minutes for the foam to settle and if you take a sip or even use grease on your fingers to kill the head quickly, the foam won't coat the side of the glass clearly and evenly and you're screwed.
I don't know why everyone's bitching so much about the price (except for the fact they don't fill the fucking glasses). It's only gone up 47% in the past 9 years whereas most things double in price every 10 years. It's a hell of a jump this year over last but look at the massive increase in costs of transport, grain and energy. Bread, eggs and milk have more than doubled over the past 10 years, as have tinned goods and fresh meat. Cucumbers and lettuce are five times the price they were in 2000. The beer hasn't increased nearly a much in price; It's not much more than double the price of
twenty years ago, so quitcher moanin'.
woof.

Considering gas.electric etc have all gone up in price then I am not surprised the beer has gone up too..

I have friends that drink wineschörles at the Paulaner Armbrustschützenzelt, but watch out for the costs! a Mass cost them 2 beer tickets. And that took alot of begging to get the waitress to bring them anything other than beer.

And they'll see clearly from the glass that you took a swig and refuse to top it up.
Perhaps it depends on who is doing the asking, but I've never had a problem with this. They are too busy filling glasses to argue about a couple of sips. If you went with your glass nearly empty that would be another story. I figure that's the price they pay for making me go and get my own beer. A nice quick swirl of the beer and foam can also solve this problem if you are really worried.

I spoke to Ochsenbraterei today, they are calculating €8.50 but are waiting for the final decision from the Tourist Office.
