Oktoberfest horse meat ban ends

Neigh-sayers up in arms

The way has been cleared for horsemeat to be sold at the Oktoberfest, and at least one butcher has already submitted a request to run a stand selling pony grub.

Previously, because of the perceived poor quality of the meat - sourced mostly from sick, old nags - it was forbidden to sell horsemeat at the Oktoberfest. Now, horsemeat is considered of the same quality as other meat. It was also considered irreverent to sell horsemeat while at the same time staging horse-races in the vicinity (Horse races ended in 1960)*.

Whether horsemeat indeed reaches the Oktoberfest this year is another matter - there is a strict points system which determines who gets a stand.

I think this is offal and will stirrup loads of trouble, but I guess we're saddled with it now.

Half a chicken was expensive enough at the Ofest last year. Half a spit roast horse....that will be giving these vendors the licence to print money!
Katrina
Never mind the neigh-sayers, I'm sure that pony produce will trot off the shelves.

After bird flu and swine flu outbreaks then donkey meat might be a healthy option....as long as it doesn't give you the runs.
crusoe
As long as it's well bray-sed it should be OK.

I'm equinanimous about this, you can lead an Oktoberfest visitor to horse meat but you can't make him eat it.
SpiderPig
I certainly wont be hoofing down there for a donkey buttie..

Moonboot
every time I go past the Wörle horse butchers in Viktualienmarkt it's jammers.
wonder how it'll take off at the Fest though, are general fest-goers and tourists into eating horsemeat I wonder.
will they sell foal meat too (the butchers do) cuz I think that is rather sad

NicciJae17 - get off your high horse.
mikem409
i hope that they do sell horse meat at the fest have always wanted to try it but it is hard to get in the u.s.a
Niccijae17
high horse? actually my horse is pretty tall... sorry i just dont like to see people eat something i actualy interact with... plus im partial cause i dont eat red meat;)

I wonder if tourists will eat it "just to try it." I did that with reindeer meat, but couldn't make myself try horsemeat. I've also yet to eat a rabbit. I had a carcass in my freezer, but couldn't eat it, even though it had already given its life. Yes, I can eat fowl and pig, so yes, it's hypocritical, but...

And yes, foal is going too far. Young horses are visibly enjoying life. It seems wrong to kill an animal that appears to be enjoying life. Older horses also seem to enjoy things, too, so yes, no to horsemeat. Personally, speaking. I know that the practice won't disappear.

Well, the original Italian salami is made out of horse meat and nobody rises an eyelid.
At least the azzurris will be happy at the O'fest when they see some proper weiners made of horsey meat.

It'd be OK for the mane course or a foal English breakfast. Which has a kick to it!
A Frutti di Mare or the Filly steak might go well with it as part of your stable diet.
Mac Donald's will be doing a Mac Trigger for a limited period.
And don't ask what meat they are serving at the Hippodrome!

So you think that gives you the right to be as moralistic as a vegetarian, even though you clearly lack the conviction to be one?

Yummy, lets hope it'll be dog on the menu next year!

Just because she doesn't eat red meat doesn't make her a vegetarian.

I AM a vegetarian and I have no problem with horse meat being sold at the Oktoberfest. For that matter, it wouldn't bother me if dog meat was there. I'm not going to eat it, sure, but if you eat beef or pork, why say no to horse or dog or cat?! One rule for some, another for the poor others.

I'd eat the horse, the dog, and the cat. I figure I can't knock it til I've tried it. I'm pretty certain I've eaten a fair amount of horse in Spain, though, cause it's nearly impossible not to down there, I had my host family going crazy trying to find 100% beef til they eventually said fuck it...since it was never 100% horse though, I'm not sure on the taste.

Met a girl from Vietnam a while back that insisted dog was great...I'll try about anything once.

...and yeah, I love dogs and I'm quite fond of a few cats...but well...if they taste good too...umm...

Horse and pork meat are the best ....only savage people eat sheep
