The way has been cleared for horsemeat to be sold at the Oktoberfest, and at least one butcher has already submitted a request to run a stand selling pony grub.
Previously, because of the perceived poor quality of the meat - sourced mostly from sick, old nags - it was forbidden to sell horsemeat at the Oktoberfest. Now, horsemeat is considered of the same quality as other meat. It was also considered irreverent to sell horsemeat while at the same time staging horse-races in the vicinity (Horse races ended in 1960)*.
Whether horsemeat indeed reaches the Oktoberfest this year is another matter - there is a strict points system which determines who gets a stand.
I think this is offal and will stirrup loads of trouble, but I guess we're saddled with it now.
