Renting a bike to cycle from Konstanz to Mainz

My brother and I are planning to bike down the Rhine for 8-10 days beginning June 5. We would like to rent bikes in or near Stein am Rhein or Konstanz or Basil and be able to drop them off in Mannheim or Mainz. We will stay in Bett und Bike places, so we do not need fully loaded touring bikes. Sturdy bikes with room for a couple of small rear panniers should suffice. The less attractive alternative would be to rent bikes in Mainz or Frankfurt and take them on the train to our start. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice for such a trip? Thank you.

As far as I know, there is one cycle hire shop in Konstanz - Kulter-Radle (www.kultur-raedle.de). Not sure if there are others, and not sure if they are ok with returning bikes in Mannheim. Send them an e-mail (kultur-raedle <at> t-online.de) - they should be able to give you more information than I.
