HI y'all,

well let's face it there are only so many hours in the day that one can look for a job and still keep some sanity... huh.gif

Just wondering if there are others out there that would like to get to know some other dossers, i mean job seekers, every so often so that we can eat some food, bitch about not having a job and complain about the terrible life here in Munich. cool.gif Whilst everybody else is working hard and paying their taxes (ok i'll expect some backlash from this, it's fair game) biggrin.gif

Maybe we can help each other, by means of knowing other people where jobs might be available, i don't think everybody in munich works in the IT sector. or do they?

That's if i'm not boarding during the week!

let me know who is interested and we can get something up and running.

D
Elfenstar
you've been unemployed for 11 months. sounds to me like you're lazy or feeding from daddy or mommy's wallet if you can afford lunches and snowboarding whilst being unemployed or maybe there is a reason you ain't gettin' hired? ever thought about that? just trying to pour some salt into your wound. tongue.gif

and too i am curious. how does one go about being unemployed for so long? i can understand construction workers who have nothing to build and don't want to move away from home cause they have a house, but high-skilled workers? it experts? aerspace engineers. thar gotta' be sunthin out thar.
Keydeck
Just to throw in my tuppence worth. It's easy to be unemployed for a long long period of time. Specifically if you are in the high end of the IT industry where many skills tend to be quite specific and job openings are few and far between. If you are willing to travel then it's less of an issue, but if you want to stay in a particular city or even country, then it's quite conceivable that you could be out for many months. As for the financing issue, many IT people here work as freelance contractors and have been doing so for quite a few years. The downside is that you have to look after your own affairs completely in terms of healthcare, pensions etc, and there's the relative insecurity of such a position. The upside is that you are damn well paid for it and this will often facilitate being unemployed for long periods of time. I don't know Davek's personal situation, but I know many people out there in similar positions.
michnic
I'm in for the Outings of the Unemployed. The Hausfrau thing is getting on my damned nerves. Might as well be one of those Ladies Who Lunch. tongue.gif
jordigo
I am in... out in the cold as per 1 jan and not eligible for dole money. yippee. might as well lunch now since in just over a month's time eating out for me will mean rummaging through the bins outside mcdonalds on Leopoldstrasse.
Elfenstar
i don't get it! i know of no germans who are almost out of a job or are unemployed. i know college grads who are still looking, but this is normal. is this unemployment trend special to ex-pats? maybe freelancers are more prone to this. i'm sorry, this is really worrying.
koala
Elf,
I imagine that in a lot of places it works on the last in first out principle. Locals tend to have been in their jobs longer than expats. I also suspect that companies kid themselves that an expat is more likely to find a job than a local because the expat is more likely to up sticks and go where the job is. Also there is a 'social code' when it comes to making people redundant ... 'young, single people' are generally fired before 'the older, married with kids people'. But this applies more often when a company is forced to chuck out hundreds of people.
jordigo
elf, I know plenty of germans out of a job or about to lose their jobs. all of my german colleagues, for a start... the thing may be that for germans there is still a lot more social stigma to being made redundant, so they may go into hiding until they are "respectable" members of society again (i.e. have found a new job)
Elfenstar
i think that is it. being without a job as a german is shameful 'cause that is basically who you are. we americans are no different, but unemployment benefits are so meager that no one can afford to be unemployed. american's are willing to do just about anything to stay employed, even do something "beneath" them.
i hope you find work jordi.
jordigo
well the unemployment benefit can't get more meagre than here... I would get € 0.00 (zero euros, nil cents - that is £ 0.00 in old money or $ 0.00 for our transatlantic and antipodean friends) in spite of the fact that by the time I will be officially out of work here I will have contributed the maximum monthly amount for about a year

anyway today's news is that I have found a job in London so will be moving back for a 2 january start. all's well that ends well. auf wiedersehen und servus munich. will be back for wiesn tho!
AquaticMeringue
There are obvious advantages for Germans looking for work here though. Only last week I was turned down for interview for a software development job (it was even in my field of speciality) because I'm not a native German speaker - which was, according to the company, the most important criteria (for software development???). I know other people who have been turned down (despite speaking relatively fluent German) on the same grounds.
davek
OK then, those of you who are generally interested in 'doing lunch' send me a PM or something..michnic, jordigo, or anybody else that's employmentally challenged! the rest of you...hmmmmph...i expected a jibe or two, but really! biggrin.gif

I am fortunate in as much as the lovely german state pays for me...but it won't last for long though...but i ain't a freelancer, and never have been, i paid my taxes, and lots of them for the passed several years!!

elfenstar, i you can find me a job in the aero sector, i will be eternally grateful and buy you lots of beers/food whatever is your prefered choice
MysteryMan
Aero sector is a bit vague, what are your qualifications?
davek
I have an English Masters' Degree in Aerospace Engineering, (Aeronautical Engineering for those of you that get confused as to what it is, and Luft- und Raumfahrt for the rest) cool.gif
Hazza
So you're not exactly a rocket scientist then!!

sorry - I'll get my coat
MysteryMan
I'm presuming you've tried all the obvious (like EADS)??
Keydeck
Yeah I thought they were bringing in loads of people to Munich for that new Galilleo multi-billion euro project thingimajiggy.
jordigo
about 6 months ago the galileo project was not fully financed, they were short about € 3 billion that they were attempting to raise from the private sector. so not sure if and to what extent that has moved on in the mean time. point being: it will probably happen, but the question is when and the answer to that may be "not yet".
davek
Mysteryman, err yeah once or twice..

As for the galilleo thingymajiggy..as jordigo says, it wil happen but not just yet, due to german beaurocracy and the unwillingness of anybody to make decisions!

Hazza, i could do rocket science stuff if required!! it's only a reactionary thrust vehicle, with a bit of electronics in it for guidance...not hard! laugh.gif

anyway lets back to the topic point, who's up for 'doing lunch' in munich as somebody as altered my original title. (of course if you know of anybodythat wants a talented Aero engineer, then please let me know! tongue.gif
davek
Ok guys and girls,

we've had some up take on the 'doing lunch' thing. so can i propose that we meet up for lunch next week, say Wednesday at 13.00 (nothing too early, don't like the German idea of having lunch at 11.15) underneath or as close to underneath the new christmas tree that is in Marienplatz? I understand that some would prefer other locations, but as it's central, everybody has the same trouble getting there, practically. But just think of trying to do this in the UK those of you that know the uk transport system!!!

i think it is a good as place as any to meet, then in the next few days we can perhaps decide on a venue 'to lunch' and of course realising how we will all recognise each other! open to ideas of luncheon places, i would recommend somewhere that's not too noisy of course, and good food.

If you are definitely interested in 'doing lunch' then let me (or post it here) know so that we have an idea of numbers, and that somebody isn't left standing in the cold amidst the tourists as we've all buggered off. Of course the venue might change in between time so watch this space.
davek
Just wondered if we have any more takers for the unemployed 'let's do lunch' on Wednesday at 13.00 under the tree at Marien platz.
davek
Hi y'all

Just like to say thanks to those who came today...the world is now put to rights, and is better place for it! Perhaps i should have reminded everybody about it yesterday and we would have had more upatke on it, oh well. Better luck next time then.

Who would be interested in the same thing next week?

let me know, and this time i will post a reminder too!!
beans
Me...

I am rushing downstairs every 10 minutes to check on my chicken dish and setting the table.

It's nicer to do that stuff with Toytown online, by the way. Normally, I would be cooking, cleaning, no company.

It is more fun. Thanks Tt'ers!

@Davek

Have you tried airbus in Hamburg or is relocation a problem? I have a client in Hamburg that is a contractor for airbus - if you are interested let me know and I can ask if they have openings.
beans
Sorry I missed out on today. I will be there next week.

Beans.

I'd just like to say that there's nothing wrong with being unemployed! Seems that lots of people here think it's something to be ashamed of. Personally if I can avoid getting up in the morning and spend the day 'Doing Lunch', going to the gym or the pub etc then I will and I think you'd be crazy to think otherwise!
sparty
If you can afford being unemployed here, I would have a good time as well. biggrin.gif
davek
Hi TT'ers,

Just a reminder about the 'let's do an unemployed Lunch thang' on wednesdays, meeting at 13.00 (1pm) under the chrimbo tree in Marienplatz.

Anybody is welcome, not necessarily the unemployed, if you have a lunch break too...but don't be too upset when you have to leave to go back to work and we can still sit around and drink coffee and chat biggrin.gif
davek
The Unemployed reminder!
13.00 under the tree Marienplatz, Wednesday
davek
Hi guys...would you belive it...i can't make it tomorrow for lunch!! sad.gif

Ahhh i hear you cry...not all at once...yeah right as if! laugh.gif

All due to the fact that about 20 mins ago, i got a job interview... smile.gif

yeah i hear you cry...

So if you guys wanna meet up as usual, then feel free, but if you like can we postpone it until Thursday this week? It's better with a group than alone, so whatever you decide then let me know.

I'll see some of you tonight anyway as i'll pop along to the Gunters thang...
davek
Anybody interested in doing lunch today? Say 14.00 as 1 is a bit too close? Usual place?
marka
How did the job interview go ?!?
davek
not bad actually, it's in Munich which is a good thing...typically gernman style, though ok we have to let the customer know (it was a consultancy) tell them about you blah blah...get some response in mid dec...let's see. job seems reasonable...
davek
Hi y'all

As i have another interview next week on Wednesday biggrin.gif , shall we meet up on Tuesday under the Christmas tree in Marienplatz at 13.00 like the last time?

some feedback as to who is coming would be appreciated, i don't want to stand there like a prized chrimbo turkey!! laugh.gif
michnic
I did get a gig in the time since you first posted your idea, but on most days I'm only working mornings so I should be able to make it this time around. Will let you know for sure by Monday afternoon.
davek
Just a reminder about meeting on Tuesday (tomorrow)at 13.00 under the tree!!
michnic
I'll be there.

Anyone else?
AquaticMeringue
I will come along if I can get up in time. I've set my alarm clock for 12pm, but sometimes I sleep through it.
michnic
I can't make it! I got some work hours this afternoon.
jordigo
oops. only just got up. too late for lunch I suppose. enjoy
davek
Hi anybody interested in lunch this wednesday 17th at 13.00 under the tree?
davek
Hi everybody, looks like we got promoted to regular events, you have no excuses now of not remembering to turn up! Is this because we have over a 1000 visits logged? Took me ages to build that up...finally laugh.gif
davek
Don't forget this wednesday at 13.00 under the tree!!
sparty
not that I am unemployed, but there are a lot of trees here in Munich...
Showem
The big one with lights on it in Marienplatz Sparty.
alice
Hey guys (& gals of course),

this unemployment lunch thingy is really cool. I really feel that maybe I can live in Munich afterall, with this Toytown connections. Unfortunately I have my German class (ja, have to survive here somehow) on Wed but next week onwards I will be free. Hopefully there are still some people here in Munich by then...
sparty
alice, if you want to make sure that there are still people at a Toytown event, join the after work beer at Gunther Murphy's tonight (which is also for people who don't work of course...).
Rico
cool.gif Hi All,

See you under the tree for some lunch and a chat!
davek
