This flu virus was deemed to be milder than the "normal" flu (whatever that is) so I would say that the reaction was a touch extreme
Got a link for that out of your ass statement?
Genetic analysis not even complete.
Grassly also cautions that the estimate is very preliminary. But with the data available now, he gets an R0 of 1.16 – enough for the virus to keep going, but only just.
This could be good news. In epidemiological theory, at least, the lower the R0, the easier it may be to snuff the virus out by further hindering its spread.
But it may be too early for celebrations. The 1918 flu pandemic, caused by another H1N1 virus, started with a mild, early wave in spring and early summer. The flu lab at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in the US estimates that the R0 of the 1918 virus in spring was only 1.45. That shot up, they estimate, to 3.75 when the virus began its lethal second wave the following autumn.
I can safely bet that Crawlie and several others posting on here about the hype have never had the real flu. I have been lucky enough to have had it four times now. The first time was the summer of '72 and I was too fucking sick to even pay attention to what was happening in Munich at that time. The second time, I was in High School and it fucked up my birthday. My parents went out that night and I was to call them if my fever went over 104°. The third time was in 1992 just after I returned from New Year's in Florida. During that horrible week, I think I watched Roots from start to finish three times. The last time I had it was here in Germany 11 years ago. The wife and I both had it and so taking the dog out for a walk was torture pure that we alternated between who was able to move and who not! We did the "Roots cure" one day as well.
Moral of the story: If you get the flu, watch Roots.
