This is the hellish hangover without benefit of alcohol. I've become a ceaseless snot machine. Everything hurts. The next sneeze could make my head fall off. Help! What're the best drugs for this? The aspirins I have aren't cutting it.

Buy a Vicks vapor inhaler, open it up and eat the contents. You won't feel a thing for about two days.

Nurofen cold and flu - although you cant get it over here.
P
Snots ok, its just the bodies natural response.
So is pain.
So is sneezing.
The best drugs are probably just your favorite ones, just so you can keep yourself from dwelling on the symptoms while your body heals itself. Yeah I would stay off the asprin though. Other than that I can only recommend vitamin juice and the sauna.

Vick DayMed... can get it in the chemists. And certainly Vick Medinait - you'll sleep like a baby and fell not half so bad when you wake up (but drink lots - it dehydrates you!)
A sauna would be great. Too bad I don't have one. I probably shouldn't have come to work. I'm gonna need something industrial to get all this snot off my monitor.
Isn't there anything recommendable from the neighborhood Apotheke?
Katrina
Feb 14 2005, 2:01 pm
Not the sauna please unless you have your own sauna.
I'm sure that you love your germs enough to share them around, but
really.Steam inhalations at home will help to clear your sinuses, sticking something like menthol, Vicks/Wicks, an open Gelomyrtol capsule etc. in the water will help.
10 mins over a bowl of boiling water with a towel over your head and you'll feel a lot clearer.
But please stay out of public saunas - it ain't fair on everyone else! And go home.
I have one colleague who thinks she is so important that she can't stay off - thanks to her we lose half a department for a week as she coughs and splutters over everything while infecting everyone else. Fantastic team spirit that.
If you are ill, stay home, you're worth more well than with bogies for brains.
Hmphf! My lovely collegues GAVE me this, they can have it back. We're a close team and like to share our experiences with one another.
But I will stay home tomorrow if things don't improve.

Wicks/Vicks Medinight is so strong that's what the bloke who had his knob chopped off and flambéed by the

Yeah. Dat's what I want. Something to knock me flat while making me smile. Yo. For tomorrow though, preferably something that will just ease the aches and halt snot production.

It is indeed powerful stuff which is why you should only take it when you're literally going to bed, It will knock you out and you'll get a fantastic nights sleep... one of the worst things for me about having a cold is the fact that you can't sleep properly...
For druing the day, they do daymed, which is good but doesn't make you drowsy

If you get a sore throat, these are the best lozenges. Made by Boots, they taste nice, are antiAmerican and really numb the throat (contains Benzocaine).

Do the following at least every 2 hours. Effective and without drugs
1) Inhale medicated(vicks will do) steam
2) Nasendusch with salt water, if u can manage that
3) Gargle with hot salt water. Make it as hot as u can manage.
4) Ginger tea!
Schotte
Feb 14 2005, 3:46 pm
what does a Nasendusch entail, more to the point how does one do this?
Nasendusch: Know what a douchebag is? Similar application with nose.

Nose is still draining though. At the moment the main problem is the fantastic rate at which it is draining. Still, less uncomfortable than stoppage, I suppose. One must count one's blessings.

That works though, just wash out your nose with warm water once or twice a day.

I used one of those Nasedusches, and it really helped me, but use it in the shower, as its can get messy, but it really cleanes out the sinus and all that slime.
Gelmetoryol (check spelling) is also great. For the throat try NeoAngina- red losenges, that really clear up a sore throat.
All available at the Apoteke.

Medi night is alcohol, a pain killer and an over-the-counter decongestant. Won't do a thing to stop the drip drip drip.
What you need you can only get by prescription, although a weaker form of it is being sold OTC now in the states and I forget the name of it. It is a decongestant with a drying agent. It will clear you up, but damn will it dry your sinuses out. You use it in conjunction with a saline spray just to moisten them again.
For a good home remedy, gargle warm salt water as deep back as you can and then blow it out your nose. Works best in the shower.

Now I have a really sore throat, time to reach for the lemsips !
Okay, first I got myself some Wick (engl. Vicks) MediNait and Olynth nose spray and slept like the dead until 5AM this morning, when the drip drip woke me. I took Katrina's advice and stayed home today. All my collegues think I'm a whimp now.
I've got that Grippostad C stuff now for daytime relief, and that's working a bit. I see it's got 200mg Paracetamol, 25mg of Caffein, and 2,5 mg Chlorphenamin-hydrogenmaleat, which I assume is the decongestant? I still feel like shit though. It's worse today than yesterday.
And I'm bored out of my skull. No new books or movies. I'll have to go see if I can find anything old who's plot I've forgotten.
Moan, bitch, etc.

You know, if you have the day off sick, there's no need to take the daytime formula of anything. Take the nighttime stuff and go take a nap. Probably does more good than all the meds.
Katrina
Feb 15 2005, 9:44 am
Grippostad C ingredients, yes Chlophenaminhydrogenmaleat = decongestant
You done the steam inhalation yet?
Remember not to take Grippostad C at the same time of day as Medinait - both contain paracetamol and a paracetamol OD is not a nice way to die.
Staying off is the right thing to do - sod your colleagues!

Yeah why must you be awake and suffer? Sleep sleep and more sleep...let your cells do all the work. If I am that sick that I don't go to work then I usually take the nighttime stuff and say sayonara.
Hope you feel better *hugs*

Got a sore throat yesterday afternoon just before my evening class. Then it got progressively worse as the class (evening) wore on. Came home with a full blown sore throat - I really hate sore throats - the worst part of the cold/flu symptoms IMO.
So, I crunched down two fresh cloves of garlic and washed them down with vitamin juice. I also made fresh ginger root tea. I managed to get through my class this morning (box of Ricolas at my side). Today, bedrest, more ginger root tea, fresh veggie soup my boyfriend made (yum!), and many cups of plain old tap water. No dairy or heavy foods in general.
If you have the stomach lining for it, try popping a few cayaenne pepper pills. Don't know where to get them here though. The pharmacies may carry them.

O.K, so the dreaded cold has now hit me. I am currently attempting the steam inhalation thing, but seriously cannot remain under the towel for more than about 30 seconds without feeling like I might be about to die. Am I doing it wrong? (Hot water, vicks vaborub, towel over head and bowl, and breathe)

for a sore throat, get some lakritze things from the apotheke- sort of like ricolla(sp?) but they really coat your throat and reduce the need to cough. Also, at the apotheke you can get these pills called Akkut that you dissolve into water- they are a great expectorant(helps to make productive coughs). Personally we always stock up on the Tylenol Cold when we're home- but these things work ok too.

If you want to stop the snot: Rhinopront. Same as (the pretty much unavailable and soon to be outlawed) Sudafed. It works, but I'd rather recommend the nose shower mentioned before. Give it a try. It works great when you use the right concentration of salt water, with the right ingredients. Scientists with access to lab chemicals can mix their own (sodium and potassium chlorides and hydrogen carbonates plus some sulfate), the rest should buy the ready made stuff:
http://www.emser.de/seiten/produkte/emser_...kte_index2.htmlThat plastic tupperware thing with the phallic appendage is the nose douche. Available in every pharmacy. Do NOT use for anything but your nose!
The brine goes into one nostril and out the other. I'm not kidding. Only do it when you're alone. It's just tooo embarassing, and likely to result in a horrible mess the first few times. But your nose will feel great afterwards.
Hot chocolate milk with lots of honey. Yum. Makes you sweat, and sweating is good. Wrap yourself in blankets and wear many layers of clothes and be a couch potato.
Avoid paracetamol/acetaminophen if possible. This shit kills more people every year than all illegal drugs combined.

Sore throats are cured by gargling with salt dissolved in warm water (also try turmeric, see
Curry to save the world from bird flu). Everything else is cured by curry or anything with a good dose of chilli, garlic, ginger and turmeric in it. Make sure it's a 'real' curry, cooked from fresh ingredients, not an open-jar-dump-in-pan type curry. Seriously, this works. I keep no other medicine in my flat, because I've never needed it.
EDIT: And eat lots of fruit as a preventative measure, and don't travel on public transport cos it's a disease transmission device, use a bicycle instead.

Be careful with such pharmaceutic products though. Use sparsely and only when you must, b/c you can get addicted quite easily, i.e. your sinuses and nasal mucosa will always remain swollen unless you continue to use that stuff.

Damn, and you just wanted to go ice-skating? Boil up about a liter of water, slit open 5 bags of camomile tea, dump it in and inhale under a towel for about 5 mins (surface a few times so you don't overheat). Gets the gunk running (and clears your skin as well).

How do they manage to do that when it contains pseudoephridine (sp?) and paracetemol? I thought it was only chemists that were allowed to sell drugs here. Of course, it could just be that supermarkets are generally naff.
