Just been watching the C5 Gadget show and they had top 5 free software. One of them was stellarium, which is an app to display the sky from any point on the planet and you can click on a star / planet / galaxy to get lots of details about it.

For those interested in this sort of thing "Cartes du Ciel", which despite its French name is also available in in English, can also be downloaded free and I find it pretty good.
Yeah, we use Stellarium every time we sky watch. It's so simple to use, love it! V cool.
