Video games similar to the 'Anno' series

My son is mad about the game Anno 1701 which he plays on PC at his dad's house. We are searching for a comparable game that he can play at home either on his Mac or on our Wii.

I searched the intarwebby quite a bit, and I see a new Anno game is coming out for Wii in the summer, but we'd like something quicker than that!

Do any of you gamers have a recommendation? Even just names of similar games would help, I can then search them myself to see if they are available for Mac or Wii.

BTW, he also has a Nintendo DS, but I have a feeling these kinds of games would be too difficult on the small screens. But if you know that a similar game that just totally rocks and works really well on DS, throw it up here too!

I thought about it, but the Mac isnt exactly a gaming machine and the Wii doesnt have that many strategy titles. I would have said "Die Siedler", but the only version available for the Mac is probably older than the Anno game you already have.

leeza: Not sure if it helps but Anno 1701 is available for the Nintendo DS and here is the link to it on Amazon UK.

It looks like the developers Ubisoft has recently announced that Anno - Create a New World game is coming out for both the Nintendo DS and Wii. You can see a video trailer for it via this link and according to Amazon UK it's due to be released around the end of June.

As for OS X equivalent games, I'm not sure but worse case he could use Boot Camp and play the Windows version on a Mac. I assume it works as this video link looks like someone got it working on a MacBook Pro

What is this category of games called anyway? Are they God Games, or RPG, or what? I can't seem to figure it out on my lonesome. If I search strategy games, I get a really really wide cross-section that is not very helpful.

I am even considering buying a cheap used PC for his gaming, so taking away the Mac/Wii restrictions, what games would you recommend that are similar to the Anno series?

In german they are often called "Aufbauspiele". Googling that term gave me a list of PC games, maybe some of them are published for Mac or wii also:
