From their website: Ryanair opens seven new routes from Memmingen (Munich West).

Ryanair, Europe’s largest low fares airline, announced today (18 March, 2009) that it will open seven new routes to/from Memmingen (approx 75kms west of Munich) starting May 2009 which will at last offer consumers and visitors of the Bavaria (South Germany) region competition, choice and very low airfares compared to the high fares and unjustified fuel surcharges of Lufthansa.

It seems to at least be nearer to Munich than Hahn is to Frankfurt, and a bit easier to get to.

More info on Allgäu Airport at Allgäu Airport opens to international flights.

Btw, it's A96 motorway all the way from Munich to the Airport - about 1h10mins drive from Munich HBF allegedly.

could they not squeeze bristol in there somewhere?

Not bad really if you have a car to drive there. Seems to be 1.5 hours on the train, so about double the time from HBF.

Nothing to the north of England either. Hi ho.

There never is.

“Passengers to/from Bavaria now have a real choice over the high fares, unjustified fuel surcharges and poor punctuality services provided by Lufthansa at Munich Airport.
I don't recognise this description of Lufthansa provided by O'Leary. I rarely pay more than €99 return to London and don't recall ever being delayed.

The only time I flew into Munich Airport with Lufthansa, they were talking about diverting to Frankfurt because it was going to be after midnight (2 or 3 hours late) by the time we got in. Thankfully, we got to Munich but by the time we got there, there were no u-bahns and had to pay €50 to get into Munich. Bizarrely, I seem to be one of few people not to have had problems with Ryanair, though that could be because I avoid them like the plague.

I think Ryanair already got their knuckles rapped for comparing their flights to Hahn with LH's flights to Frankfurt. Any bets we'll see the same now with "Munich West" and Munich?
Still, there's no such thing as bad publicity in O'Leary's book.

Well Aer Lingus now have a new Munich Gatwick route, advertised at 9.99 right now.

I presume you mean S-bahns, but even then the last S-bahn goes at 1:22 am, which is well past the last landing time at Munich. I expect that the train connections from Allgau will not run through the night. Ryanair wouldn't even take off if they couldn't get to the airport on time and then you would have to wait till there was an available seat on a flight, which could take days! (This happened to my kids)

do you book reasonably well in advance though?

will be more difficult for the Munich crowd to resist now it is almost on the doorstep

Can someone tell me when to stop laughing...I love the way that Ryanair are calling Memmingen 'Munich West'. FFS I have split my sides with laughter.

Well Memmingen is west of Munich, but then so is France and America.....

fortunately ryanair are not flying anywhere useful for me so I won't be tempted to use them.

That said, on the few occasions that I have used them, I haven't had any problems, unlike easyJet

This is dead cooooool. From my house its 50 mins to Memmingen or 50 mins to Munich Airport. Obviously would rather stick pins in my eyes than fly Ryanair to Stansted, but it's another option and also great for visitors etc.

Plus with the new AerLingus flights it can only drive the proper BA/Lufthansa downwards. I don't count Easyjet as an airline anymore 'cos the only times I have ever looked in the past 5 years EVERY flight has been silly money - so I consider them as the #1 most expensive for MUC - LON route, and with comedy flight times and Stansted as a destination I would rather walk back to the UK.
