What is TT Tuesday?

Q&A for newbies

Toytown Germany > Discussion forum > South Germany > Munich > Meetups in Munich
JoolyBooly
Hey, someone just PM'd me this and as I've seen it asked sooo often before I thought I'd make a topic for newbies. I've added some other questions I've seen, feel free to add to them!

What is Toytown?
Toytown is a website where native english speakers can ask for help, arrange meet-ups and generally have some fun. Use the topics to help you search... whether buying, selling, searching, giving, lonely, bored or even desperate, there's something for everyone!

As there are so many events, a large part of Toytown happens offline, at the meet-ups. You can either turn up to any event, or post a topic if you want to meet people. It is no problem to arrange an event on the same night as something which is already arranged, there are plenty of us and people like a change. But try to respect the other organisers (2 curry nights on the same night caused a bit of a clash, for example).

Do I fit in?
As for fitting in, of the 2,400 members I estimate that about 100 actually come out on events. These split into groups which also overlap: the curry night, German practice evening, TT Tuesday, general drinking and partying, Board games, Chess, Badminton, skiing, rugby...
People are from various countries and backgrounds, you won't necessarily get on with everyone, but you're bound to meet someone with similar interests.

What is the age group?
18-45 seems to be the trend, I guess 25-35 is the majority? unsure.gif

I'm curious to know what sort of night out the TT Drinks are like.
- TT drinks is just a night at the pub, and probably the best night to meet people as we tend to stand up and mingle, and it's not (always) a heavy drinking night so people may even remember you afterwards ph34r.gif

On 2 weeks it is at The Arc and the Twisted Bavarian, as they pay to sponsor the website and we guarantee our custom in return (and thy're nice, cosy places with friendly staff!). The thrid week is used for people to make suggestions.

Is it really clicky?? I guess you'll say no as you go, im just wondering.
I won't say no outright..there are "cliques" in TT like in any club. But there are enough people that the cliques are in the minority. I for one felt welcome from my first ever meeting, people are very open and friendly.. after all, we were newbies too, we know how it feels! Also as we're ex-pats, the members and cliques change constantly, they're not set in stone.

Many newbies are nervous about walking into the bar and getting into the crowd. This is easy.. just send a PM to someone you see is going that night, and arrange to meet them on the way (or get their phone number and they can come outside to greet you when you arrive).

Do you go often??
I go most weeks, although usually later on as I go to the cinema first (it's cheap on Tuesday). I always post which film I'm seeing in case people want to join me there, too. There are regulars who go every week, but also more and more newbies seem to be coming these days.

How many people roughly??
On a quiet night.. 10 to 20
On a loud night (like when we try somewhere new) I'd say from 30 up to 60 people! But 30 is the average I guess.

Sorry for all the questions, but im a TT Virgin!!
Pleasure cool.gif

Oh.. and PS... when reading posts, don't judge by first impression! Some people know each other and tend to get personal when posting, knowing their counterpart's humour and pain barrier... for newbies it often looks like a really nasty fight! But it's not meant that way at all
Viktor
Not only a TT virgin, but also new to Munich, and to make things even worse: I'm dutch. Would like to join you guys in the pub some night however. Are Dutchmen welcome or thrown out immediately?
Jeeves
Dutchmen are and always have been very welcome. You wouldn't be the first. Normally it's impossible to tell that English isn't your mother tongue anyway wink.gif
DrivinWest
@ Viktor

There was a time when there were as many Dutchmen at Toytown events as there were native English speakers! You are definitely welcome.
Katrina
We let them in as long as they leave their cameras at home (one Dutchman sending people blind from camera flashes is bad enough). wink.gif
PS Please speak slowly as Dutch folk tend to speak better English than most native speakers. We kan't understand youz biggrin.gif
Viktor
Thanks for the replies. Although I think it's always a bit scary in the beginning, I am determined to join you sometime! Without a camera.
roots
Are you sure you wanna do this Victor? Remember, there is no exit door to Toytown. Once you are in, you are in for good. Think again. wink.gif
Alys
I'm with you, Viktor! Would love to go along but find it a bit scary, especially being a female and living outside of town. It's easy for you blokes to walk into a pub alone.

What is TT Tuesday?

It's the thing that no newbies and a dwindling number of veterans come to as they've been turned off by the colourful new characters on M&RC. Sad, but true.

M&RC?

Edit - ok just realised Misc & Random Chat
Topsy
@DW - what is it about M&RC that puts them off?
What type of colourfulness do you mean?
The politics, or the sex, or what?
Viktor
@Alys: I have been to a TT Tuesday a couple of times now, and I must say that it's easier than you think: people are nice, and always open for a conversation. So just go!

Interesting comment, coming from someone who's rarely made it to a TT Tuesday himself for the last couple of weeks wink.gif

I was at MaxE's last Tuesday w/ a considerable number of TTers and it was absolutely fab smile.gif

Could it also be due to the increased number of events in the last one year, the last thing some people want to attend is yet another specialized drinking night? Just an observation. I only go there once in a blue moon anyway and am happy to keep it that way.

I don't know about DW's response. I think he's probably busy with the monkeys again, you know his *thing* about the bananas in the ear and all that.

From me, M&RC is a grab bag. You guys ever go to a party and you're looking forward to meeting and mingling with new peeps. Then you find yourself in some corner listening to some conversation. Try as you might, you've got not a clue what the hell anyone's talking about. And your not quite sure if anyone really knows - or is listening- to what anyone else is talking about? Anyhoo, you try to make a graceful exit, not that anyone really notices you came or went anyway.

IMHO thats the M&RC on a bad day. Adventuresome peeps - or peeps with nothing better to do-will hang around or wander elsewhere but other peeps will peek in and erroneously assume the party's lame and wander off, never to be heard from again.

I'm not into the bar scene so much but I'll likely be going the TT Tuesdays in the biergarten. Very easygoing and approachable IMHO, I can actually hear people and I don't end up reeking of stale bar smoke. Also, I can drink my Fanta in a Mass glass just like the cool kids. wink.gif
DrivinWest
No time for a lengthy response but here goes a quick one:

I've been hanging out with quite a few non-TT expats (brand new and been here for years) as of late and the ones who know TT use it for the great resource that is. When I asked if they were up for a TT Tues or other event the responses ranged from, "not my thing" to "why the fuck would I want to socialize with those people?"

I heard through the grapevine that a new expat couple came to a TT event a few weeks ago and left pretty annoyed and insulted and refused to go to another event again. I have no clue what went down though (I was out of the country).

It really is a shame if this is indicative of a greater trend (which for my $0.02 it seems to be).

probably that and not having the ambition to sit in a cellar...

I dont go to the TT Tuesday much, only if it's somewhere else than the usual cellar places (whereas I really had some great nights in the Arc!!!). But when I go I always have great fun with both newbies and old veterans. I think it is definitely the best time to meet TT and it's less a drinking night but just some chitchat and very easy going. Also very easy to apporach so I would recommend to any Newbie.

That's pretty serious but on the other hand it can happen with any group - they all have their bad days / black sheep. I'm not a Verein person myself (not implying that TT is one) but I've been to a few meets of clubs and more than once have come away thinking "never again" because of the people involved, whilst people I liked and whose judgement I would trust had told me they were great groups and what was my problem. Feeling "insulted" however is a different thing. If I feel insulted then I try to clear up the reason why. The chances are high that it's a misunderstanding and if not it's still likely that the other party is unaware of having been insulting if I don't tell them.

Cheeky edit: Just read JML's post to another thread. Alles klar now (I think)

That's actually what's putting me off TT Tuesdays nowadays. I know The Arc and Twisted Bavarian like my own living room (including their menus and the people in the place), and I'm not excited about spending a TT Tuesday there. Both these places are sufficiently covered w/ other TT events (Pub Quiz, 80s night etc).

Last year we had them at all sorts of different places (the Gerner, Park Cafe, Leo's Lounge, Cafe am Nordbad, Mango's etc, not to mention the numerous beer gardens. All good places, but of course it takes a bit of organizing. Mostly Keydeck used to do that, but now he's in Stockholm...

Tis not rocket surgery. I've always been an advocate of holding it in different places and I've never minded doing a bit of organising...and it really is only a bit. Choose a place you fancy, set a time and then invite people. Bish bash bosh (favourite expression currently) and you're done.

A lot of people are currently complaining about the sameness of things. Christ, many new TTers only appear to know The Arc, Twisted Bavarian and Gunther Murphy's. That's just sad. Nothing against any of those fine establishments but branch out a little bit. Toytown provides an excellent resourse for finding nightspots to try and there's always Munich Nights website as well (which I am no longer involved with, so this doesn't make me a self-publicist wink.gif )

It wasn't too long ago that TT Tues was in Guenther Murphy's every single Tuesday and it was packed (20-30 people) every time, even on nice days. Something has changed, and it isn't the venue.

I'm not trying to be cute as I don't know any the intricacies of TT social life, however the general feeling of dejection isn't new is it?

Also true. As I mentioned, I preferred to have it moving around, but when it was set in GMs on a regular basis it was a great event for those who went. But, there's no reason why it can't be in Gunthers every Tuesday. Or at least no reasons why people can't go to GMs every Tuesday and anyone who fancies going along is welcome. I think people get too hung up on what is deemed to be an official TT event and are scared shitless of trying anything else. On the other hand there are people who will religiously avoid an event because it has been billed as an official TT event. Jesus, you're all adults. There shouldn't even be these discussions.

p.s. I think everyone in the world is lovely, even Belgians, and we should all get on together as friends and neighbours. Now hold hands with the person beside you and sing with me..."There are so many colours in the rainbow, so many colours in the morning sun, so many colours in the whole world, and I see every one".

From a TT dejection perspective February 2004 is to today what a splinter is to WWII.

Last night at TB was fun. It just happened to be Tuesday and I expected the place to be packed. Last night was my only night off this week so I suppose I would have gone out regardless. There were just 5 of us and we had to inquire as to getting the free first beer but it was a fun time. I think that between 7 and 10 there were about 15 people there and I heard english spoken across the room but didn't know them as TT'ers.

No biggie to me that the room wasn't packed but a beer garden last night wouldn't have been the greatest idea with the rain and all so we settled for good tex mex.

If the beer's-a-flowin'
I'll be goin'
Iff'n I have cash.

@32D - sounds simple enough, but how do you know who to choose??? As I said elsewhere on the forum tonight, I went to the footie at GMs, but I'm so glad another Newbee PMd me and offered to meet me enroute cos he didn't want to go alone either! When we got there it was so crowded we had no idea which of the crowd were TTers - maybe they all were??? So I HAVE been to a TT do but not so as you'd notice!

@Viktor - as I said before, it's easy for men. If you walk into a pub and can't identify people you're looking for, it's fine if you hang out alone and have a few beers. I DON'T want to do that. I would walk in (if I had the guts and could find the location) and promptly walk out again unless I could see a table with a sign on it or something! I am not so shy I don't want to meet people, I find something to talk about with everyone I meet, it's just not knowing who "my crowd" are!
Bert
Just ask at the bar where the TT'ers are sitting, we don't bite!
Glad you enjoyed the game last week.

Hi to all the Toytowners. Where will be the next TT Tuesday?

I am portuguese and just arrived in the city 3 weeks ago for a working assignment. I dDon't speakgerman and I don't really know anybody here (apart from the people I work with, which are actually really friendly german people). Assuming there will be a lot of brits I don't know if a portuguese bloke is welkome, but considering there will not be any footaball cups during my stay in Munich, I would like to take the chance. rolleyes.gif

Regards to all

P.S. Are there usually any portuguese people joining TT?
perdido
Beetlebum it is a free forum so just show up. As for Portuguese natives I didnt see any here.
jml
ah yeah beetlebum you can come, they even let me in. sometimes. no venue is settled yet though, so be sure to vote and check back tomorrow. smile.gif

I just arrived in Munich yesterday (from Sweden) and im looking to get to know some people, and since my german isn´t very good I guess I better try with english speakers first smile.gif

so these meet-ups are good for newcomers? and are u welcome if you´re not an english native speaker? tongue.gif

All are welcome to any TT event.

Welcome.
The Jocker
alright danke danke

uhm do I have to announce in advance that im coming or is it just to show up? smile.gif

depends on the event. Curry night you'd want to let people know so there's enough space and the correct reservation is made TT Tuesday just show up. You're more than welcome to let people know you'll be attending, but it isn't required.
The Jocker
okay thanks, what about the "Meet up for indecisive 20-somethings"?

sorry für all the newb questions
