Helau and Alaaf!
Well
slightly different procedure this year.
Due to the group getting somewhat split up on the walk through from Odeansplatz last year, this year the meeting point has changed.
1pm 8th February Faschingsdienstag/Shrove Tuesday/Pancake Day @ Reichenbachplatz (tram 17 stop - both directions are opposite each other)Costumes optional (but it will be bloody cold - dry though).
If you can organise yourself enough to bring your procecco with you, then great.
If not, you can buy it at the
Viktualienmarkt.
Come and join a little bit of the Rheinland in Munich!

Oh and if anyone wants to join us later, please SMS/text either myself or someone else on the thread (PM if necessary).

Just wondering - Why Reichenbachplatz? What's going on there? I thought all action would be at Marienplatz/Viktualienmarkt?

Feb 7 2005, 1:16 pm
I'll probably meet up too. Tram 17 stop at 1 pm right?
Blimeygirl
Feb 7 2005, 1:17 pm
It's a short walk to Viktualianmarkt without going through all the hoopla...and people don't get split up I imagine...
Never been before so considering this...

Reichenbachplatz is the easiest place to meet people and then walk through to
Viktualienmarkt. The party at
Marienplatz isnt so good, very child friendly and walking acress there last year was hell.
So we decided this year to try Reichenbachplatz as the meeting point.
klar?

ugh.
we've been given tomorrow afternoon off, so if I've sufficiently recovered from watching the superbowl this morning at
The Arc by then (I currently feel like death, thoughts of going on the wagon, etc etc), I might join you.
Wednesday AM I fly out for a week in the sun!!! woohoo!
I dunno. We've been given the afternoon off tomorrow as well, but I'm starting to feel a bit iffy. Headache, sniffles, and scratchy throat. Looks like it's getting worse. Weird. I felt fine this morning...

Alcohol is very cleansing. It will work as a disinfectant gargle for your throat. At Saturday's brewery tour we heard all good things about the vitamins in beer. And procecco is naturally modified grape juice hence *good for you*
And Italians look nice. This must be connected to the consumption of procecco.
Plus you get some fresh air and daylight. It will be positively a health spa day!
Bah, butterbean, what you trying to do girl?
*green with envy*

I'll be there too as of 1! (Well, presuming I get the p.m. off)
Wanna go together Katrina?
I won't be in costume, but since we'll be in the gay district, should be enough entertainment going on by other ppl
Katrina
Feb 7 2005, 2:18 pm
Angel, yeah, we'll go together. No problem. I might have my wig on but it might be a tad frosty for my full outfit (and those boots on cobbles? oof).

do the festivities last all day then? i'm working from 1 till 5 (boo hiss) but in Viktualienmarkt: meaning I can watch the fun with envy (or that satisfying smugness a sober person gets from watching drunkards) and then join in as soon as the bell goes!
If you lot'll still be around (ie standing) that is...
Katrina
Feb 7 2005, 2:20 pm
Around? possibly Standing? Erm...

There was talk of some people going onwards to
The Arc for their Schlägerparty but that's not decided by any means.

Yep, the brewery tour definitely made me realise it would be severely detrimental to my health to even contemplate giving up beer
Kat, butterbean, Blimeygirl - get your arses into gear and come and join in the fun!!!
Btw, I will be bringing a non TT friend. Oh, and no costume for me. Gotta wrap up warm. Horrible memories of being bitterly cold last year, though glüwein helped!
Okeydokey, see ya all tomorrow at 1pm.

Ok
See how I can easily be persuaded?!
I have to ask a question about this prosecco thing though...do we like bring a bottle and drink out of it straight or what? Shall I bring a paperbag?

The people in the pics seem to have glasses in hand...

Poots and I tend to stick to the tried and trusted British Yob On Tour* look (no paperbag, no glass, just straight from the bottle). We are soooo *classy*.

Also means that you can keep your gloves on.
If you buy it there you could get a glass (with Pfand/deposit).
Beer tends to come straight from the bottle (so perhaps an Erdinger Champ or several?

see? We did actually learn something on Saturday).
As you will see tomorrow, shame has no place at the
Viktualienmarkt. ..

Only North Americans do the paper bag trick (those cost money in Germany you know).
* I expect a slap for this comment though

Paper bag is definitely not necessary (but then I too am British so who am I to judge).
You could always bring a plastic cup if you don't want to drink bubbly out of a bottle, but then you'd have both hands full...
The paper bag is really only important if you suffer from air-sickness.
You drink a wee bit too much, then you take a deep breath of fresh air and suddenly you feel airsick.
Although certain parts of the
Viktualienmarkt will be so full you will neither see daylight nor breath fresh air for most of the time you are there.
Jeeves
Feb 7 2005, 4:21 pm
No I think the paper bag thing is just an ingrown reaction from people from strange places like Canada where you're not allowed to drink alcohol on the streets...
But yes, it'll be busy and nobody is going to be looking at you simply because there won't be room to look.
Or the States, remember getting into an argument because I didn't want any extra packaging on my beer (greenie that I am) in some town. Finally got the message and walked outside, where I noticed all the other people "not drinking" out of their paper bags.
Blimeygirl
Feb 7 2005, 4:24 pm
Being able to keep gloves on at all times is good advice

I will definitely NOT bring a paperbag and centre myself out as being North American straight away...thanks for the tips.
Jeeves
Feb 7 2005, 4:27 pm
It's the same in parts of Australia too. Not a lot of people know that. Or believe it...
I felt like a right criminal drinking out of a paper bag. Fitted right in.
Makes sense in a place where the police would be oblidged to confiscate any publically consumed alcohol. If its covered with a paper bag they would need a warrant to prove its alcohol...
Katrina
Feb 7 2005, 4:30 pm
You could build the paper bag look into your costume? Just add a dodgy beard, raincoat held shut by a cord, dog on a piece of string, that sort of thing...
Blimeygirl
Feb 7 2005, 4:33 pm
Yeah but how to work in the bench and newspaper to keep warm...tricky.
I guess it is a leftover habit from Canada...we just don't go drinking out and aboot in them there parts (unless you are from a small town...they do lots of crazy things in them places). So no bag and bottle in hand...roll on tomorrow
Ah thanks Kza, often wondered what the rationale was but was too lazy to look it up.
@Katrina
Whashyamean costume ? How did you know what I was going to wear tomorrow?

It's not illegal in all places in the US. I was in Vegas for New years one year. Everyone goes in the streets from 10-12:30 because the casinos close for expensive posh parties. The guy in front of me on the street was drinking a beer out of the bottle. The cops took it away. took out a plastic cup from a stack they were carrying. Poured the beer into the cup and gave it back to him.

You cheeky mare! xx
Right, thanks for the tip. I'm going for the suave sophisticated look this year.
One boot without a lace paired by a woolly sock with a saucy toe hole in a fetching pink birkenstock.
If I don't pull with that combo then get me to a nunnery
Winegirl
Feb 7 2005, 4:50 pm
What's this about the shoes?
Katrina
Feb 7 2005, 4:52 pm
How to work a brown paper bag into a Faschings ensemble.
Dog on string and non-matching shoes are
mucho important. You gotta work that look, dress for the gutter *before* you reach it. That's very *now*.
Not to mention a collection of rare first issue plastic bags and any number of pullovers.
John Galliano is gutted he didn't think of it first, although remembering some of his stuff maybe he did and just didn't realise it.

If you are coming on the 17 or 18 tram from Main Station South/Sendlinger Tor, your tram direction is Effnerplatz.
NOTE: due to icy conditions, *the* boots are not on, the wig will be though.
