...that's what we've renamed Murphy's to. Doesn't deserve to share a name with me after last night.

Went out to watch the Ireland V Switzerland game with a few mates. Got there early to get my spot by the well and thankfully there was no worries. My gripe is this. On their website and monthly programme they state clearly "Euro 2004 Qualifier: Ireland v Switzerland - LIVE ". This is supposed to be an Irish pub, it says so on the sign and they've a tri-colour hanging over the bar. First off, they only showed the Irish game on the smaller screen near the stag's head. 20 minutes into the game they finally got around to turning the music off and turning the commentary up a little (although the sound quality was so bad you couldn't understand a word anyway). I have the utmost respect for Bono and the boys, but there's a time and a place for everything. Then, when it was half-time in the English game (which was on the big screen), they turn the bloody music back on again. I understand that there are more English people living in Munich than there are Irish and I've no problem with that. What I have a problem with is an alleged Irish pub pandering to profits and clearly not giving a shit about those who are supposed to be their own people.

I'll be watching future Irish internationals in O'Reillys.

End of rant.

p.s. Hoddy, did I see you in George's last night?

Why Keydeck? Was there some falling down drunk fool there? Nope, wasn't me this time.
Malcolm Spudbury
Hoddy, I hope you're not going to behave like that at the O'Reilley's quiz tonight. Aquatic and I have reputations to uphold, you know.
hoddysded
Don't sweat it Spud. I reserve my drunken buffoonery to beer festivals when everybody else is too drunk to notice it.

I'll be a regular lady tonight, no brawls or beer throwing...though I do reserve the right to swear like a sailor.

Well Keydeck, a few Sundays ago I was watching the Formula 1 at Murphys with a few other guys and girls. There were just 5 of us in total. Half way through the race the English football was due to start - and this had been advertised on the Murphy's events calendar too. The pub started to fill up and eventually there were 30 to 40 English footy fans shuffling around getting impatient. But the girl in charge of the TV kept the F1 on just for us. She said we were there first. Which we appreciated.

I guess it just depends on which member of staff is in control of the TV at the time. Did you actually ask the staff to let you watch the game? They usually do their best to keep everyone happy. If not: info@gunther-murphys.com
Keydeck
I asked them why they had the Irish game on the small screen and the English one on the big screen and they said it was simply because there were more English people. I might have accepted the reasoning of that but it was the fact that we couldn't hear the game at all and that they put the music on during the English half-time.

I've sent a mail directly to the owner saying basically the same thing as I said here and a link to www.keydeck.com/georges.

Did you get a reply?

By the way, anyone who follows the link and gets a 404 error: remove the fullstop (that's a 'period', for the americans among us) from the end...
Keydeck
Thanks Spud. I noticed the problem with the '.' as soon as I posted it, but unlike the 'other' forum I can't edit my messages here. Perhaps that's a good thing.

I haven't heard anything back from the man yet and to be honest it's probably unlikely that he'd reply. If I get anything back I'll post it here. More likely there'll be a couple of big blokes with bats waiting on Nicolaistr next time I venture back that way. Like I told you once before when we were in Kilian's, I seem to be a magnetic for random violence.

And here is the response that I received this morning...

-----------------------------------
Hi & thanks for your mail,

First and foremost I'm sorry to hear that you did not enjoy yourself with
us last night, of course the football result I'm sure didn't help either!.
In fact the Ireland game was on the screen at the front of the bar and on
the two TVs on the left side of the pub, the England game was on the screen at the back of the pub and the TV in front of the bar. Considering how many customers wanted to watch each game I thought that this was the ideal solution. To be honest I would probably do it the same way again in the future if faced with the same circumstances.

As to your complaint about the sound again I apologise. I myself was
standing in front of the screen at the start of the game with the remote
control and thought everybody was happy with the sound - certainly nobody asked for the volume to be raised, which of course we would have done immediately.

We do indeed "allege" to be an Irish pub, I'm Irish so is my wife. Over 80% of our staff are also Irish, we specialise in Irish food and drinks and do our best to create a friendly relaxed atmosphere. We also treat all our
customers the same, no matter where they come from or what passport they happen to hold.

We are a business and of course driven by profit and make no apologies for that.

We make a big effort on football nights to get it right & will continue to
do our best. If you do find yourself in Günther's again for a game, and
there is something that we can do to improve your enjoyment please let a
staff member know and we'll get on to it A.S.A.P.

Sincerely,

Victor Graham

Have to say fair play to the guy for replying, he didn't have to.

So, the moral of the story is: If you're not happy with something ask someone to change it. Sounds like they would have turned the sound up if you'd asked them too. Liked the spoof webpage, although it should have the Georges cross rather than the Union Flag.
Keydeck
In fairness, the guy was very reasonable in his reply. I did ask the waitress to do something about the sound and she spoke to one of the barmen, but nothing was done. I can accept the stuff he said about showing the games the way he did. I may not like it, but it's reasonable enough. The only bit I'm still a bit hacked off about is the turning on of the music during the English half time. That wasn't necessary regardless of who was there. And we did ask them to turn it off, but that didn't happen.

Anyways, such is life.

Indeed. Last night at O'Reilley's there was a group of english guys, who weren't taking part in the quiz, standing at one of the tables making so much noise that we could hardly hear the songs in the music round. Hoddy got up and asked them to be a bit quieter, and they did. For about 3 minutes, anyway.

Aquatic and I were perfectly happy to sit there and put up with it, cursing the guys behind their backs. Probably due to the years of training we received in England, that teaches you that if you go up to a group of strangers in a pub and ask them to be quiet, you end up lying on the floor with a pint-glass embedded in your skull.

I should have gone over and told those loud mouthed American's to put a sock in it too but that old lady with the leapard skin head band looked like she'd been around the block a time or two and could probably take me down in a few blows.
Keydeck
Went to George's last night to watch the football. Well it wasn't an international so I'm not going back on my word. Anyway, there seemed to be more conversation about Seaman's fecking ponytail than anything else.

Anyways, a German lad called Heinrich had reserved two tables in the very centre. We sat down anyway. He had them reserved from 8p.m. At 9pm it was still just him and some girl sitting there. At about 9:45 a couple of other girls showed up and that was it. And it was the lads birthday and all. Oh well.
