Tip: Say No To 0870:
Tired of expensive phone calls to 0870 numbers? Living abroad so cannot phone your bank at home because the number is 0870? There is an alternative...
Website of the day:
www.saynoto0870.comBasically, it's a searchable list of organisations and their 0870 / 0800 number and alongside is the direct dial or hotline's real number. Updated by the public.
This site has got to be a favourites entry.
By the way, i am in now way affiliated with these guys, it's just an indispensible link.

This is such a great website. I used it the other day to find the number for my mortgage company, not only did it give me the number, but the number was the switchboard, so I didn't have to go thru the voice message maze.
I've just tried it again now for my car insurance, and got 2 numbers and some information about both numbers.
Thanks for posting this site.

i've never had a problem ringing 0870 numbers from Germany, I always use the cheapie telephone cards which you get from the "telephone sellers" on a normal land line to land line i get about 2-3 hours for 5 euro. 0870 numbers never checked the cost but they do work coz i've used them.

I'm trying to get intouch with the DVLA back home, but all the numbers that I am finding on there website are 0870 numbers.
I tried to call them from my home phone, but no joy. Is there certain dialing codes I should be entering or is it just not possible?
Cheers,
J

It is sometimes possible, but if it doesn't work, then it isn't.
If you check out the website they may have an international number.

I recall a few weeks back that someone posted a list of alternative numbers for UK government departments rather than the 0845 numbers that they now all use. I just spent over half an hour onto the Tax office this evening, admittedly twenty five minutes of it was waiting to actually get through to someone, just for him to tell me that he could not answer my question. At €1.60 per minute, from the time the call started, I was pretty miffed.
Perhaps the person who posted the list, or anyone who remembers where it is, can post it up here so that anyone who needs these numbers in the future has a reference to them.
I have searched for it but I am unable to locate it. Thanks if anyone can help.

I think this is what you want. Taken from an email group I belong to, not written by me.
QUOTE
The website is at
http://www.saynoto0870.com and you have the option of putting in your company or number that I are going to ring and it gives you the geographical phone number instead. I personally haven't tried it yet but I know someone who has and they have said that it works. The information from the website is:
"Many people don't realise that there are many phone providers offering cheaper calls to standard telephone numbers (those beginning with 01 or 02), which don't apply to 0844, 0845, 0870 or 0871 telephone numbers. - Please see the links page and click on Cheapest Call Provider for price details. This shows that by using multiple providers, you can reduce your call cost on standard telephone numbers to as little as 3p fixed cost (regardless of duration), whereas the cheapest provider to 0870 numbers during the day that I am aware of charges 4p/min (+ 3p connection fee) to call
