Choosing between Konstanz and Bristol

Help me decide where to relocate

Linedimi
Hi all,
I am in a huge dilemma: accepting a job in Konstanz or in Bristol? Someone have any comments to help on my decision?
Some facts: i calculated more or less 1900 euros per month in Konstanz and 1850 pound per month in Bristol (already considering taxes in both) as a salary.
I want to rent a flat with minimun of 2 bedrooms.
I like to be member in fitness center and live close to the city center.
But I have no idea about cost to maintain a car, to travel, to go out for restaurants or bars, to home extra facilities, for a dog...
Konstanz is a very cute city but with only 80.000 inhabitants and Bristol I just saw pictures but is bigger and looks quite "green" (with 500.0000 inhabitants).

Any comment is wellcome.
thanks.

My sister lives in Bristol and she said that it's the second most expensive city in England (after London, obviously). It depends what you want from the place really... I don't think that you could live near Bristol centre for a 2-bedroomed flat however what my idea of 'near' is may differ from yours. Constance is beautiful however I wouldn't really call it a 'city'! For me it has more of a town atmosphere.

Why don't you look at estate agents' websites for flat prices?

Ok, from FindAProperty.com average asking price for Bristol is 2 Bed Flats £232,150.

Well, I can't comment on Konstanz, but until late 2007 I lived in Bristol. It's a great city, with many of the good aspects of London (culture, diversity etc), but with fewer of the headaches. It's also surrounded by lots of nice countryside (great for the dog!) and is not massively far from the sea (Devon/Cornwall or South Wales). You mentioned going out: there are some great pubs (especially around Clifton), clubs and a thriving theatre scene.

However, as Urban Angel said, it is disproportionately expensive (given its size) for housing - lots of Londoners seem to relocate there. Also, the public transport is at best unreliable and expensive, at worst non-existent. As such, there were (not sure if still the case) major traffic issues getting into/out of the city centre - allegedly one of the most gridlocked cities in the UK. If you are working outside of the city centre or end up at a business park, this shouldn't be as much of an issue though.

We really enjoyed living there and were sad to leave, although we are v. happy in Munich now. Hope this helps? Sorry I can't offer a comparative with Konstanz - still on my 'places to visit' list, i'm afraid!

Bristol is in the UK. Konstanz isn't. Go to Bristol.

How lucky to have two amazing options. I have lived in Bristol and now live in Konstanz. And love both!!! I think the easiest way for you to decide would be to look at your interests. Bristol has all the advantages of a city - without being too big and claustrophobically urban. It has great clubs, bars and theatres and enough that you won´t be bored. I lived there 10 years ago, and not in a very well paid job and still had a blast. I now live in Konstanz and love it too but I am 10 years older and priorities have changed - I don´t go clubbing as often as I once did, for one thing!!! Konstanz is less dynamic and cosmopolitan but has marvellous countryside - which I adore, and the proximity to the lake is really the winner for me. Nearest large body of water near Bristol might probably Weston-super-Mud (not great!!). The River Avon is very murky and not something I would consider doing anything with!!!
It´s about what your main focus is - Nightlife = Bristol Outdoor life and sports = Konstanz.
Hope that has been some help

Oh, definitelly I am more to sport and nature than nightlife. But I like international places, especially because my German is not good, where you can meet people from everywhere, go to the cinema with original language, have some live city...
not really feel like living in a village or in some extreme not international city as the one that I live now (Leipzig).

I'd say it was two totally different types of city that have different things going for them.
If I had to move back to the UK, it would be to Bristol most likely.

Konstanz has a Universtity with some International students. It is also on the Border of 4 countries (Bavaria, Austria, Switzerland, Germany) thus by definition international^^

In my opinion the lake is fantastic. So Id go for Konstanz. But this is a clear choice really. Population center or one of the (in my opinion) most desirable places to live near to nature in Europe.

Umm.. Bavaria has never been a "Country". At most it was a Kingdom, and ceased being one in the early 1900's

The Kingdom of Bavaria (German: Königreich Bayern) was a German state that existed from 1806–1918. Elector Maximilian I Joseph of the House of Wittelsbach became the first King of Bavaria in 1806. The monarchy would remain held by the Wittelsbachs until the kingdom's dissolution in 1918 ...

Bristol is a good mix too really. It's a big city, west of London and south of Birmingham there is no bigger.
Yet at the same time it's has a very "local" feel, people tend to get on more with each other in my experience, especially within their local area or estate.
And right on your doorstep is a very rural part of England joked about for it's backwardness and slowness, with loads of alternative esoteric stuff and some great countryside.

A couple of the nicknames are the "mild mild West" and the "Village of Chillage".
