BBC News:
Famous Berlin squat faces closure.
When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, Tacheles, a ruined building in East Berlin, was taken over by artists. It became a centre of artistic subculture. It has been put up for sale and the artists served with an eviction order, so they have begun a campaign to buy it.
The building's hallways are open to the public 24 hours a day and visitors are encouraged to leave their mark with graffiti on the wall.

well they've only been paying 1 euros rent for the last few years so how the hell is the owner of the building gonna make a quid on it. turf the bums out. good artists will always be ok. they'll find somewhere else. the building stinks of urine too...

Tacheles had a huge impact on the redevelopment of the Scheunenviertel and was a major draw. It was a big reason I moved here a long, long time ago. I see that it, like most icons, is past its prime but do we really need to refer to the people who put sweat into the place as "bums"? The BBC and everyone else has written its obituary over and over and I suspect ultimately it will be taken on by Berlin's cultural funds, unles Pobereit doesn't like it. All the development ideas were too grandiose for that area and I believe the current owner is bankrupt.
I won't miss the place really, or the infighting among its residents but it's worth acknowledging its contribution to Berlin.

So, you do not understand what an squat is.

sure it has fostered some artists thru the years and thats all great. yes the owner is bankrupt, or at least claiming to be as its the only way to get the squators out. and yes i do understand the whole idea of a squat whoever it was that asked...its ok to disagree with this form of housing isn't it? i'd tell you why? but i suspect you may have some bias.

and it really gives me the willies the way folks try to justify squats by listing the 'artists' that live and work there, and how the 'art' wouldn't exist if the squat was not allowed to be. codswallop. good artists always make it to the top. mediocre ones stay in squats...

NT let's talk about Tacheles: no one has really shown an interest in the place until about now. Not really. Except, of course, the squatters, who haven't just squatted. They've also opened several bars/stores, a filmtheater and host (legal) parties. They also arranged a renovation of the place to keep it from falling apart (this is apparent if you look at it from the back).
So what exactly are the squatters doing wrong? Seriously, no one wanted to move into there until now and the owner probably doesn't actually want it now. So why can't the squatters live there? I like a city with diversity and part of that diversity involves alternate lifestyles.
And Tacheles has made a MASSIVE contribution to the area. It became the new gallery district at least in part because of the place and, as I've said, drew people like me here who pay not insignificant taxes. Don't be so myopic about it -- the owners also didn't pay much for it (if anything at all).

ok...you said
'no one has really shown an interest in the place until about now'
mate, this is a prized pieces of real estate in the city of Berlin. what exactly do you mean 'shown an interest'
and
'of course, the squatters, who haven't just squatted. They've also opened several bars/stores, a filmtheater and host (legal) parties. They also arranged a renovation of the place to keep it from falling apart (this is apparent if you look at it from the back).'
and what does this mean? that they should be allowed to stay there forever. its the land its on that the expensive bit pal. what did they do for that? nothing. the only person to do anything for it was pay for it. if he got it cheap more luck to him.
and i've seen the window they put in the back. amazing. legal parties good on them, opened bars yipee. anyone can do any of these things anywhere in berlin. means nothing.
and
So what exactly are the squatters doing wrong?
nothing, just that it might be time to move on, you know, grow up, that sort of thing.
'Seriously, no one wanted to move into there until now and the owner probably doesn't actually want it now.'
you really don't know what you're talking about here. sure there were not many that wanted to 'move-in' in the current conditions. but thats not really the point is it. i mean i don't have to own a building in order to live in it?
So why can't the squatters live there? I like a city with diversity and part of that diversity involves alternate lifestyles.
yes me too. i just think in a modern society, people should not be living in squat because they have such poor conditions. and too many people waste too many years argueing their case to exist in a squat, when they really could be doing something with that energy, well doing something more positive, unstead of trying to get something for nothing.
And Tacheles has made a MASSIVE contribution to the area. It became the new gallery district at least in part because of the place and, as I've said, drew people like me here who pay not insignificant taxes.
yes yes, i agree on this last one. great.

NT72, the "artists", as you refer to them, have pumped more than €300,000 into that place and it's a major tourist attraction too.

I tjhink they should leave it be it adds to the diversity on that street. Was never a fan of it myself when I lived in Berlin but it is out of the ordinary which in this age of globalisation is good.
