It's a day out in either case but I'd recommed the Market Hall in Metz or the Auchan in Luxembourg-Kirchberg. this part of Germany doesn't understand the term "fish", let alone "fresh".

If you know someone who has a business or is self-employed (or if you are), I have found that Metro has the best fish around in southern Germany. Granted I haven't been to all Metros but the ones I have been too have superb fish. I go there to get my sushi grade tuna and salmon. Even got Mahi-Mahi once there for the grill. They have shellfish too and I've even seen New England lobster. Having lived with a lobster fisherman, I can't stand it anymore myself and I believe it was astronomically expensive.

Biggest problem with fish in southern Germany is that they think it should be smothered in a cream sauce so you can't taste it. Sacrilege that is.

Go to Cora in Forbach, It's about a 45 minute drive from Kaiserslautern. Take the A6 towards Saarbruecken and when the road splits continue on the A6 towards Paris. Cross the French border and take the 4th exit, go down the ramp turn right and it is on your right. It's a decent sized French hypermarket with a big fresh fish counter and a huge cheese counter. If you have GPS the address and a map is here

It's the middle of the mountains hundreds of miles from the sea. The only local fish is carp and a few trout, which need the taste to be covered.

Madrid is hundreds of miles from the sea and they have the best seafood restaurants in all of Europe IMHO. PezMom3, if you ever get over there for a vacation, you will not be disappointed.
