there are tons!!! all you need to do is pop by josephsplatz. there is a church there that acts as a Polish magnet - I think Sunday lunchtime is a winner

Official statistics for 2003 put the number of Poles in Munich at only marginally over 8,000, or 0.6% of the total population. For comparison: each of Greece, Italy, and Austria have just over 20,000 of their citizens living here. The English speaking countries combined have about 12,000 (US, UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia, SA, NZ). Grand total population of Munich: 1.3 million.

Perhaps it's stating the obvious, but to locate Poles in Munich try a google search for Polski w Monachium.

This very quickly turns up the Polish Catholic Church in Schwabing which toad mentions, as well a very TT-esque forum for Polish students in Munich.

just want to confirm that the Josephplatz church is one magnet for local Poles - on Sundays at noon the mass in Polish (or so my polish girlfriend tells me) - quite a spectacle I'm told smile.gif

also, just off Turkenstraße on the block north of where Cafe Puck is (in Schwabing?) there is a "Polski Diskotek" on the weekends. only been there once - it is acutally a club rented out by a group of Poles, or so it seems - and I do not exaclty recommend it. it was way over priced and not very crowded. it was fun chatting with the old guy at the bar in my minimal and broken polish, though.

I also hear that there is a Polish meat market (with real polish sausage!!!) somewhere in Haidhausen. Can any one confirm? with an address please!?!?!

Ivo,
If you don't want your post to be deleted, translate it or at least paraphrase it, QUICKLY. I gather that it's a friendly request for info on where and how to get in touch with Poles in Munich (there, maybe that's enough for admin to leave your post in place), but TT editorial rules clearly state that any posts written entirely in a language other than English will be deleted.
Good luck and all the best smile.gif

Polish joke time!!!
I'll start:
In the days before the walls came down in Poland it usually took time to get luxury items such as cars. Early in 1993 my friend ordered the best car available, a Lada saloon; to be sure that the deal would not be delayed he said that he would accept any colour, engine size, body style etc. The order was placed and sent off to the Lada factory in Russia. A month later he recieved a telephone call confirming his order, "When will delivery be?" he asked. "23rd June 2001" came the reply. "Will that be in the morning or the afternoon?". "Why do you need to know that?" asked the factory. "Well in the morning I'm seeing my dentist" he replied.

Q: How did the Germans conquer Poland so fast?
A: They marched in backwards and the Polish thought they were leaving
HartlepoolLad
@Kat, we do not understand your jokes at all... :} Maybe you can explain...

My boyfriend is Polish and we would be interested in meeting other nice Polish people here... would also be interested in knowing about the Polish meat market if anyone knows about it...? Saves my boyfriend from having overweight luggage again from bring 5Kg of Kielbasa here... :}

I've learned Polish at the uni for like 3 semesters...but haven't been doing it for 2 semesters now...and I think my knowledge's crumbling. Would love to revive it if I could (not that I can speak that much, but would like to keep it going)...anyone interested? PM me. smile.gif
Renia
Hi

I know this is an old thread, but I am from a Polish family and along with improving my German when we move to Munich in 6 weeks, I would like to improve my poor Polish and teach my kids at some stage too. I imagine there would be a language school (Berlitz?) somewhere, however maybe someone else out there is interested in learning Polish or having a Polish- Aussie friend- language exchange even, if you are Polish and want to speak better English!!

cheers
Renia

Hi Renia,

I do not know if somebody has answered your topic, anyway if you need some help in Polish or German there are few tips. As far as German language is concerned, there is of course Berlitz School in Munich but unfortunately I do not know how good it is. Maybe this links can help you:

http://www.toytowngermany.com/munich/German_Language_Schools
or
German language courses in Munich
or
Private tutors for German language learning

there are much more topics about German language on TT:), just write in Search “ German language or something like that.

I do not suppose that practise your polish can be here difficult , there are many Poles in Munich and if you need some help in polish or simply make some polish friends in Germany or Munich you can i.e. ask at this forum:

http://www.polonia-it.org/cms/html/index.php

I hope that I helped you, anyway if you have any further question you can contact me,

Piotr
Chicago
Renia, another idea for you is to go to the church at joseph platz on sundays. there is a polish language mass every sunday at noon. and it also functions as a weekly meeting of the polish community in munich. the church also organizes some language course (for german at least), and you could post a note there for languge exchange / help with Polish.

I can also refer you to a language school in Krakow if you are interested.

good luck. polish is too difficult for me... if only my grandparents had taught me when I was a kid...
Renia
Thanks Piotr and Chicago for that info. I will look up some of the links.

Chicago, I did a summer school at Jagellonian uni in Krakow a few years back- is this the one you mean? Polish is very difficult for me too, I haven't picked up my books for years either, so I will have to start from scratch AGAIN (probably the 5th time in the last 10 years)

I would like to hire a Polish girl/ lady to babysit my kids and speak to them in Polish, maybe even like an au pair, but I'm not sure if I can provide accommodation yet. I imagine that I will be able to post a note at the church or on some forums. I would be looking for someone who spoke enough German for outside emergencies (for safety's sake) and also a little English (for my children's emergencies).

cheers

Hi Renia,

the courses I attended last summer was with a private school, Prolog - http://www.polishcourses.com/about_school.html. Good prices, nice teachers, good facilities, and they can arrange accomidations. The other students were a mix of various native english speakers and germans. think: adult education.

and I am sure you could find someone like what you describe by posting notes. still, be aware that there are many poles in germany working without full compliance to the rules, so to say. vast majority are good people, hard working, honest - but also very cautious. so it may take more than just posting notes. wish I could help more, but my contacts to that community are limited.
Renia
Don't worry Chicago, I would be very cautious when it comes to my kids and also adhering to regulations. I have been to Poland 4 times (total about 4 months) so know what life is like/ was like there, compared to "the west". I also have a good idea of the sort of person I want and wouldn't hire any old person just because they are Polish.

Thanks again for your time and advice, very much appreciated.
