I'v been trying now for three weeks to get the Konfigurationprogram to start on my "sinus 154 dsl basic se". I type in the IP Address 192.168.2.1 in my browser window and I always get the message that the page can't be found.
Can some one please, please, help !!!

Are you sure this is the correct Address to use?
Do you see a link light active on the port that your PC is connected to?
Does your Computer have a correct IP address assigned to it?
pepper
What IP address and gateway do you have ? How are you connected to the router ? if you type on your machine from a DOS windows "ping 192.168.2.1" do you get an answer ?

Do you have any proxy server settings set in your browser ?

Just a start !
Kza
Ok a few things to check. Turn proxy settings off in your browser.

Is there actually a connection running between the devices, ie right sort of cable connected, patch or crossover? Definitly try and get it working over cable before wireless.

If it still doesnt work, the address could have changed. Try 192.168.1.1
Then try 192.168.2.1 through to 192.168.2.254 and 192.168.1.1 through to .254

I would use a network scanner like nmap to automate this so I dont have to type it in each time. Port 80 will be the one to check.

What os do you have? Does the network control panel tell you you have an IP address in the range 192.168.2.something? If not, set it manually until the dhcp works.

I searched for the model, and theres a lot of people with this symptom, which unfortunatley could be caused by many things. Have a google and go through the solutions listed there.

It's no use trying to do any configuration checking using a wirelesss setup - use cable, preferably the one supplied with the device. First check proxy and cable (as per Kza), then check if the router is supplying you with a valid address by clicking on "Start", then "run...", then typing in "Command" followed by the enter key and typing "ipconfig" in the black (DOS-like) window that results. If you have a valid IP address beginning with 192 then you are connected to the router - the "Gateway" address is the address you need to use to access the router configuration.

If you still have problems re-set the router to it's factory default settings by pressing the re-set button (recessed button between power switch and power cable socket on the back of the device) for at least 10 seconds. Network address is then certainly 192.168.2.1 and password is 0000

Good luck,

Kza is correct. Your PC has been configured to operate with a fixed IP on someone elses LAN. You need to re-configure it to get it's own address each time by DHCP from your new router. Proceed as follows:

Click "Start" - "Connect to" - "Show all connections"
If you don't have these menu items you can also get to the same place by double clicking on "My Computer", then on "Network Connections" (on the left side), then "View Network Connections" (on the left side too)

RIGHT click on the "Local Area Connection" and then click on "Properties"

In the list box in the middle click on "Internet Protocal (TCP/IP)" so it is highlighted, then click on the "Properties" button below right. Make sure that the two check boxes "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS Server address automatically" ARE checked, then click on the "OK" buttons (twice) to close the windows.

Close all your Explorer windows if open and then try the IPCONFIG trick again to check you now have a new 192.168.x.x address... If all has worked well you can now log into your router...

Good luck!

Done all that and still get the same print out on the DOS screen ???
Nobby
I would also like to piont out that i have Win 89. By the options it has "Obtain an IP address Auotomatically" This is correct. By the DNS bit i have two boxes, one to activate it and one to Deactivate it. With the activate i have to type in Host name and Domane Then underneath the look for DNS server boxes. But i don't have the box with "Obtain DNS automatically" Do i have to type anything in any where!!

win98? Ahh... make sure you got WIN98SE. Otherwise you can forget the entire WLAN stuff cos 98 straight doesn't support it.

I configured two routers, one siemens and one vigor and they both answered to 192.168.1.1

Perhaps you should reset your router and then type in http://192.168.1.1 into the address bar - if that doesn't work you got win 98 I reckon...

BTW, I've got an update (but I think it is German)
Nobby
Sorry i forgot to mention it is win 98.

It's worse than it would seem

Surely IPconfig didn't work here - it's an XP utility. You would normally need to use "WinIPcfg" under Win9x...

It really is NOT recommended to use Win9x for any broadband or wireless stuff. It will/might/should/could work, but it's not stable or reliable, and often needs lots of add-ons...

win 98se that is
YorkshireLad6
Run winipcfg, select your ethernet device in the drop-down box and click on "renew" - tell us what numbers you see...

My little crap-top works on win98

Its slow.. but its wireless..

98SE is good, that's what I had.

Just to go through the basics once again:

1. If it's a desktop make sure (imperative this one) that you first install the driver and then plug the pci WLAN card. If you haven't done so remove the pci card, reboot the system, deinstall the driver, reboot the system and install anew

2. Now reset your router (there usually is a little button that you can only press using a pen - keep it pressed for 5 seconds or so)

3. Start the browser of your choice and enter http://192.168.1.1 and off you go

Just noticed you live in Bielefeld - I would have offered to come round, but I need a lot of marmite for that kind of distance :-)
YorkshireLad6
You still have fixed IP addresses. You have to change this, and for the life of me, in Win98, I can't remember how... Somewhere under the network properties you have to change the TCP/IP characteristics of the network adapter...

...

This won't help - his adapter has a fixed IP address outside the subnet of the router. He needs to change the adapter to get a dynamic address from the router... (or change the router to be in the same subnet, which is even more difficult as he can't access it in any case...)

alright YL6 - since I don't even know what you mean by adapter I'll leave it in your capable hands :-)

Regards and good luck

Ethernet card, WLAN card or whatever...
Nobby
i think its about time i got some one to come round and have a look ah!!!??
Iv tried to change the IP address in the options window from my netzwerk card, also over the DOS window But always get a message that there's a conflict with 00:30:FI:EB:EZ:E7:?? Is that the MAC address ?? (iv looked a bit in the internet also) But still don't know how to change it.
Thank's for all your help (all of you) i think I'll get some one round . Not unless some comes up with anytthing else
patster
you need to go to control panel->networking (iirc, on W98) to change the IP address of the adaptor in the PC then choose something like 192.168.2.10 (basically 192.168 then anything other than 2.1). This requires a reboot.

Here´s an IPCONFIG from someone with an (almost wink.gif ) working setup (his default gateway address looks wrong)...

you should at the very least be able to ping 192.168.2.100 as described above (this is the actual address of the router, 192.168.2.1 is the DHCP address).

If this doesn´t work there is no point proceeding further until this is fixed.
pepper
@ paster - Err that's wrong, looking at your IPCONFIG, the .100 is your address, so pinging .100 will just prove if the interface is alive and answering. In this case you should be pinging the .1 address or the default gateway which is the router !
Grinner
Why not simply take the router and let someone else programme it

Someone with XP or similar..

Even take your PC/laptop
YorkshireLad6
If someone else does it they'll need both PC and router - the basic problem is with the PC - once that is sorted then the router can be configured...

I think I've just screwed up real bad and need some expert advice...

I was trying to configure the router and did not see or pay close enough attention to the key that was generated by the router configuration utility when I entered the password I'd chosen. I must've (brilliantly) saved everything as when I tried to re-access the router I was blocked and asked to provide the network key which I don't have. Does anyone know what can be done to work around this, if at all possible? I assume there must be someway of working around what is basically a lost password problem without being forced to throw the modem/router away? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Grinner
there is a recessed reset button on the back... I think..!
YorkshireLad6
Simply connect by wire and change the settings. Wireless security only secures wireless connections. Wired connections are as secure as the wire that connects them.

Superb! Thanks for that common sense reply - everything works now. smile.gif
