Does anyone know what is planned for November to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the wall?

There are events planned all year. Check out http://www.mauerfall09.de/.

Those red balloons they are floating around the city look really lame. I hope they come up with something more inspired. But it's an important year. I look forward to reading exciting things about it.

DSL weren't you here when the wall fell down? or when it was built?
DSLBerlin
I came to Berlin 18 months before the Wall fell down.

I have lots of photos, but sadly too few immediate memories other than the bad food.
loberto
jeez. how old are you?
DSLBerlin
Same age as you, Schlampe. No, I was only 17 when I came then. Oddly, I still have a German friend in Berlin who remembers me from that time.

Sadly, there was no Toytown Queer Beer back then: Gay Thursday drinks (Queer Beer)
loberto
did they even have gays back then?

They should have a reenactment of it. Build a stucco wall, free graffetti day, two east germans standing there while 10,000 germans rush through, 99 Luftballons playing, drunks every where..etc etc or we could just burn down that Starbucks at the Bradenburg Gate same thing.

Dear Genosse Perdido,

That sounds like an ideal gesture against Western Cultural Imperialism. Please submit detailed proposals in triplicate (copies will be sent to the Ministry for State Security and the Politbüro for approval) and they will be placed on the agenda for discussion at the 30th Party Congress.

Vorwärts mit Toytown gegen Faschismus und Imperialismus! Alles zum Wohle des Volkes!

Perfect example why it took Hitler to bring Communism to the Germans because the local commies were always to busy planning and never spontaneously(sp?) acting. ha ha

As for burning down the Starbucks I think half of the Toytown collective(not me) would be in a hissy fit if it happened. UhmmmI like a double frappucino with skim , extra cream, one half decaf, just like they do it in Italy. I want that whole European experience like they do in the states..

Fall of the Berlin Wall
Why do so many people insist on calling the damned thing the Berlin Wall?
After all, when the DDR regime went belly up, the equally obnoxious fence along the deutsch-deutsche Grenze also "fell".

Maybe because of the different histories of the German-German border and the Berlin Wall?

The East/West German border was effectively sealed in 1952 - the Berlin Wall coming later in 1961 and being that much more emotive and poignant as it divided a major city rather than running across forest and farmland.

(With apologies to residents of places such as Modlareuth which became divided communities in 1952 - and to those East Germans who were forcibly moved from their homes as their villages were "too close" to the West).
