Augsburg Folk Festival (Volksfest) - Munich

A mini-Oktoberfest, 28.Aug.-13.Sep.2009

Johnny English
Must admit I have never actually attended this thing? Any Augsburgers out there with an opinion? Might be worth organising a little TT group one day if anyone is interested?? Especially as would act as a warm-up to the main event and give you a chance to dust off the Lederhosen etc.

At €6,40 a beer it almost covers the costs of an ICE from Munich :-)

I would like to return your visit from last year. Keep us posted!

I was stationed in Augsburg over 10 years ago, and the Plärrer fest was always the nicest one. However, it is not big by any means (36,000 m2).

It sounds like a great idea to have a warm up there though, given the number of Toytowners in the Munich area. It’s big enough to be worth a day trip, Augsburg is very accessible, and the Plarrer isn’t far from the main train station.

Never been the Augsburg one, but on the whole I prefer the smaller Volksfeste to Oktoberfest because there's still a good atmosphere but you don't have to get there at 8am to "appreciate" it. You also don't need to start organising a visit there six months in advance either!

Sadly the Freisinger Frühlingsfest has been cancelled this year and replaced with some outdoor cultural event thing that I secretly think sounds quite interesting but which I publicly hate because I've missed the Frühlingsfest for the past three years. Bloody artists.

The dates on that linked website are still from 2008 -- the 2009 dates are

28.08. bis 13.09.2009

And there's one in Spring too from 12.04. bis 26.04.2009.

This kicks off shortly. Has anyone here been? Is it totally lame - or worth a night out etc?

I have been every year for the last 3 years, spring and autumn - it is especially good if you go on the day when there are fireworks (Friday or Saturday night I think). the combination of sausage, rides, beer tents slap your thigh music, sugared nuts, candy floss AND fireworks makes it worth it.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm...

The combination of:

1. sausage
2. rides
3. slap your thigh music
4. sugared nuts
5. candy floss
6. fireworks

Brilliant. 6 out of 7 things I hate.

Beer I like.
