Just a quick note to say I checked out Chopan Restaurant (Afgan) after it received a 5 STAR rating from Munich's leading "going out" mag, Prinz.

Arrived and ordered water, which they forgot. Reminded them when they eventually came back for food and drink order, (didnt apologize). Brought us the wrong starters, and wouldn't believe us that we had ordered something else!!
Main dish arrived, chicken was over cooked and dry, and the lamb was very chewy and fatty.
All in all, NOT a five star rating by any stretch of the imagination. I probably wouldnt have written this if the service had been OK. After all, the place wasnt packed, good service and a friendly smile should be achievable by any restaurant.
In my humble opinion, if you are into food in this direction, stick to PUR PUR.

or Lemar (just south of Marienplatz). Love it.

I was invited this week to Chopan for a friends birthday. I found everything to be fine. There were times that we actually had to stand up and stick our heads over the counter to order more drinks, but apart from that it was ok. Food was great too and I wouldn't have a problem recommending it.

Chopan is really near my house, and I'd go a lot more often if the service were a bit better. The food is good, though.

I also have to load off my opinion on CHopan -- went there a couple of times, found the food alright if overpriced (all it really is is a fairly small portion of rice and a some veggies that maybe cost them EUR 2,--, at best - and they charge over 10 EUR for that!
Anyhow, what really put me off the place last time we went was the extrem unfriendliness of the staff - I mean, are they trying to make money, or are their customers just a nuisance to them?? I wanted to have a particular table -- the big one upstairs, and I had made a point of pointing that out on the phone (and they speak good German, so no excuses there!!). Had been assured that it´d be available, only to find his great-aunt + assorted family sitting at that table when we got there! They of course tried to assign some other table to us, which I quite politely declined, pointing out to them that we had expressly asked for that particular table and had been told we could indeed have it (also, it wasn´t like we would have disturbed the family members eating or anything, they were just hanging around there!). A bit of a discussion followed, and we sat down at the other table which I really didn´t enjoy, and being the German taht I am, I decided that we were the paying customers after all who maybe should be given precedence ... we did get the table in the end, but all in all it was a most unpleasant experience, and the people I as with (my American boyfriend and an American girlfriend) were no help, either...

I guess it´s safe to say that service at that restaurant is anything but particularly friendly; I now also remember another incident at that place - don´t recall all the details, but I think it was some time in the summer, it was hot and there wasn´t a lot of business or something -- we were looking to eat a bit before going to the Cinema and went by the Chopan. Door was open and all, and there was one table occupied by diners. However, when we opened the door, we were told by the owners that they were indeed closed !??!!??. When I then asked how come the door is open and how come there are other people inside, eating?? they said something like "they are regulars" or some such bullshit. That was certainly one way of making sure we would never become the latter!!!

Enough said on the Chopan -- we went to another Afghan restaurant yesterday, the Hindukush off Rosenheimer Straße --- AND LOVED IT!!! everything was great, the people, the interior, the food, the wine -- outstanding!!! Totally to be recommended, and it´s close to both the Kunstpark (if you´re under 19), the Elserhalle (if you like shows) and the Museum Lichtspiele (EVERYone loves movies!!)

Hey, we've been to the Chopan Restaurant several times and thoroughly enjoyed it. Great, comfortable setting, personal and friendly staff, and the food was awesome! We can't wait to get back there!

I was at the Chopan close to Rosenheimerplatz tonight and really enjoyed it.
Was planning to go somewhere else, but that was closed and we stumbled across this one and decided to give it a try.

Service was very friendly, food was very good and portions were enough. I asked my dish to be a bit more spicy but the other with nothing extra and it came exactly like that to the table.

I found prices to be fair, especially compared to the other Afghan restaurant I know which is Lemar. Also the service was a lot friendlier and faster than in Lemar, where I was just last week.

And being the curious person that I am I asked if they were related to Lemar and yes, they are all owned by the same family. The guy running the place is the cousin of the guy running Lemar.

Would recommend it and would go again as well.
