pointman
Another poll question for my party this Friday, Nov. 14th. See Farewell Party in Munich Nightlife for full details. Know i'm trying to find a DJ, and I would like to see what type of music the TT crowd perfers... so let me know.
MysteryMan
Ask the dude who just bought the Technics Turntable. (handle escape me at the moment)
pointman
mr. technics r u out there?
barbiejane
Yes, I'm completely openning myself up here for ridicule, now that I've already admitted going to a Def Leppard concert, but you forgot to list Country Western.
pao
Yeah, point, that's me, but we've already talked about this.
sparty
Country & Western is hardly known here in Europe...way not as much as in the US.
pointman
barbie: sorry hun, but i didn't forget.
pao: yeah but, turntables are bit differnent then mp3 cds?
sparty: i agree!
barbiejane
That's funny, according to the MTV European music awards, until a couple years ago, Country was the top selling genre around the world (when Hip-Hop passed it up). Maybe that just means Americans spend the most money on music, or MTV is just wrong. . . I'm certainly no expert.
Big C
well there are a lot of americans buying music.
but i'm afraid as sparty said, country and western ain't that popular here.
Although I do remember that in the nevada desert it was the only station that we could get in the middle of nowhere!
Jimbo
Good people of Toytown: 80s/90s??? Please re-evaluate your lives. NOW.
barbiejane
Sorry, I should have known that the poll was only meant for the Europeans on this site and didn't necessarily mean to include Americans. Not surprising tongue.gif
pointman
maybe we can play on country track for you barbie, but again didn't say you wouldn't be able to come?
Keydeck
Jimbo, chart music in the 80's and some of the 90's was primarily shite. Much as it is now. But that period saw some of the most talented & most successful bands ever.
Big C
i don't care how talented they were, i can hear that shite at any disco / bar i want in munich. something a little different or interesting would be good.
barbiejane
thanks for the offer Pointman, and yes, I am unable to make it.

Just to clarify though, while I do enjoy country music, I don't usually find it the most enjoyable genre at a party and can promise that we didn't play any at our wedding reception. Not there this is anything wrong with if someone else reading this board did.
Jimbo
Err...actually, I think we need a poll on that:

Is it wrong to play country music at your wedding?

1. yes
2. Yes
3. Definitely
Sanielle
My aunt played "friends in low places" at her wedding... I gues it all depens on whether the grooms "dips" or not
Snow White
Don't supppose anyone else likes jodelling, Austrian early 80's rap and Norwegian/ Danish aristocracy Calypso band do Bollywood-style Beatles covers (Nina and Frederik, Norwegian Wood - look it up if you don't believe me)?
Jimbo

Snow White

sparty
Oh yes, sing it! I'll bring my video camera biggrin.gif
MysteryMan
Like (almost) all music genres (except German Polka) Country has it's good artists. Wilco, Josh Rouse, Calexico are all respectable. Loose records in London send out some good stuff:

What happened to Funk?

Get ur groove on and get funky!!!
pointman
jimbo: i'm with you 80/90's in the lead you can't be serious, guys where are you?
snow: in preperation for your musical debut should murphy's be handing out free earplugs w/ the beers tonight? j/k tongue.gif
foxy: yeah funk is great, just forgot, unlike country which i intentionly left off (still luv you barbie), and now i'm begining to think i should of done the same for the 80/90s genre.
barbiejane
That's ok, if I had made a list for what music to include at a party, I wouldn't have included country either, though I do enjoy it in the car sometimes.

BTW-- did you ever take a visit to the SaddleRack while it was open?
Keydeck
So, let's see how much of the 80's nstuck with those of you who were around for it.

http://www.yetanotherdot.com/asp/80s.html

I managed a score of 70.
barbiejane
That was pretty fun. I don't know if I should be ashamed of scoring an 83, but I did get 5 extra points and shamefully knew the Friends in Low places bonus question.
Showem
Very cool link Keydeck. I found myself immediately hearing the tune to about 20 songs as soon as I read the line from it. Bizzare what you can remember and what you can't.

I got a very miserable 62.5, but I hated 80s music. There are some classics on that list though.
Showem
Oh, and Pointman, the reason that people are talking more in the beer than in the music poll is because as long as the music isn't total shit, people will enjoy themselves.
randy
Ooh, I only scored 41.5 :\

Oh well, I never listened much to the charts. Keydeck's right though, there was plenty of good music during that time - no need to write off 2 decades of music just 'cause your mom was still driving you to the mall and buying your clothes.

There's great music now, then, and fore. Really great, actually.

Oh, I think country can be swell at weddings - in fact, a couple I know was recently married and they had some Johnny Cash and the lovely Tennessee Waltz (old version - not Patti Page) playing. Put a tear in my eye, that did smile.gif

I don't care for much Nashville country; but I think Mystery Man's spot on with the alt. country genre. Wilco's "Being There" is a fucking great, as are the other artists.

And going further back, My Morning Jacket's show was pretty good. Nostalgic 70's chord/solo rock done really well. Reminded me a bit of the Beach Boys mixed with definite Neil Young stuff, and a bit of VU at the end. Pretty cool time trip.
Granny
I managed to get 23.5 not bad I think.
Hazza
I got 113.5

I'm scared...
Jimbo
Guess I'm too young because I didn't even get 20...
randy
That or you just have better taste...

Hazza, impressive - it's hard to remember the lyrics without hearing them. I did get video killed the radio star, and am embarrassed to remember that he wished it was jessie's girl...
Showem
I came up with a great new version to that song.

"Internet killed the Video Star..."
Granny
When Opa was perfecting his English, I pointed out a fequent mistake with the pronounciation of the letter "V". To draw his attetion to it I would always sing, "wideo killed the wadio star", now he no longer needs that reminder. That's of course is why I got at least that one correct.
