How to keep entertained if you're broke

SO the New Years Eve festivities are over...

Now I find myself completely broke, on a party break, and waiting for my new job to start... Does anyone know of any interesting things to do during the day that don't cost anything?

I know there is the free tours of Berlin (http://www.newberlintours.com, these guys are good!) And that all of the state-run museums are free on thursday nights. Any other ideas?

Thank you!

the only thing i could remember is the visit to the top of bundestag and the glass dome

Sorry, I don't have any great ideas to offer (am new to Berlin) but wanted to say thanks for the link to the free tour - I didn't know about that. I was planning to go out and play tourist tomorrow so might join it. What is the deal - do you tip the guide at the end whatever amount you think the tour was worth?

You could go into some of the wonderful Universities or Art schools, enroll as a guest student and visit some of the lectures. I always wanted to do that when I was in Berlin, but I never had enough time.

I actually just tried it today and thought it was really interesting! I have been in berlin for about 4 months and it feels good to finaly know some of the history of this facinating city! And the guide presented it in a way that was interesting and funny. Not in that dry way my history teacher used to explain things. Plus its alot easier to pay attention to real buildings, as opposed to looking in text books.

I wanted to tip him alot more, but could only give him the change from my lunch :-(

I do want to eventually go to art school for real... how does this guest student thing work? Are there any lecures in english(or danish) or only german?

I believe a lot of the museums in town have free admission the last four hours before closing every Thursday. I could google it for you, but I'm too lazy.

Here is some info für Universität der Künste: http://www.udk-berlin.de/sites/content/the.../index_ger.html

I just saw it is only free if you are enrolled in another German University as well, if not it is 15 Euro for 6 month.

I guess that is just how it is when you offer free tours. How much do you think the average person tips? Do you give it directly to your guide or do you put it in a container or envelope or something? I am always nervous about not tipping enough or tipping too much but the latter I guess doesn't offend.

The concentration camp Sachsenhausen ( KZ Sachsenhausen (Wikipedia) ) is interesting and there is no entrance fee. I've been there three times bringing friends there and they always were very impressed. I was much more impressed when I visited it during winter.

What made Sachsenhausen more interesting in the winter?
