Where to see dinosaurs near Hamburg

Paleontology museums in the area

mlovett
My 4 year old is getting interested in dinosaurs. Is there anywhere (worth the drive) in northern Germany to see fossils? And I don't mean little old blue haired ladies -- we've seen plenty of them.

thanks

They have a natural history museum with tons of dinos in Frankfurt. Not much else there AFAIK.

Not near Hamburg, but north to me.

My son loves dinos, but was not too impressed with the bones and static displays.

I wonder if any of the University Paleo departments allow kids to come and have a look? I remember checking out all the cool rocks on display at the Geo dept of my mom's Uni when I was a kid.

He is also a bit obsessed with bones/ skeletons these days, so he might actually enjoy seeing a display, albeit static.

What about Neanderthal? A bit of a drive from Hamburg, but a pretty important location in terms of fossil finds.

You guys are only 3 hours from Bilund, the real Legoland.

We hit the one in Ulm when it is open, they have some fake lego dinos on display! And they have lots of stuff appropriate for 4 year olds and even younger. We did an annual pass and have used it many times.

What about the Dinopark in Niedersachsen

Not too far away from Hamburg.

We went a few years ago. As well as lots of life size models they also have an area where real dinosaur prints have been uncovered as well as a "Mit-Mach" area. Our son loved it (was about 7 years old then).

There's a really cool place near Osnabrück where you can see huge dinosaur tracks crawling at an angle up a wall. Damn! Will have to get back to you on exactly where.

Does he like whales? There's a life-sized reconstruction of a sperm whale at a wonderful maritime museum in Tönning, about an hour or so away from Hamburg.

The Senckenberg is awesome.

Thanks, guys!! He likes just about anything... he definitely liked the whale exhibits at the huge aquarium in Monterey, CA. And the dino park in Niedersachsen looks like a winner. He has been whining about wanting to go back to CA... I think mainly because I used to drive him to these sorts of places practically on a daily basis there, but rarely do it here. I too am going nuts with this cold weather.

And thanks for the reminder, gatze, that we need to visit LegoLand.

Legoland in Billund is fantastic, just a nice day trip from HH - they don't open until 10 and close at 18, 20 or 21:00. It was plenty for us. If you go look at E-Bay or www.legoland.dk, or go to their shop in Mönckebergstr. All these 3 usually have some really good free child admission offers. On E-Bay people sell vouchers which they got for free with larger sets. Sort of one kid goes free per adult thing, though right now there don't seem to be any around.

Check TT member's "Derek Beggs" posts.

He made a papiermâché dino for his son and wants to sell it (cos they made another one that is even better...). Awesome thing.

Even if you don't want to buy it, have a look at it, it's great

In Hagenbeck they have got some statues of Dinosaurs, not many but maybe interesting for you. They are not bones but real seize statues.

We've been and it's well worth it for both children and adults. They even take the kids on school field trips there.

We just went to one of the Stuttgart Natural History Museums, Loewentor (Not Rosenstein)

I was surprised by the amount of dinosaur stuff they had. I had read Frankfurt was well-known for dinosaurs, but Stuttgart seemed to have more!

Frankfurt had a few big impressive bone displays (Trex, Stegosaurus, Brontosaurus maybe?) but they did not seem to have much beyond that.

Stuttgart seemed like almost the whole place was dinos! Different periods, bones, full body reconstructions, kid's area to dig for bones, interactive computer deals for dinos, drawing, amber room, exhibits on digging, etc.

They only had a T-rex head and a triceritops skull, and no large traditional skeletons. They seemed to have a lost of water displays. Some scary monster alligator things and a few Bessie Loch-ness monster things.

And a Woolly mammoth skeleton and reconstruction too!

Not a bad way to spend an hour or two with the kids. $4 Adult, kids under 6 free.

And I know Stuttgart is not near Hamburg, I just parked this here instead of a new thread.
