the same as it does for everybody else- you need to go to the embassy and ask them what you need.

This web site should give you lots of info about visas and required paperwork for a Brit to move to Canada:
Immigration Section of the Canadian High Commission in London

As for Toronto, well I'm biased as it is my home town. It's a great city, and I think you'll like it there.

i can't believe people can't be bothered to read the relevant government websites before asking such questions. laziness or stupidity, not sure which.

good point about Toronto:

it is a big city so has everything you can possibly want.

bad point about Toronto:

it is the most densely populated area of Canada. The suburbs go on for miles in each direction. Traffic is a nightmare at peak hours if you have to commute into the city by car (there is a public mass transit network but it is not as extensive as German networks tend to be).

You don't get too much for being UK except that you are able to apply for a 1 year open working holiday visa, see http://www.bunac.org/ or you can go under a live-in caregiver visa. If you do the latter, you will have the right to apply for permanent residency after 2 years.

This is a good board for Canada immigration: http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigrati...board/index.php
Toronto is cool. It's a big city, very diverse but everybody mostly getting along. Too cold in the winter, too hot in the summer though.

I personally think there are better places to go than Toronto. That's probably because I'm from out west. But really, it's muggy in the summer, and ice cold in the winter. Seriously. I'll take -45 plus windchill any day in the prairies before I go to Toronto when it's -15. To be fair though, there is a diverse group of people living there, and everyone I know that lives there, loves it until they get fed up and move somewhere else.
But is there a specific reason you would choose Toronto? If it's just because you've heard good things about it, and not because you know people there, you may want to look into other places as well. You know, just throwing it out there..

it actually has a fairly mild climate for Canadian standards due to Lake Ontario (cools in the summer and warms in the winter)

yeah, they panic with a few snowflakes!
Its one of the warmer cities in the winter! I would take a -30 day in Winnipeg with a bluesky and sunshing anyday over a typical -10 and overcast in TO!
but like someone already said, I am from the West, and have a great dislike of TO- the center of the universe.

average low temp in January is -7 degrees c, compared to -10 for Calgary and -11 for Ottawa, -15 for Montreal and -23 for Winnipeg.

They don't have the worst winter of all, that's for sure but I think their summers are among the hottest, especially because it's gets so humid.

yes, very humid summers.

average July highs:

Ottawa 28
Toronto26
Montreal 26
Winnipeg 26
Calgary 23

The humidity from the lake makes things feel a lot colder though. Like Carm, I'd take a crytal clear, sunny, -40 Calgary day over a grey, wet, chill you to the bone, -10 Toronto day.

Weather aside, when it comes to social life Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver are the way to go.

was a balmy -29 yesterday on the way to the airport! BlueSky, blinding sunshine! Awesome! Landed in TO, was -3 and grey and rainey!
