I've talked to several people about this while out and about so I thought I start something up and see what the interest is.
As many know, I know a lot about wine and love to talk about it. Lots of people would like to learn about wine, therefore I liked to arrange some tastings. Tastings would occur as follows: everyone bring a bottle of wine between €10-15 (we need to have wines with a bit of complexity if we'll be talking about them). I'll arrange the bottles in order and each one will be tasted and discussed. Aside from that I'll answer any questions about wine making, grapes, regions, styles, pairings, etc. that anyone asks me.
Everyone should also bring something small for food to go with the wine. By this I mean simple things like a cheese, cold meat, olives, fruit, etc. If everyone brings something small it ends up being a combined feast.
I suggest a Friday or Sat. because then we could go out and meet up with others afterwards. I can host but only up to 6 people. But am willing to do it somewhere else if there's a volunteer.
So who's interested?

Me! If I can make it (depending on the day selected). Are you setting a country opr regional them or anything ?
Winegirl
Jan 19 2005, 3:22 pm
I thought the first would be best if people just bring a wine from a region they like. Future ones could have themes, but I thought it would be best to start it open so I can see what people like.

Great idea Winegirl. I probably already know more about wine than is good for me (i.e. how to open a bottle) but it would be nice to actually learn something about the stuff.

I would be interested in this, depending on the date, obviously.
It does sound quite dangerous, though

I'd be up for this, maybe we could borrow the back room of the TwiBa if meeting others there later on (so they get business). I could host, I guess... depends when as I need to move out of my place...

Recommend you host before you have the decorators in Jooly. Or else insist on white wine only.

We'd likely come to an event held on a weekend. I'm just wondering how many different tastings and different sorts makes sense at once though? Sorry, voice of reason overpowering my dipsomania for once.

The profi tasting parties where someone shows up and does the whole spiel for you will normally bring 6-8 bottles of wine with the appropriate dried bread, cheese and what not to clear the palate. This takes like 2 hours or so and your only suppose to sip a few sips of each wine and smell it alot. After all that, then you get to go back and revisit the ones you liked while you order numerous bottles of those you like. Once this happens, it takes 15-30 minutes to loose your tastebuds.

Note: If you order enough bottles, the tasting thing can actually be free.

I'd like to join in. Sat. 29th or Sun 6th would be fine. Is this a non-age-limit event? Twisted Bavarian sounds good as place. Everyone knows it and it's cosy. For example, on Sun 6th after Stitch and Bitch. Swop the knitting needles for the wine ...

poll added at the top. Anyone can do that, btw. Anyone can also add an event to the Calendar, too, then it'll show up on the forum homepage all seven days before the event, and gives everyone a good idea of what all's going on.
I want to come to this wine tasting bit too. I'd love an Austrian theme night (just for future reference).

While I think TB would be a great place I doubt they would want to host since we won't be buying drinks or food. Although I love it, the food there would not be a good pairing for a wine tasting.
Seems to be Friday 28th or Sat 29th is favored. Can anyone host? I can but then would have to limit it to 6 and it seems like there's more interest than that.

I can host then if needs be, but be aware my flat is a tip.. also the "dining room table" has gone. Still have big coffee table, breakfast bar in kitchen and small table (seats 4) in lounge, so I guess enough space. 8-10 seats of various types...

Or are you going to make to make us spit it out Winegirl?
Winegirl
Jan 21 2005, 10:09 am
Okay so Friday the 28th it is. Can we make the start time 7pm?
@SUB, I can teach you guys how to be able to taste with spitting but I don't think any of us will be interested in that on a Friday night
However when you start a tasting at 10am and have to taste 75 Syrah wines spitting is a must!

Okay here's a recap of how it's going to work plus some more details:
Each person bring a bottle of wine between €10-15. Also bring a small amount of food to compliment wine, ie a cheese, a meat, olives, veggies or fruit, loave of bread or crackers, etc.
You can bring a wine from anywhere you like. If you'd like ideas you can PM me.
Please everyone try to arrive on time because I need to put the wines in order. If you are arriving late bring a full bodied red.
PM me if you're coming and I'll relay the numbers to JoolyB. If you know what wine you are bringing before hand send me a PM (even if you just have a grape or region in mind) and I'll try to find out some interesting info about it in particular. But not really necessary.

Is it definitely on Jan 28th at 7pm?
JoolyBooly
Jan 21 2005, 2:11 pm
OK, so yes, Friday 28th at 7pm sharp.
I shall provide either a Prosecco if you want a sparkling white to try, or I'll try and get the Merlot which won the "world's best" award last year (my wine-man was in South Africa, don't know if he's back yet)..
Then please see Eric the Hamster's Cinema link... Chewy and I are going to leave at 22:30 (10.30pm) to see the Phantom of the Opera at Mathäser. Either you can continue without us, come with, go home, or come with into town and head to a bar somewhere.
Sounds like a fun night to me!

Any suggestions regarding a good wine to bring?

I'm up for this too if there's still room? Though have no idea what wine to bring that will cost €10-15 as I normally go for cheap and cheerful

Would be good to taste some proper wines though!

Jan 21 2005, 2:51 pm
your best bet is to try a proper, private wine shop rather than a supermarket. Jaques' wine stores are a chain (like Oddbins inthe UK I guess).
If not, I can recommend HIT supermarket at
Rosenheimerplatz (in the
S-Bahn shopping centre), they have an excellent selection.
For students, there are planty of good wines at aroung €8 too. The award-winning Merlot I'll probably bring, for example, is €8,50.
And the whole point is to try different wines to see if they're good, don't worry, we won't be judging who brought the best wine!
Topsy
Jan 21 2005, 2:55 pm
I'll probably bring a white wine.
If I drink red, then I always get either a Chianti or a Rioja.
But I don't know much about white wine

Jan 21 2005, 3:06 pm

I agree that the are enjoyable wines in that price range so please no one take this the wrong way. It's just a note about wine awards that often confuses people. Wine awards are nearly always given in price classes. Therefore, they'll also be an award winning wine in the under 5 catagory. It doesn't mean it's better or equal to a wine in the over 50 catagory with the same award title.
Wine Spectator, Wine Advocate, and Wine Enthusiast all do their 100pt ratings based on price. So they are not saying that they found a 90pt $7 bottle as good as a 90pt $65 wine.
That being said paying more does not mean getting a better wine either. Although there are certain price cut-offs that are general quidelines.
When I'm just drinking before I go out I usually only spend €6 on a bottle. It's enjoyable, better than beer, but not too complex. When I really want to enjoy myself, I pull out a $30+ bottle from my cellar.

Is there a Jacques' wine store somewhere near the centre...don't think I've ever seen one! I shall just get the person serving then to advise me on what to bring within the price range. Probably a white wine.
