If you are new in Munich, or live in Munich and are new to this forum, feel free to post a message here to introduce yourself to the rest of the TT community.

Do not, however, ask your newbie questions here about life in Munich. Nobody will answer them.

If you have basic questions like
  • How do I find an apartment to rent?
  • Which are the best bars/nightclubs/restaurants?
  • How do I get English-language TV?
  • Which is the best district to live in?
  • Where are the best schools for learning German?
  • How do I meet people?
  • Or one of the other multitude of questions that all newcomers ask...
...then use the search function. All these questions and more have been asked and answered many times over already. Feel free to post to one of the existing threads to ask for updates. Do not, however, start a new thread about one of these topics that has already been covered a thousand times - it is tiring for the regular readers of this board and they won't help you.

If you're looking to meet people, or want to know what's going on, see the Munich meet ups section as well as the Munich events calendar.

Also note, TT is not a "contacts board". Do not make a post like "Hi, I'm new in town, I like cinema and clubbing, if anyone wants to go out for a drink let me know". This post will not work. Nobody will contact you. If you want to meet people you need to be proactive and attend one of the events. Newcomers are always welcome to show up. Make sure you post a reply to the event discussion first though, to let people know you are coming.

For a humorous look at the kind of stupid questions that newcomers ask, and the questions you should be avoiding, see the pleeeze help me thread.

Hi everyone @ TT,

I am not quite new in Munich anymore, have been here for almost a year now, but I am new to this forum and actually new to using a forum at all, never really had the desire to chat on the web before.

I am not a native English speaker, but another German, who has spent some time in the US going to high school, college, an internship and I studied English and American Studies in Germany, so my English is close to fluent :-)
I have spent part of my last holiday in the lovely city of London agian, where I can imagine working for a whiie if it weren't so hard to earn a living in that far too expensive city. Will have to see if that ever happens? I also plan to spent my next vacation around New York and Jersey again, where I studied for two semesters. I regularly enjoy going to The English Comedy club they have here in Munich for a good laugh. So I would love to connect with people no matter which English-speaking country they come from.

Since I work too long hours during the week and spent too much time out of Munich on weekends, I have not been able to get to konw a whole lot of people around this town. Hopefullly TT will be a good opportunity for improving my social life in Bavaria. I love the movies, the theatre, literature and music - anyone going to the Vampire Weekend concert tomorrow? I'll be there :-)

Well, this has turned out too long of an intro. I will be shutting up now.
Cheers,

Hi everyone,
Yes TT seems to be an interesting forum and I was introduced to it by my daughter, whom I will be staying with for a few months. While doing a million things I want to take back great memories. Just like most people, I like to travel, read, eat vegetarian food (it is catching on ) and talk too. In Germany I find that a bit difficult. Looking forward to thoughts and suggestions.
I am a member of the local Toastmasters chapter back home, and would like to attend a few meets here as well. I am hoping for many suggestions on where to eat and nice places to visit in and near Munich. I am here with my husband (who thankfully could join me for sometime), to celebrate my daughters birthday on the coming Monday. I have not missed it for the past 24 years, and although Germany is new to me and the language a bit of a problem, I would like to take her for a nice weekend close to Munich. Do suggest lovely places and any information that can help is welcome.
Other than that, I love flowers and will be trying a bit of gardening, probably in pots. The food, flora and the lovely weather has inspired me. Time to say au revoir, and have a good stay.

Hi Folks!

Toronto-nian here. Heading to Köln (or Düsseldorf) in about a month's time for a new job. I'm 24 and would love to meet some new people in the area. Though, most of you are in the South. sad.gif

Anyway, this forum has been fantastic in answering my questions and concerns. I'm totally oblivious as to what to expect...but it should be quite the learning experience.

Hi, I am new to this forum and will be moving to Munich in July.
I'm in my late 20s, originally from Germany (near Nuremberg), but have lived in Australia and the UK for the last 5 1/2 years.
It would be great to meet some English speaking people in Munich, so that I don't forget how to speak it wink.gif
NZGirl08
Hi everyone,

I'm a Kiwi living in Dublin's fair city. I'll be moving to Munich in August and am slightly apprehensive (due to my currently inability to speak German and the fact that I will be arriving friendless!) but excited all the same - hey it's all part of the adventure right?
kalida
Well...im not new to Germany, been here for 7 long years..moved here and there...in Munich since July2007.
number of jobs:1
number of friends: 0
number of drinked beer bottles:100000++++
number of beer bellys: unknown
number of frustrations: uhm...i will subconciousely share it here as the time passes by:)

English is not my mother tongue, german I can speak when i have to, half-integrated in germany (on the outside), just came back from the holiday i spent in the only city I even wanted to be and feel shitty.

I guess thats enough.smile.gif

Is anyone except newcomers ever reading this topic??!!;)
Kay
The answer is yes. Welcome to Toytown. smile.gif

Why don't you join some of the meet ups one of these days? It's a great way to meet new people and make friends.

Hi All,
We will be visiting Munich and staying for a week. My wife will be researching at the library while I am basically planning to hang out with the Kids. Was also wondering if there are any play groups. We have two sons 6 and almost 2 (21 Months.) Would love to get together with other parents in the afternoon at a beer garden and have the kids run around.

Better late than never...

I'm finally registered on TT now... took me long enough eh? I've been living in Munich since last September, and will be here until the end of August, rounding off a nice year of study/work abroad. Then I'll be returning to the states to finish up my undergrad studies but have no fear: I am fully in love with this country (well... in love with the language, food and general culture; could do without the taxes and hints of racism) and will definitely be back...

In the meantime, I'm going to attempt to drink lots of beer, enjoy walks/rides in the English Gardens and travel a little bit more of this continent.

Nice to finally meet you all. :-)

...and hints of racism)

Well, glad there's no racism at all in the States wink.gif

No, really, I know what you mean, and there's definitely some racism in Germany. You'll find fools everywhere... Most of it might be stupidity though. People do say things without thinking about them first. If you talk to them, they might actually understand that what they said was out of order. A little education would probably do the trick.

Only I wonder why this seems to be so much worse in the case of Germany than for all other Countries. No, you didn't say this, I know. But the mere mentioning of it, especially from someone who comes from one of the most racist countries of the world, seems a bit funny. Remember, in the US blacks are still widely underprivileged, and that's not because they are all lazy... wink.gif

I doubt racism in Germany is any worse than racism other countries! In fact if I look at racism in the UK (where I spent a quite a substantial amount of time) I begin to appreciate how in fact little racism here is. Anybody remember the case of the Liverpool boy Anthony Walker, who got murdered by some fucking white supremacists? They killed him by embedding an axe into his head! Thank you very much!

Anyway, welcome here, and welcome in Munich, one of the least dangerous places in Germany BTW smile.gif

Hi to all TTers!

I'm fairly new to the site (as far as registration), but I've been reading posts from this site for months so I thought finally, "WHY NOT JOIN!"

I haven't moved to Germany yet, but in about 8 months or so I will. I will be moving to Nuremberg at first (to be with my fiance) and then once I find a job, I'll move to where it's at (so we will be separated once again. I have been visiting Germany for a while now (since a little bit before we got together) and I absolutely love it there! I'm very excited (to be with my fiance finally) and nervous (because of finding a job). I come to visit the Nuremberg area at least once a month (except for July because I procrastinated and couldn't get a reasonably priced ticket in enough time). I'm originally from Atlanta, but moved to England in 2004 for work purposes. Now my contract is coming to an end so I'll be moving to Germany. I'm in my early 20's. I don't really have any steady hobbies as I'm so easily bored, I find it hard to stick to one thing for very long aka I'm always open to try new things! I love this site because it has helped me so much to prepare to move to Germany because I can start preparing now as opposed to waiting til the last minute! I look forward to meeting some new people from this site so...hit me up anytime, I DON'T BITE!

Anyways, don't want this to turn into a life story so I'll stop now!
GiselleBean
I'm new to TT, I started a week or more ago. I moved to Munich in Dec. from the US. Unlike the post from DEVO, I DO BITE. I like meeting new people, doing outdoorsy things. If you want to know anything else PM me. Just don't send me private pics of your genitalia.
Devo
Oh phooey GiselleBean good thing you said that because I was just about to send you a pic!

Hello all,
First we would like to introduce ourselves to the forum, this being our first post. We've been lurking in the shadows for a little while before we came to the conclusion that registering will be more constructive, at least for us. We will have a ton of questions, knowing nothing about life in Munich, or in Germany in general. Please bear with us for the time being and we thank you in advance for your help and answers. Mostly it will be me, Seb, who’s going to post here, but my wife as well will be an active part of the process.

So, we are a young family, currently living with our 7 years old son in Toronto, Canada. We came to Canada 10 years ago from Romania and while Canada is an awesome country to live in, we would like to return to Europe. Both of us are currently working in IT and have a lot of experience in the field. On the side, we have our photography business as well. At this point, the first question that comes to mind is that if it is worth it to leave everything we have and start from scratch and if so, how hard will it be to make the move, considering that we both hold Canadian and Romanian passports? And if we move, would our son be facing a racist behaviour and be marginalised because he comes from a different country? This is it for now. We will have many more questions, but we do not want to bother you now with all of them at once. Again, we thank you for your help.

Hello from yet another newbie to this site!

Ive been using this site for information ages and it is really helpful. I am hoping to move to Munich within the next six months having briefly worked and visited many times previous. I am therefore currently going through the motions of seeking employment before I move - the usual avenues of agencies and websites etc. If anyone has any good links for Marketing jobs I would be grateful of a PM.

Other than that I am looking forward to meeting you all on the meetups once I arrive!!

Hey, I'll be moving to Munich next week, and I'll attend some TT Meet-ups soon. I'm looking forward to meeting you all.

Hallo alles...
I'm moving to Munich in September for a year (study/internship abroad, at FH Munich and then hopefully BMW) and I'm really excited, but the nerves are starting to set in... My German is really good for the 2 semesters of class I've taken, which is to say it's terrible. I can talk about colors, and furniture, and food... How big of an issue has that been for other people? The other thing that I'm marginally concerned about is- how gay-friendly is Munich, specifically for gay women?

vielen Danke, tschuss!

how gay-friendly is Munich, specifically for gay women?

From a strait woman's point of view, I think it is a fairly tolerant city. I've seen more men/men women/women holding hands and PDA in Munich than in San Francisco. There's even a TT Thursday drinks thing at a gay bar, but I think the straits will certainly crash that one too . . . I know I will when I'm back in September ph34r.gif

I only have gay male friends there, but none of them have expressed any frustrations about discrimination to me. Munich is a pretty progressive city, but it has it's share of ignoramous just like any other city. If you keep a good attitude and put good effort to integrating yourself into the culture, I'm sure you'll find that it's a lovely place to live.

Great attitude Devo . . . I read your posts on the "I'm a black American and it's tough" thread, and I really must say that it's smart of you to prepare yourself before moving to another country.

If you keep it up, you will transition pretty smooth, and TT is a great place to start . . . Hope to see you at some events when I'm back in September biggrin.gif
Devo
Thanks damara4178! The posts from others getting to Germany and struggling made me think "I better start NOW!"

Hi there,

I'm also new, though only to the forum, not to Munich - I've just moved back, after spending a year in England by the sea I so miss here (*sigh*), to be with my Dear who is working for a Munich company. I am German and have lived in Munich before for 11 years, so it really feels like coming home, although my true home would be in the North. But only here you'll find beergardens, the recently renaturalized river to picnic by, clear lakes which can be reached by bike, mountains, culture, nightlife and still not feel you are in a huge city with 1.5mil inhabitants - if it had a coast, it would be perfect ! As you might have guessed, I like being outdoors, enjoy theatre plays, a good night out as well as some quiet "time for two", fast cars and thai food :-)

Take care,
swsilence

There was an interview with two gay women this week in the Süddeutsche Zeitung. I might still have it in my old paper pile. They said the female gay scene is less conspicuous than the male one and less is done for them but the gay bars are generally pretty good.

Hey all,

Just wanted to stop by and say hi. Like most I came across this site whilst looking for information prior to my move form the UK and I just want to say how awesome I think this site is. I would love to hear your personal stories of how you acclimatised to your new life in Germany.

Thanks for being here.

Hi all,

I've been living in Memmingen (OK, not quite Munich) with my Kiwi husband for a year now, and I think that we are finally beginning to settle down. We're moving into our own home shortly, after a year crowding out my parents in the home they retired to a couple of years ago.

I could already speak a bit of German, so the language barrier was not quite so difficult as it might have been, but my husband has been learning from scratch. It took a while to get all of our paperwork sorted out and get registered on a language course. I never realised how awkward the paperwork would be (assumedly far easier if I had understood it at the time), but I'm sure it's the same for any foreigner moving to a new country. We are doing an integration course because we've found it to be the most economical option for us (besides talking to people that we meet, of course). I've looked into the forums here on and off, but never posted, hence the slightly belated hello. Hello!

I work for a distance learning university and my husband is possibly between jobs - we shall find out later today. That could be a bit stressful, but I am sure that things will work out again soon, given a spot of lateral thinking. Moving to a new country is obviously quite a risk, but it was high time for a change. With luck, we shall get along to Munich on and off, but it may be a while off, especially with us moving again in the next week or so.

Cheerio. :-)

Hi everyone! My name is Tracey, Im 23 years old and until Monday morning I will be living in Cape Town , South Africa. I arrive in munich on Monday evening and will be living there for a year. I don't know anyone and am pretty nervous, and my German is not very good. Any friendly person who has some time to show me around and point me in the right direction will be really appreciated.

I will be living in Schwabing with the family I have worked for for almost 2 years. They are all South Africans (they are a terrific famlily!!) and also dont know anyone. The parents are in their 40's and they have twin daughters aged 9 (almost 10). So if there is anyone who is looking to make friends with any of us please contact me; all details are on my profile.

Hopefully see you soon smile.gif

Maybe you should come along tonight to the French Speaking Stammtisch. I think there might be one other native speaker there, the rest of the crew is evaluating how to brush up their French.

Hello TT,

I moved to Munich in January 2006 from the US to be with my German man. My job supported my relocation to Munich although I am on the road a lot for work and have spent mostly only weekends in Munich. After 4 years, the relationship went belly-up and now its time to figure this place out on my own...to stay or to go and how to survive without my own German helping me along.

I have lurked here from time to time and its been a great resource over the last few years. Hope to make it to some events and meet-ups in the near future - I like skiing, hiking, photography, Oktoberfest, dinner parties and, from time to time, a long, fun night out.

See you around,
ChiliRose

Hi, I am neither new in Munich nor English speaking but I had been working in an international company before and I miss English humour, drinking rules - and winter tire discussions very much. So I tried to PM some people - withou reply. As I read above this might be due to the fact I never posted before - so I´ll take this chance and try again...
Have fun!

Hey guys,

I'm going to university here in Munich. I'm not an English native speaker (I'm a Spanish native speaker), but I speak decent English (or at least I think so.. tongue.gif ).
I don't know many English speaking people in Munich so I thought registering here would be a good idea..

See you,

Paul

Hello to all. I am new to this site and would like to introduce myself. I live in New York City and just recently travelled to Munich for the first time. I've travelled to Europe many times but never to Germany. We were there for four days and I loved it. Everything about the trip was great. You can keep the big Wiesn fest. It is too big and loud for my taste and I was a little nauseous after seeing all that beer sloshing around and the smell of the roasting meats.

Other than that Munich was lovely. I stayed in an area at the Johanneskirchen Ubahn. My nephews (in their 20's) went out every night and had a great time. I stayed in the neighborhood with my brothers and hung out at Die Dicke Sophie. We spent a lot of money but did not regret a cent.

I have been reading Der Spiegel every day and reading about different things I saw and did while there. I plan to do a full on vacation next year so am really trying to read in German and get better at the language. Many locals remarked that my pronuciation was very good so it encouraged me to speak more.

Well that is all for now. If anyone wants news or information about New York City, Philadelphia, San Diego or Boston let me know.
I've lived in all these cities so can direct you.

Thank you
Bill (work: Rockefeller Center Manhattan, live: Park Slope Brooklyn) blink.gif

Hello all,

New to both Munich and these forums since about the beginning of October. I will be studying/working here for about a year, then returning to the states. My experiences here have been mixed so far, as a new country is a lot to take in! Anyways, I will try to come to some of the events to meet some people, if there is anyone that ever wants to meet up and have a beer or something feel free to PM me, all I do is go to University and hang out at home.

Hi.. my name is Edgar and I am very new to Munich (2 days), native english speaker although not from the US/Brit/etc... from Costa Rica! Working for my govt on investment promotion... Still dealing/coping with the relocation issue (or mostly feeling out of place, my lack of german speaking skills exacerbates this)... will be here indefinitely but from what I've seen, I think I like this city a lot...

Saludos!
