Guinness in cans

Tips on where to buy

I have just been told by a Guiness loving colleague that he cannot find cans of it in any of the usual places he shopped in. He needs cans as he lives out in the sticks, a long way away from any pubs that may have it on tap.

Can anyone let me know where they have seen it recently.

Cheers

I was told that there is a problem with importing it now due to the requirement of the cans to have a refund (pfand) on them, which obviously the Guinness cans don't have.
Not sure if that's true but I know that I haven't seen them around lately either.

I think its more common in the "draught" bottles over here so that Germans can carry on their obsession with deposits.
Lupo
I love widgets (the device in Guinness cans)! If it is due to the deposit thing, then try going over the border. There´s a great beer shop in the Zurich Hbf where you can find beers from every country. Bit of a ride though. Maybe Salzburg.

You can get it at Higgin and Winterbottom near Frauenhoferstraße.

For the life of me, I can't remember the name, but the underground Irish bar around the corner and down the street from Murphy's will sell ,33 cans of Guinness for 1.50 Euro each...at least it did a couple of weeks ago.

Someone will probably chime in with the name of the place...

karstadt between stachus and Marienplatz sells draught guinness in cans but they're very hit and miss at stocking it ...i bought some in there just after new years and by the time i got to the till the shelf was empty. i pop in every now and again in the hope that they're there ...
Schotte
is there no where then like a big supermarket maybe out of town where you can buy them in bulk?

I only have one can left.
Joe
I think the Hertie by the Hbf might carry Guiness they certainly do a few foreign beers there.
Schotte
someone has just delighted to tell me that Karstadt at Muenchener Freiheit station was selling Guinness the other day.

Result.

Hertie am Hauptbahnhof has small widget cans in a four-pack.
There were complaints from some quarters about the size of the cans but they still strangely became empty...
Must be the Föhn.
Anyway, in the beer and soft drinks dept. next to the gift wrapping in the basement, top row of the shelves facing the backwall/chiller cabinet.

i did and i found nothing interesting.

The first thing to come up when you put "Guinness" in the search field is THIS VERY THREAD. Eerie. It's like a Klein Bottle or something.

Still, he was right: this thread isn't very interesting.

Is this not good enough:

The "Hit" supermarket in the shopping center in Rosenheimerstr often has bottles of Guinness. It's not the stuff with the widget in it, so it doesn't taste like draft Guinness, but it's still a fine beer IMHO.
I forget the name of the shopping center, but if you get off the S-Bahn at Rosenheimerplatz and take the western exit (i.e. heading back towards Isartor), it brings you directly into the shopping center.

It's in the " Motorama" centre, straight up the esalator from Rosenheimer S bahn exit " Gasteig

OK, I know this has been asked before - and as you can see I found the relevent thread, but I'm wondering where cans of Guinness can be bought in Munich (now, in March 2007 - stuff could have changed since these were posted biggrin.gif )

Anyone seen/purchased any recently?
Allershausen
It used to be sold at the EDEKA at the airport, I haven't been there for a while so they may have stopped it. The big problem here with canned beer is the deposit on the cans, 25 cents, which has more or less killed off the canned beer market. In fact the only places I know of that still sell canned beer are petrol stations.

OK, will just have to keep my eyes peeled then...Thanks

You can buy them online from Mc Laughlins Irish Shop in Bremen.
I can find info on postage but 4 cans cost 9 euros.

If you just need guinness as an ingredient then bottles of guinness are easy enough to come by, Tengleman, Rewe and local getränkemart beside me stocks it now along with that kilkenny muck. I'm sure that branches of the same shops in more salubrious areas would also stock the bottles.

EDIT: I just remember getting a Guinness can carryout at the irish folk pub one evening. They have the 330 ml cans if i remember correctly. Cost is 2 or 2.50 per can to take away I think.

Not that I like Guiness, but does it taste the same from a can?

Whoops. Important question not answered!
I find that it isnt that nice from a can. It just ends up a little more bitter than normal draught for some reason.
What is nice from the can though is Murphys Stout! I wouldnt drink it in a pub on draught, but from a can its quite palatable!!
