This thread is closed. See the current: Games NightThe wife and I were wondering about starting and hosting a "games" evening. We have a nice party basement that needs to be used more often and this is one of the things I do miss from back home. Between family and friends, we did this often and twas a blast. Childish maybe, but a lot of fun nonetheless!
The "games" could be anything, i.e.:
charades
poker
buy a card gut
canasta
rummy
risk
monopoly
trivial pursuit
movie/TV show bingo
siedler
scrabble
pictionary
tabu
hearts
spades
bridge (if someone could teach me)
and on and on...
Details to be worked out later, but the thought is to do this on a Friday or Saturday evening once a month (perhaps twice now and again). Early birds could hit up the Greek or Italian restaurants close by, order pizza or do a pot luck and/or grilling out.
There is also room for kids as we have a three year old and two child friendly puppy-doggies!
Interested?

my gf and I would be interested, we wouldn't play for money though. I'd be thinking more along the lines of trivial pursuit, phase 10, uno... but if you did it every month a few games an evening would be fun.
we'll see where this thread goes ;-p

This is not a couples only event.
At every beach reunion my family has, we have a spades tournament. Your partner gets drawn from a hat and you go until you lose. The winners keep playing and the losers party. Sometimes it is good to lose!
As for money, we usually play penny poker, although buy a card gut can get into the BIG money, say €1.50 or so.

I would LOVE this! Especially Trivial Pursuit. I have a 3 year old who would love a new play buddy as well. My husband HATES games, so I guess he wouldn't come, but sounds cool to me... PM me if a date comes up.
I could bring Scattergories and Cranium in English.
Cheers! Lisa

Ok, looks like a go on a games night considering so many "yes's" on a Sunday night. Seems a void does exist in this area. We could start it as early as next weekend as far as we are concerned and then make it a monthly event or semi-monthly event. We love playing games and just haven't done that for far too long.
I have the cards for Trivial Pursuit "Know it all" edition (xmas gift from my sister-don't ask

). Don't have the board though.
Of course, more than one game can be played at a time and then switch off as you like.
For those with kids, you can come earlier in the late afternoon and let the kiddies play (Ian usually goes to bed around 8, but not always). There is a playground across the street, we have a garden and we could get the neighbor's Au Pair to look after them once the "adult" games begin. They can all "camp out" when going to sleep. We have a nice selection of childrens videos and British TV (Cbeebies and such).
I would imagine the games starting around 8ish with any sort of dinner hour being between 6 and 7ish. Children playing together is of course anytime after 4ish when Ian gets up from his afternoon nap and fully wakes up. Prior to fully waking up, he is a little grump!

This is a great idea, I'd love to come along. It really does depend on the date, though.
Regarding Triv - it's a bit tricky to play with an international crowd, because the questions are always a bit country-biased.
I have played before with e.g. Canadians and Americans using my Brit set and they understandably do not have a clue about (e.g.) who played Hilda Ogden in the British soap Coronation Street... Which suited me fine, because that meant I always won

(just kidding)
Will you have different sets of questions for the different nationalities?
When were you planning on having the first evening? I would vote for the weekend of 28th/29th.

I certainly like the idea of a game night but I really suck at Trivial Pursuit so I don't find it much fun.
Is anybody besides me interested in playing Scrabble? Or other word games? I know a *lot* of word games (most with no boards or pieces required--just your voice or pencil and paper).

eurovol, you must have read my thoughts - of last Friday afternoon at about 5 p.m., to be precise. Was just thinking, wouldn't a nice game of Trivial Pursuit be just the ticket for one of those dull winter evenings...
yep, up for Trivial, up for Scrabble, and after a few drinks, up for Charades too. No male or underage appendages, just my little self.
a great idea, and thanks for suggesting it.

Saan, disturbing, but my gf might...she's german so you might be able to win, lol
As for trivial pursuit, I have an american 20th anniversary edition, all questions are from 1982-2002...it's less than a year old, so in great condition, only played it with the gf a couple times...actually it's hers, I bought it for her cause she was born in 1982, so she'd have no excuse that the questions are "before her time"...anyways, game on

I'd vote for Sat. 29th. I'm not a big Triv P. fan but it looks like they'll be enough people to have a few games going on.
I played this really really fun game at home. There's cards that have catagories on them. One person reads a topic, say movies would have a title to a movie. Everyone makes up what the movie is about then one person reads everyones and you vote for whih one is the true movie. Anyone remember the name of that game. It gets really fun especially with a couple drinks and creative people.
I love monopoly too if anyone wants to play.
kathie
Jan 17 2005, 6:37 pm
Winegirl - that sounds a bit like nobodys perfect, but in that game it's not just about films. There are questions about what words mean, why things happened etc and everyone makes up an answer and then has to guess which answer is the real one. You get a certain number of points if you guess right and a certain number of points if people fall for your answer. It's a board game, and you get to move on the number of points you win per go... We've played it in teams of two before, and you're right, after a few drinks it's hillarious... Don't have a copy though unfortunately and all the copies I could get hold of are in German...

@Kathie, yeah that sounds like the game. Movies was just an example. It had the other catagories too. Thought it had a different name but the game you described is def what I'm thinking of.

So, it looks like Sat. the 29th is the winner for this month. Actually, it is also better for us. Seems work has reared its ugly head for both the wife and I and we will be rather frazzled over the next week or so.
There is room enough to have several games going on at one time.
So, for Trivial Pursuit, we will obviously need various country editions and a board. The wife will probably not play TP unless there is a German edition on hand.
We have a Scrabble, Scotland Yard, Backgammon and more decks of cards than you can count.
For the first go around, we will probably just order out-Chinese or Thai.
Snacks: We will have some Chips and dips on hand. Other than that, it is bring what you want and BYOB. There is a Tenglemann next door for local purchasing.

Ok, the date is set and it will be the 29th. It is also now on the calendar of events.
PM me for directions and confirmation.
Also, we need to know what games, if any you will be bringing? If you are most interested in the Trivial Pursuit, then what edition you can bring and who has a board? BTW, how many can play that at one time? I have not played that since being in Germany and that is going on 8 years now.
If you have other games not mentioned but would perhaps like to play, then bring them too. It has been my experience that the side games tend to be very different than planned based on who shows up and what the mood is.
Ok, Who is coming and whatcha bringing?
Details:
Food-ordering out around 6ish (pizza, Chinese, Thai, Indian, alles möglich).
Social hour-around 7ish (that means non-eaters are welcome at this time)
Let the games begin-8ish
See you there.
PS: Those with young'uns PM for earlier times and activities.

It depends on how many you want to have on a team.
If I remember correctly, there are 6 "counters" so if you intend to play individually then only 6 can play...Otherwise the number is totally up to yourselves.

Ok, is the 29th (this coming Saturday) not a good night?
Who is in on the 29th and who who would be in on the 12th of February?
If there is enough interest, we will do both.
Games to be determined by what the people who show up want and have brought with them.
