Hello Everyone,
It is my pleasure to announce a new open mic (that's right, open mic) series jumping off in Berlin next week. It's called "new word order," and it's the brain child of Lissy Romanow and myself and it will take place at the lovely Mano Cafe on Skalitzerstr. in Xberg.
The idea behind the series is a open space for artists to come out and read poems, play music, do jokes, juggle, do a performance of some sort. It's five minutes to get up and do your thing. Democratization of space as dictated by who gets there first to sign up. Or something like that.
The show will feature a performer who will do a set after the open mic. We will do it the second Thursday of each month at the Mano, which makes next Thursday (Dec. 11), the first show of the series! Hurrah!
"But Mike, why in the world would you plan a show only a week in advance?"
That's a fine question. Urgency is fun! But also, we are so eager to get it running, we are willing, nay, obliged, to take the risk.
Of course, an open mic without readers isn't much of an open mic and a week isn't a huge amount of time to get the word out to the masses, so I am sending this out with my warmest regards to ask you to come on down, and pack a poem or two, bring your guitar/banjo/fiddle/ukelele, bring your juggling thingies, or monologue or whatevers you got and let's do this thing. And bring a couple of friends, too.
A good old fashioned open mic of cross-artistic proportions is just what this town needs, so let's get it rollin'...
Okay, without further ado:

skalitzerstr. 46a
21:00 (get there early to sign up! limited spots available)
11. dec. 2008
(and every second thurs. of the month)
(naturally, all languages welcome)
(aber natürlich, sprich wie du sprichst)
our featured performer will be the wonderfully engaging master of the f-stop:
MOON
his poems have one foot in the hip hop tradition, one foot in the old school spoken word scene, one foot in the new skool spoken word scene, one foot in a club someplace in Manchester, one foot in a dark room, and one foot on an u-bahn platform...
that's a lot of feet...each one crucial, to be sure...it's a treat to have Moon read, and an honor, as he doesn't get out from behind his camera to perform poems for anyone...must be all those games of pool I let him win last night...
Questions? Get at me...
See you at the open mic...
