I am looking for someone to get me going with my Linux system. My supplier is Alice but they do not support Linux. I have everything set up ready.
Timmeh
what is your flavour of linux?
brenda50
Um, sorry I will have to get back on that one. If you name a few I might recognise it. Thanks
Timmeh
Ubuntu, Fedora, PCLinuxOS, Debian, Mint, Gentoo, to name but a few of the ten gazillion
brenda50
I think it is PCLinuxOS
Timmeh
Are you using the Siemens SL2-141-l WLAN router?
xargon
Switch to the latest Ubuntu. They have fantastic wireless network support.
Timmeh
I'd agree with that. I've been struggling to get a PCLinuxOS machine hooked up via WLAN with the above modem for a while now, but the Ubuntu 8.10 hook up was a piece of piss.
brenda50
If that is what Alice sent me then yes. Sorry I am not at home.
brenda50
Sorry no it is not a wireless router
Timmeh
Righto:
Go to PCLinux Control Centre > Setup new connection > DSL > Select Germany from the list > Select Alice from the list > enter in username & pass word > click finish.

Should be all...if I remember correctly.
brenda50
OK thanks I will give it a go when I get home but am bound to make a mess of it

BTW, if anyone wants to try a Linux install on a PC, Wubi is a new option.

All the files are put in a single (big) 5+ GB file, so you can uninstall from Windows easily if needed. No need to partition your hard drive!

You lose some performance, but it is a nice safe way to try out Linux and most people have plenty of HD space.

Yes I have PCLinuxOS and I did all the things you said until I got to a password request. The password that Alice have given me has an umlaut and I have an English keyboard. What can I do?
Timmeh
I assume your user name is your phone number?? If so, the password isn't really important, you can just use 12345
