what if one just might want to *try* haggis, but not commit to a full portion? have always wanted a taste.

and that link to the map for tonight doesn't work for me. not that I can't figure it out, just map links rarely work.
Katrina
I just don't want to be left with 15kg of the stuff (which wouldn't be a bad thing per se but my freezer is mainly used for vodka) so this is why there is a sign-up page. Sign-up and say you'd like a "happy meal" portion wink.gif
tartan
Haggis, never touched the stuff. I hear it is fab though, where does it originate from?
C
The Arc
we've heard that the tradition on Burn's Night is for men in kilts to carry out the haggis behind a man playing bagpipes, then toast it with whisky, eat it and recite Robert Burns. Katrina is kindly providing the haggis, we can sort out the whisky but who is going to turn up in their kilt, play the old Dudelsack for us and make poetry?

Volunteers from the Scottish community please??
Schotte
Generally the chef brings the haggis in.

Someone addresses it with:

"Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain o the puddin'-race!
"
etc etc with the rest of the address bit.

"Some hae meat and canna eat, And some wad eat that want it; But we hae meat and we can eat, And sae the Lord be thankit." plus lots of whisky is all you really need though.

(I learnt this through the Christmas 'Oor Wullie' annuals, what an institution smile.gif )
Squirrel
you sound like you might own a kilt! let's have some kilts for the ladies boys please!
Schotte
Had I not been coming to Munich this year I would have got a kilt and outfit for my 21st, instead I got ski gear!!!

Actually I looked about last week for a cheap one for parties and the like but all a bit pricey for me at the moment. sad.gif
Topsy
what kind of haggis is it? maybe this is a stupid question, if so - sorry.
are there different kinds of haggis? I know that you have veggie and non-veggie, but I mean other than that.
Sorry, I know I'm not being very coherent today, I'm hoping you know what I mean anyway... rolleyes.gif
Jeeves
I'm just as ignorant on the haggis front, but how can you have a veggie haggis? blink.gif
Schotte
@ The Arc

"we can sort out the whisky"

Plenty of MacAllan please. ph34r.gif

@ Katrina

Do you know roughly how much it will cost for a portion of the haggis? Are you getting it shipped over or something?!
triple choc
Sleepless in Munich's thread on the whiskey festival got me wondering whether anyone's planning an evening laced with that lovely stuff on Burns Night, even though it falls (annoyingly enough) on a Tuesday? Anyone up for delicious, peaty, smoky whiskey, then?

I thought The Arc was doing something
UpQuark
Forgive my ignorance, but what is Burns night?
Toast
it's a time to celebrate nuclear power. wink.gif
UpQuark
Eeeeexcellent (said while tenting his fingers)
Schotte
I'm getting f***ing confused with these Burn's night threads. smile.gif
Gen
Tsk tsk. Takes an American to tell you it's Rabbie Burns, not Burn -- will ask Editor Bob to change all these spellings to Burns Night, not Burn's Night

I'll come too btw. Mini portions of both.
Schotte
Hanging my head in shame... happy.gif

Was at his house a few years ago in Ayrshire, interesting if you like that sort of thing. House seems to be in tact after all these years.
Katrina
Hi,
the end pricing hasn't been worked out yet but will be in line with The Arc prices.
Topsy, you can get vegetarian haggis (not something for the purists but without the meat but with the same seasonings). There are also certain variations and like Wurst in Germany, each region tends to season slightly differently. White pepper has to be in there though.
So why am I involved?
Well my family actually comes from Dumfries, Dumfries and Galloway, South-West Scotland where Burns lived and died.
I'll be doing the order early next week and yes it will be coming from Scotland. My mum is going to post my kilt (Kerr tartan - my mother's side is Kerr).
It would be good if someone could pipe the haggis in and someone to do the address would be an idea too.
Cheers!
Katrina

Ingredients: Oatmeal, water, vegetable margarine, kidney beans, lentils, nuts (peanuts, almonds, walnuts), carrots, turnip, onions, mushrooms, salt, pepper, spices.

mellelisa
well if someone has a spare set of pipes I could pipe it in? Mine have not been shipped over here yet.
The Arc
with regard to whisky we plan to have a fair few on offer, not as many as the whisky festival obviously but a cheap, medium-priced and a couple of more expensive alternatives for the real connoisseur
tartan
I can do the toast if Scotsman required, but I dinna have a kilt; actually grew out of my kilt a number of years ago.
Count me in for Haggis.

Tartan
The Arc
that would be great, we definitely need a Scotsman for it
triple choc
@the Arc

so, will there be some fix price per head for that evening? Don't care much for Haggis, but a special whiskey menu would be of considerable interest.
The Arc
We're looking at having a range on offer, some people will be prepared to splash out more on an expensive whisky than others, we'll go from cheap through medium to a few expensive ones.
any preferences out there?
triple choc
oh, Lagavulin wub.gif and Lagavulin-clones... if that's not the elixir of life, youth, and other things that shall remain unnamed, I don't know what is...
Schotte
"any preferences out there? "

yee know too much.
scots geeza
@ The Arc - Talisker whisky should be waiting in the bar staffs hands when i walk into the pub. please...pretty please...with sugar on top and a wee cherry too.

@ Katrina - u getting a proper haggis in a real sheeps stomach? r u getting a reasonably spicy one as the unspiced ones are , for want of a better word, shite. what is this with that orginal haggis containing beef!? i take it there will be plenty o' neeps an' tatties doing the roonds an a?

heres some true scots poetry, the man burns himself:

hoots mon theres a moose loose aboot this hoos!! *ahem* may have made an error in attributing that to the late great scots poet believe it to be a tv ad oops. still good tho
Katrina
Well, it will be MacSweens because I like MacSweens and you can get them online. I was going to get one Chieftain for the piping in and then use their catering packs as otherwise it gets to be extremely expensive.
Neeps (Steckrüben) could be a problem but I'm on the case. smile.gif
Topsy
quick question - what time will the dinner start?
i.e. what time will the haggis get piped in?
Hazza
We'll sort timings and prices out in the next few days and let you know here...
rubber duck
@katrina – for the neeps (Steckrüben) ask the farmer ladys ( these with the removable market stands, not the ones with the permanent little houses) on the right side of the Viktualienmarkt (near the Fleischbank) they might have them. Steckrüben are not that popular in the south of germany, but in the eastern part and there are a typical winter vegetable. Good hunt.
Katrina
Thanks RD! See you tomorrow! smile.gif
Showem
Okay, I'd like to sign up, but I'd like to have a better idea of what I'm signing up for.

Cost?
What does that include?
From when to when? I assume it's fairly open-end, but I don't want to be sitting down to eat at 10:30pm.

Please provide more details. Pretty please.
Showem
And I added it to the Calendar.
Katrina
Hi
Cost will be max. 10€ (we're still working it out) and will include haggis (real or vegetarian wink.gif ), mashed potatoes (tatties) and mashed turnip (neeps). The haggis is being ordered from the UK hence the cost (but it will be in line with The Arc prices).
The haggis will be piped (probably via CD/MP3 unfortunately) in and have the ceremonial bit (see here) at about 8:30pm.
That enough info? More news as we have it!
Katrina
PS you still have jet lag I see wink.gif
Squirrel
i've read the format, are we going to do the male/female slanging match as well! sounds fun!
Hazza
OK - after looking at the costs, we've decided to charge €7.50 for the haggis meal. This will also include a shot of whiskey.

We'll have bagpipe music and the poem read. As we don't know any bagpipe players, we will probably have to play a cd. However, if there are any bagpipe players on TT, or if you know anyone who would like to perform the honours, then please get in touch. There's a free haggis meal for the bagpipe player!!

We won't do the slanging match as it will cause everything to drag on for too long

The ceremony will kick off at around 8pm.
scots geeza
Sorry to say that I wont be able to make Burns night sad.gif Was really looking forward to the craic and finally meeting many from TT but I am heading back to Scotland for 2 weeks on the wednesday and with the flight early morning I cant sqeeze it in. mad.gif

Im even missing fasching - i get back on the 8th. Instead of booking the cheapest I think i booked the most stupid dates i could find. dry.gif
colin stewart
Where is this taking place?

Would like to come...
Eric the Hamster
Its on at the Arc
Katrina
The haggis is now ordered (but there will be more than plenty). Did try to get Irn Bru but alas it was not to be had.
Sorry to hear that scots geeza sad.gif but you can have a haggis supper anyway so it isn't all bad!
Arwen
i'm really looking forward to this! sounds really great! smile.gif

@katrina, thanks for organizing and ordering the stuff!!
