YES!!! I LOVE CAKE!!!
I'm in, have all their albums. Legal even. They're the only group I've seen that could get the Germans to dance. Well mosh really. Up so close. Must get over to that catchphrases thread, shame you can't post a bass line... Going the distance bass line whew. Instant Ohrwurm.

tickets are bought! no worries at all. they have lots of tickets left. we don't have seats, just entry, so anyone can still come along, and we should probably make a plan (later) to get there before the good elbow room is gone.

hey all! looks like they'll open the doors at 8 and start the show at 9. want to meet up just so we can all go in together, or do you want to meet up for a drink beforehand?
drink beforehand. Muffathalle's huge and we won't be able to hear each other talk once we get there, and it's too cold to meet up outside. Cafe Stör in the Müllersches Volksbad? (May be called L-Bistro or something by now)
quarblotz
Feb 8 2005, 3:01 am
i just heard that Cafe Stör is closed for renovation now, and have had instead been recommended to the Music Cafe Jam just up the street -- if you pass the lichtspiele and head up the hill (past that terrible "good stuff" shop) it's just there in that next block, before the intersection of innere wiener str and rosenheimer str.
there's also a cool little keller restaurant/bar place right by the lichtspiele but i can't remember its name... melodie, or something? i'll bike by tomorrow to check it out.
if we meet at 7 is that enough time? any other suggestions for a place?
quarblotz
Feb 8 2005, 4:36 pm
i rode by today and the music-cafe-jam looks like a good place. reasonable prices, and it's right smack across the street from the MH. i'll be there no later than 7. and the rest of you...?

Cake plays Thursday night at Mufathalle, and can't buy tickets on website. Can you buy scalped tickets? Any formalities or legal implications to know about?

I'm not sure about scalped tickets but I get the impression that there is an extra one floating around this board. I'll be in Austin in 2 weeks, BTW. Can't wait. Greatest. City. Ever.

got to admit I'm jealous...I've only been here three weeks, on a three year assignment, but I really miss the live music scene. Don't know if you need it, but let me know if you need any suggestions...I'm always glad to help.

An excellent concert. I had never seen or heard the band before last night (apart from the one song) and I was mightily impressed.
Many thanks to quarblotz for getting the tickets and to Hazza for the "backstage" party...
4 hours sleep was not enough though... My desk is looking mighty inviting as a pillow at the moment. Have to drive to bloody Allgäu in an hour. Coffee... more coffee...

Sorry I did not meet up with you all. But I was at the concert and really enjoyed the set. I actually enjoyed the banter between the lead singer and the drunks in the front. But I must say that the opening band was one of the worst things I ever heard. Tuba and Drums, sounds like they smoked too much when they came up with that idea. This was the first band, where I knew my friends' garaga bands are much better.
But Cake was great!!!

From the lead singer to the drunks in front, "you're falling down, you're vomiting all over each other. Are you Americans?"
Huge laugh from the crowd.
Friend of mine noticed that many Germans were singing "SheepS go to heaven, goats go to hell!" Hilarious.
Cosmic Shame
Feb 11 2005, 11:27 am
I was right up front and I think some of the drunks actually were Americans! The lead singer was pretty pissed at them. For a second I thought he was going to jump into the crowd and take one of them on.
Great show none the less.

I was wondering if some of that ribbing was maybe a little less than good-natured, as well. I was not on any happy-making substances that would have made me blow it off and assume he was just kidding. He didn't seem to be smiling at the time. I was a bit farther back, though, so maybe he was - it was hard to see anything of his face besides his beard because of that baseball hat.
I also liked the bit about "do I come to your office, stand over your desk, and tell you how to do your job? I'm trying to concentrate here!" Your vote? Kidding or not?
It was my first Cake concert and I liked it overall, but was really hoping that we'd hear "Sad Songs & Waltzes." Went away disappointed on that score, though admittedly it's not much of a party song.

I took it as, he was not kidding, but good natured as he has to deal with hecklers in the past. I was a bit surprised how that one person jumped on stage and started screaming, shut the fuck...up. He was there for quite a while in the singers face before the man from stage left ran out and pushed him forcefully to the ground.
my take: he was serious, but good natured
Hazza
Feb 11 2005, 12:30 pm
I was the one who gave the bloke a leg up onto the stage.
Simply because he was a complete pain in the arse and I hoped it would get him chucked out. Later on I had a bit of a push and shove with him. He almost fell over, which is when the singer asked us if we were American...
That guy was one of the most annoying fuckers I've ever seen at a concert - I can't have been the only one who thought so either, because he was lifted up and crowd surfed out of there soon after, against his will...
Concert itself was great.

I was up in the front too with Cosmic Shame and Metro 75. You may have heard me yell out
"I want a piece of Cake"! At which point I rendered Jon McCrea and the rest of the band speechless!
The best was at the end when we met Vincent on our way out and then Jon!
