I know Irish to about the same level as I know German & French. Which is not great but enough to get by when necessary.

Why is it your average european can speak four laguages.. but sad little americans like my self can barely get through english...

PC answer is, em, probably because your country is quite big and most people within a couple hundred mile radius speak something approximating English and so there's no compunction to learn something else.

I'm an American, but there is an exception to every rule.
I'm a trilingual American, but I grew up partly in Europe and used to live in Munich.
One thing though - I should have known more Bavarian dialect; I speak standard German and am usually taken for a native speaker - but in the years I lived in Munich, I should have learned Bavarian.
There was no school to teach me, but now, there is the internet...

Like most styles though, it has its fringe phase, when only a small minority of people do it and everyones shocked, then its mainstream phase, where everyone does it and it becomes boring, and the fringers stop doing it.
