Hello. My husband and I are moving to Baumholder (Job start date of Jan 2, 2009). I have to be within 30 minutes of Baumholder but we would like to live inbetween Baumholder and Kaiserslaturn. This would give my husband a choice of working at either place. Any suggestions?

Is there anyone out there in the Baumholder area?

Try Idar-Oberstein. Alternatively, look at Lauterecken, Sien or Birkenfeld.

Kusel is right between Baumholder and Kaiserslautern, I used to live out there and liked it, it's a decent sized town with all amenities and a train station. Idar Oberstein is closer to Baumholder.

Thank you so much for the suggestions. My husband had been surfing and was looking at Kusel. He was also wandering about if Kusel had a train and you guys answered both those questions. I really appreciate the input. I'll have to check out the other places mentioned in the post. Once again, thanks for your responses. Any additional information anyone wants to add about Kusel would be great!

Where did you end up at? If you want to visit one of the nicest towns in the area, go spend a day in Idar Oberstein. I was in the Army at Baumholder, and after seeing how nice Idar Oberstein was, I moved there, and LOVED it.

Hi there, we're heading to Baumholder too in January. Moving with three kids (ages 7, 9 ,11) and a basset hound in tow. We're really stoked to head out there. I lived in Munich for six months while working at ESO two years ago and absolutely LOVED it. Any input on the area would be helpful. The hubby would like to live 30 minutes within Baumholder and I'm looking for a small quaint village like I lived in at Garching. Mostly German, few Americans, enough to let our family get fully immersed in the culture. I do have another question about schools for kids. Does anyone know if the post provides transportation to and from school if we decide to live off post? Would love to have the kids go to a German school, but I think that would be too much of a shock for them. LOL. Well, like I said, any input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Your children can go to school on post if there is space available(I am assuming you are not AD), living 30 minutes out might put you out of bus range though, it depends on the school boundaries. You could call the school and ask. I don't know anyone, except those with German moms, who have sent their kids to German schools, but I can tell you that if that is the route you choose the schools are radically different, at least in Bavaria, school lets out at different times on different days and here I think the latest is 1pm.

Thanks for the reply, yeah, I figured it would be best to go to the school on post. I will give them a call and find out. Thanks again. Any suggestions on a nice village to live in around that area?
