Hi everyone,
I'm moving to Germany for a new job with a company who have offices in central Hamburg, Rendeburg and Bremerhaven. I've been given the choice of where to be based, as I will have to travel between the offices anyway. The companies preference is that I'm in Rehdsburg though. However, looking on here there seems to be no life for English speakers, whereas Hamburg has a very active community (but probably a 1hr daily commute...)
The other factor is that I am into sailing, so clearly Kiel gas big appeal.
Does anyone have any tips on the reasons to live in any of these locations..?
My other reason for posting is to see who responds, as it looks pretty quiet in here!! I'm a late 20's single guy... Anyone there??

I presume you mean Rendsburg?
Bremerhaven and Rendsburg both are very high on my list of places not to live.
But if you have to commute to all three places then take Hamburg in the middle and go out from there.
No matter what city you choose DONT move to Bremerhaven, it's the most rundown place I know up north and outranks every other city in crap.

I replied to your other thread of driving times from Hamburg to Rendsburg and would also like to back up what the Mapledude has said based on knowing someone who had to work in Rendsburg for two months. He is German and was very glad to get away from Rendsburg and return to Hamburg. I would definitely contemplate living somewhere in NW Hamburg and commuting, suggested places to live near the A7 autobahn - Niendorf, Schnelsen, maybe even Quickborn which is north of Hamburg just right next to the A7 with good transport links into Hamburg. Niendorf, followed by Schenlsen would be my personal preference if I was young and single and wanted compromise between being in Hamburg and doing the commute to Rendsburg by car. Stellingen and Eidelstedt are also options but not as nice areas as the others.

Tuppenceworth,
What can I say - you've given me two really great posts. I'm pretty convinced now... Thanks so much for the help, hopefully catch up for real when i'm in Hamburg!

If you haven't made your mind up yet:
there's quite a few English speakers in Kiel, but of course a lot more in Hamburg.
I have friends who lived in Rendsburg, it's a nice litte town, enough to do, but not exactly many English speakers. We once went to see an Irish folk band in a pub in R. - they were Germans...
Conc. areas near the A7 in Hamburg: I grew up in Schnelsen, went to school in Eidelstedt and now live in Stellingen, also know my way around Niendorf quite well.
There are very nice areas in Schnelsen, but there are also not nice ones, incl. a ghetto where 80% of the inhabitants are jobless and I wouldn't leave my car there over night.
Same in some areas in Eidelstedt, and I'm sure there's the odd area like this in Stellingen. So in all these areas it depends WHERE you are moving.
Having lived in Schnelsen for many years, the things that annoyed me were definitely public transport (bus or A1, forget about it!!!) and distance to the city. If you don't mind to drive two junctions further on the A7 (we are talking about approx. 6-8 km), I'd recommend Stellingen for a twentysomething single guy. If you look at apartments around the Tierpark (we live there and it is very nice, quiet streets, but still close to A7, short distance to U2 and relatively close to S3) that would probably be a good idea, plus there's quite a few English speakers around, in Stellingen and in the close by Eimsbüttel area.
Personally, I would only move back to Schnelsen if I had kids. As we don't have kids and like to go out a lot in the evening, Stellingen is the much better choice for us. We take abt. 30-35 mins. to city centre with public transport, 12-15 mins. by car (if there's no jam). Taxi from city centre costs abt. 17-18 euros, to Schnelsen it is much more.
Good luck looking for an apartment - I recommend the new apartment-houses in Hagenbeckstraße, close to Hagenbecksallee, afaik there are still some vacancies (on googlemaps satellite, it's still a building site, but the houses are finished now). There's another huge block of new(ish) apartments at Emil Andresen Straße.
