Fasching 2005 in Munich

Helau! Alaaf!!

Hiya
well it is nearly that time again - Fasching (Karneval) time!
So with Fasching coming so early this year (7th & 8th February), it is worth having a look at what is available.
Some at the curry night had a look at my Kaufhof Faschings outfit catalogue (there was a vote about which outfit was the best - Inflateable Woman must buy the Elvis outfit, it would be criminal not to) and ALDI currently has Faschings costumes for 6,99€, wigs for 2,99€, fancy dress make-up for 4,99€ and colour/glitter hairsprays for 1,99€. The kids outfits and wigs are really good in there, so even if you don't do Fasching, it is worth buying them and keeping for dressing up or Halloween.
The nurse outfit at Kaufhof looked a bit more like one for home-use only though ha ha ha *cough*
As for events, well, I've seen that the Ratskeller on Marienplatz will be doing a Altweiberfasching (on Mad Woman Thursday - when the ladies take control and cut men's ties off) Schlager Special with 5€ entry, lots of music (music like you get at the Oktoberfest), costumes and really good wines. So I quite fancy this.
I also plan to go to the Viktualienmarkt on the Tuesday - same procedure as last year, eh pootle? wink.gif
Standing about, singing loudly, clutching a bottle of prosecco is the only way to spend Fasching in Munich frankly biggrin.gif
Helau and Alaaf!

Oooh, I love Fasching. Not in Munich but over the way in Elzach.

Keydeck, where is Elzach? by the looks of the costumes it could be Schwäbisch or Allemanisch?
Topsy
I wouldn't take a kid there, though, would you?
They'd have nightmares with all those scary folk everywhere.
Flippin scary as hell!! ohmy.gif
Jeeves
Looks like the Hexensprung. Defo looks Allemanic. And if so then I prefer Fasching over there too.

@Topsy The witches run into the crowds and make non-friendly noises at the kids. And just to compensate they hand out goodies. The kids love it.
Keydeck
Yeah kids love it. Some take part as you can see on my page and others run in front of the participants. The smallest ones just look on. After the parades there's big celebrations with everyone in fancy dress. It's a much bigger thing than in Munich.

Elzach is in the Schwarzwald region.

I've been there twice now. Here's another link from my previous visit.
Katrina
I love the little baby monster in that piccy Keydeck!
I've never been to Köln for Fasching but have been in Mainz which has to be seen to be believed. It is like St Patricks' Day in NYC.
This SWR guid to Fasching/Karneval in Baden-Wüttemberg and Rheinland-Pfalz gives good information about the big events. I was also at Rottweil one year and that is just beautiful.
Jeeves
Or not far from Rottweil is Rottenburg am Neckar. Fasching with the whole works. Excellent time.
Munich1107
Hey guys, lets not talk about Elzach.
Pls pass on some ino about Munich happenings on that day.
Me, I am new to Munich & would love to know more about its happening things and places
Jeeves
Fair enough.
THE place to be is, as Katrina mentioned, Viktualienmarkt on Tuesday morning. One large open-air party.
The Tuesday is not officially a public holiday but a lot of people take it anyway.
Otherwise, apart from the procession (on the Sunday in Munich I think) it's mainly evening events.
Owain Glyndwr
the whole point is, though, nothing really goes on in Munich over Fasching (compared to other areas). The Fasching "Hochburgen" are really the Alb & Schwarzwald in Baden-Würtenburg and Niederrhein (Mainz and Cologne especially).
Kebab Meister
How long does Fasching last for? Just 7th & 8th February? I'm in the UK 7th - 10th sad.gif
Owain Glyndwr
"Fasching" lasts from 11:11am on the 11 November until Faschnacht.
Jeeves
Technically yes, but in the sense that KM means (i.e. when are the parties) then it's from the Thursday before (Katrina's Mad Woman day), i.e. 6 days in total.
Kebab Meister
@Jeeves, Thank you!

So... just to confirm, 3rd to 8th February? Do most people just celebrate the climax, i.e. 7th & 8th Feb, which are the dates Katrina mentioned?
Yeti
I always celebrate a climax biggrin.gif
Kebab Meister
@ Yeti

Especially if they're few and far between!
Yeti
@KM

Ye takes what you can get, beggars can't be choosers etc etc

Of course you know it's gone too far when you don't know what it is anymore biggrin.gif

munich has tried to establish more of a fasching tradition over the years i've been here (since 91), but its still really limited to fasching tuesday daytime street party (on 8th feb) - although there are stalls and pints in the area around Marienplatz over the whole weekend. there are also some good parties around in the week or two before and you will see people in fancy dress a lot as the tuesday gets near. the thursday thing is not taken that seriously here but check before you were your favourate tie to work, just in case. there is a tradition of the women ganging up on the men and cutting their ties in half, but its not observed here so much as it is up north (mainz, cologne, düsseldorf for example).

the olly fasching party in the student union at olympic village used to be really good but not been for a good few years. if you are going to an organised party around that time, make sure it is fasching-oriented before turning up in fancy dress. couple of years ago a load of us went to a uni party dressed as kangaroos, lions and raccoons but we were the only people dressed up in the place sad.gif

one more thing on the tuesday party, it is usually incredibly crowded, it is not suitable for young kids or pets (sorry henry), take them down to have a look round on the sunday or the monday.
cinzia
latecomer, isn't there usually an organized party for kids at Marienplatz on Tuesday? With the Viktualienmarkt reserved for the big radio broadcast, dance of the market ladies, and this year the Schaefflertanz. All the best drunks will be in the Viktualienmarkt. Three years ago was a gorgeous day, and I remember cross-dressing men hanging in the trees (they really ripped up their nylons getting up there, though.)

I've been to Cologne for Carnival as well; it's an absolute madhouse on the last weekend, from Thursday till Tuesday, with parades every day. I seriously doubt anyone in Cologne works in all that time, except in the restaurants, etc. If you go, there is no need to bring any clothes other than costumes, except whatever you travel in. It puts Munich's Fasching to shame. Here's a photo I took at about noon on Carnival Sunday (none of these people is me!)

Barnafan
The carnival in Cologne is much bigger than in Munich, for sure. Munich used to have a fasching parade, but they dropped it because of the first gulf war. As nobody complained they just stopped it altogether. laugh.gif

But there is hope as there are many immigrants from Cologne in Munich. They founded a carnival club KMKV which has quite decent parties. The carnival party just took place on january 14th, but there is another on on 25th.

Take a look here
http://www.kmkv.de
or
http://www.koelnerabend.de

During the important part of carnival (this year from 3.2. to 9.2.) most of the members of KMKV will be in Cologne, though biggrin.gif

If anyone has any questions regarding carnival, just feel free to contact me.

they don't. Virtually all companies and schools are shut.

If you ever go to Köln for the Karnival stay at the Pension/Hotel:

Hotel Schwan
Dürener Straße 235
D - 50931 Köln (Cologne)
Phone: +49 221 4024 17
Fax: +49 221 4009 990

It's directly above the most popular Fasching bar in Köln...by far. You can stumble into bed really easily!!!
Owain Glyndwr
who needs a bed during Carnival! you just stumble into someone elses!
canuck
@OG: That's true too. A few nights I didn't even use the bed. I was by/in the toilet the entire night...Too much Kölsch!!
Arwen
i love the "schwäbisch-alemannische fasnet". grew up in one of the major towns (rottenburg am neckar). hope i'll be able to go again this year! it's always been great fun tongue.gif

never been at the kölner carneval, heard it's great. not really my thing i think, guess i'm just not used to it!

Just wondered ... what is the most popular Fasching bar in Köln ???
canuck
Hmmm...It's called the Schwan. It was totally packed everytime I was there. If you come after say 9pm, you have no chance of getting in.
grtho
Mmmmmm...is there maybe a TT Fasching night out?

Kinky Devil or "Schwester Unglaublich" the nun, I can't decide what to wear! biggrin.gif
Katrina
I want to do "mad woman Thursday" starting at the after work Schlagerparty in the Weinkeller at Rathaus. Twisted Bavarian has male strippers later but I like the idea of Schlager.
On Tues I will be at Viktulalienmarkt (as procedure as usual).
Grtho, for kinky devil, you need no costume you cheapskate! I'm still thinking about my outfit...
