Some of you may know Chaco. He is a very friendly light-brown or fawn Dobermann, about 1 year old. We went away on vacation over New Year's and a vet/kennel in Munich was watching him. They took him out for a walk Friday late afternoon and he was frightened by some fireworks and ran away from the caretaker. He has been missing ever since. The vet is located in Westend near the Westend str. U-bahn. He was last seen in that area off of Ludwig-Richter str. If you or anyone else has seen him, please call 0160-788-3056 or 0160-788-3042. We miss him!!
Below is his picture. Please send a note if that is easier. Any information would be helpful.
Thank you,

Several years ago a friend of ours had two dogs that they left with someone. They had a similar story about one running away. We found out later that the guy sold one of the pups for cash and made the whole story up. The police didn't do a thing as there was no proof, just the word of someone that wanted to remain anonymous.
Seriously question the kennel and the caretaker!

Have you contacted the Tierheim in Riem in case he has been handed in?

Eurovol!! Not helpful. At least not at this moment.
I hope you find him. I will keep a lookout for him.
Well supposedly the vet/kennel has done that and he hasn't shown up. I'm feeling now w/ eurovol's response, I should take everything into my own hands. Thank you!

I hope you find him. If you haven't already done so then you could paste posters of him in the pet shops, supermarkets etc. in the area. I am sure you can also register him as missing with the Tierheim in Riem. Good luck.
I know this response might sound American, but can't you sue the caretaker if the dog is never found?? I'd at least ask the caretaker about Haftpflichtversicherung and whether or not he/she has it!
As a dog lover, my heart goes out to you and I hope you find him!

my heart bleeds for you. i would be going out of my mind. i think you ought to go the posting of photographs route as suggested elsewhere. it might jog someone's memory. i would definitely be taking the entire matter into my own hands. no one cares or loves that dog as much as you do.
as far as suing, i'm not sure it's such a good idea. right now, you want your sweet dog back and litigation (even in the future) is not going to change anything. the insurance issue might a good avenue to pursue in the worst possible scenario. it sounds like an accident, but i am curious - was your dog off leash at the time? i am not crazy about having a dog off leash in the city. perhaps it is because i have a dog who will dart across the street to greet any other dog he sees, but still, it seems like a recipe for disaster.
please let us know the outcome.

Yes, please keep us posted. One more thought. Call the local radio stations - they announce missing pets and all German-speaking Munich drivers have these stations (Energy, Charivari, Arabella) on. If you need any help with speaking German feel free to pm me. You can also put an ad in the local papers Hallo, Münchner Wochenblatt etc. which are delivered free to nearly every household and lots of Germans thumb through them.
(We lost a cat a few years ago and as a result of the radio announcement a strange woman called me. She was a cat-lover and told me to walk around everywhere calling him - we actually found him miaowing at the bottom of the underground garage. Again good luck.)

I would be out of my mind as well, as those who know me and the mini-pup well know. thank god he just about fits in my pocket.
I would follow all of the above suggestions, twice even. Fortunately, in my experience, the Germans love their animals and crime/stealing in Munich is lower than anywhere else I've lived. I think your odds are good that someone has taken him in and is trying to find you.
The very best of luck at finding that person.
Yes, I'm hoping the Germans are honest as well. I guess I would have thought whoever had him would have turned him in by now. The kennel guy says he has a call into the "pound" as we say in America and they will be calling him when he comes in. I'm not trusting this guy right now. He said that he had called the radio stations and they refused to announce the missing dog. From what I'm reading here, the radio stations do that. I don't speak any German so I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed and helpless. Does anyone have the phone number to the Tierheim in Riem?
I posted pictures of him in the area where he was last seen all day yesterday and the night before. I'm going to try and contact the papers as well. Good idea!
Yes, as an American, my first thoughts are he is totally liable for everything that happens to Chaco.
Thank you everyone for your kind words.

Jane,
He was on leash at the time. The guy said Chaco panicked when he heard the fireworks and he started to run and the leash slipped off the guy's hand. So, he was supposedly running down the street with a leash on. It just seems he couldn't get too far, that someone would realize he was away from his owner if someone wasn't far behind him as he was running. Ok, I'm going out to post some more flyers.
Thank you again.

The guy walking the dog sounds like he needs a right kicking - what a bloody idiot! Sure its an accident but jeez! these people usually take good money for supposedly taking care of the pets. Having missing pets is horrible

have you put up pics at local vets? And possibly on lamp posts in the area.

Hi Kym,
I hope you find him soon! Don't give up, he'll be around.
I was going to suggest as well, definately go for the local papers, especially the smaller free ones as well as bigger issues. You won't need much German for this, I'm sure someone could help you write the ad, and if you put a photo of him in there someone will spot it.
My cat went missing before I left NZ and we tried evvverything trying to find him - in the end he was miles away from where I was putting up flyers and door knocking - someone saw his photo in the local free paper and called us. He was just mooching around at some old ladies house as well!
Good luck! I'm sure it's only a matter of time before he's home again!
i know. i'm so pissed at him right now. 20 euro a day. come on. he should know better than to take out a dog at sundown as all the fireworks in munich are going off. i will not recommend this guy.
yes, i've been putting up flyers on lamp posts and cigarette machines, etc. anywhere i can find a good place to hang the flyer. going to vets and pet stores is another idea. my only transportation right now is the train so getting this done is going to take some time i'm afraid. i appreciate all of the good ideas.

I would have thought the fact it has a lead on might make people more aware that it is a lost dog. Hopefully

I'd start talking to a lawyer... If there were so many Fireworks going off the the guy shoul not have taken the dog out on the town, but should have kept'em on a lead in a fenced in area.
AND should have had a better grip on the lead...

All you people keep your fingers crossed, there is an information about a male, brownish Dobermann found in Laim area, hopefully it is Chaco. He is in private care and reported to the munich shelter as a found dog.
Kym has this information already and is working on it.
Kym, if u need further help, feel free to PM me.

Please PM me (or post for every one to see)the name of this 'dog-care' person. He sounds completely irresponsible and I want to make sure this is not the same person taking care of my friend's beautiful Golden Retriever right now while she is in the States working.
Also, I'm hoping that it's the right dog!! Sounds like it might be!!
ok, i called the tierhiem and there was some miscommunication. the guy that supposedly has him in his private care is actually the man/kennel i had given him to. he had reported chaco's missing to the tierhiem and he is the one who lives in laim...i figured it out by the last name and location i was given by rubber duck. therefore, chaco is still missing.

Ok, some animal psychology here. If he is still running free, he will be looking for food and water. He will rummage around in the early morning hours for the food near restaurants when no one else is around. He will also look for a source of water and will not leave to far from it until he knows the territory. If I were you, I would get out very early in the morning, say 3:30-4ish and walk the streets in the area calling his name. I feel so bad for you, I wish that I could help more.
this is a good suggestion. i just feel munich is so big and i have no idea where he has run to. but, like you said, he would be near water. so i may get out the map and look for a water source in that area.
i can tell you this...i have been throughout town today and i have not seen one missing dog sign. only 2 missing cat signs. this is amazing. either there are no missing dogs in all of munich or people don't post this sort of thing.
and...i'm seriously thinking of taking some legal action with this person. i am in total agreement that someone who is in this business and takes a dog out when there are fireworks everywhere should be held responsible for such idiotic actions. if anyone has further suggestions in this area, that would be great. i just worry about others that may suffer from a similar situation.
i also forgot to mention that arabella radio will be announcing chaco's missing tomorrow morning at either 10am or 10:10am. i believe the station number is 100.8.

Firstly, I'm sorry to hear about your dog.
My Dog went missing on Sunday night from outside Günther Murphy's. I searched the Englischer Garten till 3am and started again at 9am on Monday. I put up almost 200 posters with a big reward promised for any info.
By monday night I was really starting to think the worst. At about 6pm I got a call from a girl who has seen my flyers, she had not seen my dog but had recently got her dog back after almost 52 hours. (I had seen her dogs posters) He was found 9km away! He was also spooked by fireworks. But she got him back and he was fine. Anyway this gave me new hope and I thought I'd better expand my search area. I was searching when I got a call from the ploice, they had him! He had been found at the Olympia Zentrum on Sunday night. He was fine.
Don't loose faith, dogs are much hardier then we think! Also I think most Müncheners are dog lovers and the horror stories are very rare.
BTW my dog had no ID on him.
Fingers Crossed
Hope you get him back soon

Hi,
Just another suggestion I don't think has been mentioned yet... If you're not sure quite where to start or which way he's gone - it's always an idea to at least start in the general direction of your home to the location where he went missing.
I've heard lots of stories from people (and my own experience as well) that if there is no other factors in what direction they head in - they'll often tend to head towards home. Cats & dogs have an amazing sense of direction no matter how far away they are.
Maybe it will give you a place to start at least?
Best of luck with your search.
thank you victor, this gives me new hope. i'm really starting to worry. it's been 5 days now that he is missing. i have been putting up posters as well. not near as many as 200 but i feel i need to get to that point. i'm on foot, no car, only train...so it is taking some time. he has no ID either which is worrying me, but if your dog didn't maybe it's not such a big deal.
yes, i've started working my way south to our place putting up posters, etc. though he went missing in Laim and we live in Solln. there is quite a distance and we traveled by S and U bahn. i've heard barks outside my window and i can't help but look each time. i have had the thought he may work his way here...i would be so amazed. he is quite young, but you never know.

you might at least ask/force/get the guy to pay the costs incurred (including perhaps time) looking for the poor little pup. I drive/cycle through Laim everyday so will keep my eyes open. If you can get to the Hirschgarten in Laim it might be worth strolling around there looking for him. No water that I know of but he may hang out there. Its small enough to cover on foot. Laim S Bahn station, also reachable on bus 51 which I think goes from Solln
ah yes, hirschgarten...we've been thru there twice now...have put some signs up. i was looking for him there too. i went to a park just south of westend, not sure the name, but i'm trying to post in most parks. thank you for looking out for him. we miss him so much!

I can imagine - one of our cats disappeared for 4 days once. I think she was quite close by most of the time. We were worried sick although she strolled back in in the middle of the night eventually

Good luck, I hope you're reunited soon. This website gives some tips too:
http://www.petrescue.com/library/find-pet.htmFor what it's worth, I'd had a bassett hound who'd escaped several times for 5-7 day benders, but always returned or located. Don't underestimate sense of smell. Get out in the neighborhood. Canvass as wide an area as possible, dogs can move a few miles in a pretty short span of time.

Jan 5 2005, 5:58 pm
In that line of thinking, be sure to walk home after every trip out. I know it may be far, but do it and leave your smell behind. Make sure you take a safe route though if possible, otherwise, leave your smell leading to someone in the neighborhood that can be on the look out for him 24/7.

This thread breaks my heart...i can't offer any better advice than that that's already been given, but just to let you know that I'm on the look out too and I've shown his pic to the people at work. I live in the Westend so my eyes are peeled, I promise!
Please please let us know as soon as you find him, cos I'm sure you will! Good luck, and try and stay positive

I feel so bad for you. I don't have a dog but I love them. So, today at lunch, I'm going to take a spin around between Laim and northward towards Gern/Moosach. You never know. I will try to help while helping myself get out of this stupid office for an hour!
Of course, if I found him, I'd have to pu him into my boyfriend's car - which would piss him off, but TOO BAD!!
