Safety on night buses and trains - Berlin

I'm looking for a flat in Berlin at the moment, and might be going for an area like Treptow or Steglitz (well, possibly also somewhere completely different). It would be great though to live somewhere where you can get home nicely from i.e. Mitte on a nightbus without running into any problems on the way..

Does anyone know of any areas that are best avoided, or is the public transport at night normally quite nice? (well, safe?)

Berlin is safe in general, buses and train during the night are OK.

Some areas in Treptow might be populated by skinheads.

Steglitz is quite safe.

I worked in A PUB IN Steiglitz granted it was ten years ago.used to finish at middnight and return to friedrichstrase .young female and alone never had one problem

until midnight it is no problem getting anywhere. after that in SOME areas of treptow and steglitz it could happen that you have to wait some ten minutes and walk some kilometres. as long as it's near an S-Bahn or an U-Bahn it is no problem at the weekend nights - cause they have night service then. during the week it is no problem if you're close to an u-bahn station cause they have busses which replace the U-Bahn (and have the same line-name just with an "N" instead of an "u") after 12 (every half an hour). Of course there are numerous additional night buses but it's a bit more complicated then...
skinheads are not a problem per se (please don't start a discussion here) - I'd say it's dumb drunken youth groups in general and you're probably more likely to run into them (specially on the weekend) on your way back to Treptow as to Steglitz...

There was an article a few days ago where a "yoof" spat in a bus driver's face when asked for his ticket. The Tagesspiegel has items at more or less weekly intervals, although they're usually about attacks on public transport workers rather than fellow-passengers.

anyway, you may have noticed that skinheads (I guess it doesn't matter if they're racists or not?) are not the only violent people in Berlin. Or in the world...

Night buses, trams & trains in Berlin are fine. As mentioned earlier, during the week the u-bahns are replaced by night buses from about 1-4 and so are the Metrobusses (N* rather than M*)

No, they are not the only ones, but if you are not white and you meet skinheads after midnight you REALLY have to be careful. Anyway, I doubt the OP is a non-white and I am not really so interested in discussing about NS problems with someone who think SHs are harmless.

Skinheads = f**kheads unless you're talking about the original bluebeat / ska crowd, which consisted of black Jamaicans and white working-class UK kids both. Means it really pays to tread very carefully around them regardless of the colour of your skin IMHO...
