chicken pie
just discovered this fantastic forum! does anyone know a good restaurant / pub in munich that has english food, eg. a yummy chicken / mushroom pie etc???
Dancing Queen
OH POOR YOU - YOU SOUND DESPERATE! I DON'T LIKE MUNICH FOOD AND WOULD LUV TO KNOW WHERE WE CAN GET PROPER FOOD WITH REAL VEGETABLES!! rolleyes.gif
Keydeck
Real vegetables?! And what the flying froggit do you think the ones here are?
Sanielle
no offence really, but why would any one voluntarily seek out english food?
Sanielle
and on the subject of english food. is it true that you are now changing the name of yougurt to fermented mlik? heard it on the radio this morning... either that or a really odd dream
Keydeck
Apparently the EU have been having a go again, so this is quite likely to happen. Most will actually have to be labelled "mild alternate-culture heat-treated fermented milk".
Sanielle
you got to be kidding.. how disgusting is that
chicken pie
ok, uk food is not that great, but i miss it! probably now that i can't buy it, i want it, although chicken & mushroom pies really are yummy!! but since living here i've been wanting certain english foods/snacks! but if anyone does come a a place where you can buy uk food (apart from the overpriced/little choice food halls in Karstadt etc) then let me know..pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease biggrin.gif

There is a fantastic English shop called Pomeroy and Winterbottom.

Reichenbachstraÿe 38
Gärtnerplatzviertel
Munich, Bayern
DE, 80469

Its just beside Fraunhoferstrasse (U1/U2)

They have a really good selection of all those lovely English necesities.
Crisps, chocolates, sauces, tea, drinks, christmassy stuff... I could go on, they have loads of stuff.
bex
they now sell english/irish/aussie food stuff at kilians/ned kellys in a little Kiosk.
Not a huge choice but enough. and they have pies, all though they are tinned.

also you can try www.expatshopping.com
I always have received great service from them and is delivered within 4 days normally!

Hmmm... just had to chase them for my order placed last Monday - they had delayed delivery as they were still waiting on the Luxury Mincemeat !! So I've changed it to the bog standard, and it will be shipped today !!!

Fray Bentos - Steak & Pigmy Pie !!! mmmmmmm

Hiya
I was also going to mention Kilian's pie-in-a-tin (Fray Bentos-style).
You could always, shock horror, make one?
You can buy ready to roll puff pastry in larger supermarkets (it is in the fridge, next to things like strudel pastry, pizza bases and yeast) and a tin of chicken in cream sauce (type of thing you use to fill vol-a-vents).
If you can't find chicken in cream sauce then buy a tin of mushroom soup (the Erasco Cream of Mushroom in the big sachet, not the powder, is nice) and half a cooked chicken (remove the skin and bones and chop it into largish bits). Put the chicken chunks into a baking dish, tip the soup over it and top with the rolled out pastry.
This will be cheaper than buying that tin job.
http://www.hwatson.force9.co.uk/cookbook/r...ickenhampie.htm is another recipe (replace the ham with mushrooms).
Ta ra,
Katrina

I have never quite got the whole 'Fray Bentos' thing.
I think their pies are terrible!
Take Katrinas advice and make one, a lot better.
bex
i serious think I should invest in a cooker, then I could make pies and sell them to all the expats!
mdfbayern
Hehe - I make up a batch of meals every weekend, so that they are ready to reheat in the evenings when I come home from work. I've even tempted Uncle Jamal into eating my Croque Monsieurs for snacks or lunch !!!

Maybe if this Company goes Tits up I could always go back to my old profession of Chef de Cuisine, and knock out some stuff for all the expat community !!
marka
I was about to rant then re: the comment about English food...but I am biting my lip and won't rise. I mean how can we compete with sloppy joes, hot dogs made from ... from... well your guess is as good as mine and the crowning glory meat loaf.
Keydeck
Who, incidentally, is playing in Brum tonight.
bex
I wish I could do that. The closest I come to is cooking a ton of veg and potatoes and then I fry it up as bubble and squeak with a gammon steak or something when needed.

Ah ha! Thats given me an idea, a small group of us at work take it in turns cooking lunch and its soon my turn again...watch them all pull a face when I serve them bubble and squeak!
mdfbayern
Bex - you want to get yourself a combination Microwave / Grill if you don't have much space, that way you get the best of both worlds - they are not expensive either.

But please - keep the Bubble & Squeak at home !!!
don_riina
@mdf - I'll pack in my crappy day job and go right into business with you my son!

I try and do a fair bit of cooking at the weekend. Saves so much time in the week, and some dishes that take a bit of time to prep are just not possible to do in the miniscule slice of time between getting home and the start of 'Stenders.

As to pies, make 'em yourself. With ready made pastry available its simple stuff. Don't go buying tins of soup and stuff for the filling though, if you are gonna make something, just make up a LOAD of filling mix, and you can freeze it off in little bags, and then just get a bag out of the freezer in the morning. Get home, open your pastry, pop it in a pie tin, add filling, eggwash, half an hour in the oven, and bob's your uncle.

Also, I WILL rise to the bait. English food in its most commonly known format is utter utter crap. That is because most English people are raised to believe that vegetables should always be cooked in boiling water for 3 hours, and that meat is meant to be roasted until "done". Also, frying stuff in 3 inches of lard is highly popular.

However, you will actually find that there are some very good English dishes, and the British Isles have some of the best meats in the world. Just a pre-emptive strike to anyone about to mention BSE, I am sorry, but NOT ONE of the decent breeds were ever infected. The only meat that was infected was crappy dairy herds which is only used to make cheap burgers, and to ship to the french to give them something more to moan about. If you are gonna eat shitty hamburgers from a kebab van, then BSE is probably the least of your worries anyway.
Oh, and if you like Chicken Tikka Masala, vindaloo or onion bhaji, then you like an English dish.
Certainly, food in England, although not wonderful, is in my opinion far better than the offering of pork, pork, pork, cabbage, pork or pork that the inventive German chefs have conjured up.
marka
I just want to add one small point.

It isnt English food that is crap...its the soulless people that try to cook english food that are crap. There is no rule that says broccoli has to be boiled for 3 hours instead of steamed to al dente perfection or that a guiness and steak pie has to be made with crap meat, insipid gravy and a pastry crust you could reseal your windows with.

Its about being passionate about food. Baked beans on toast can be turned into a culinary extravaganza with some imagination. Maybe in large we lack the passion for food...but not everyone ! Then you can taste English food as it is meant to be. Just like my Gran used to make smile.gif
Keydeck
Don, although I obviously doff my cap at your superior culinery knowledge I have eaten some fantastic dishes here which have nothing to do with pork. Beef, Chicken, Duck, some awesome game meats and so on and so on. I could easily name lots of "German" restaurants without even thinking where I'd consider the food to be excellent.
don_riina
Yeah, Keydeck I know. I have also eaten some great stuff here, but you know, any chance to have a winge about the krouts and all that.
wink.gif
Keydeck
Furry Muff.
Katrina
I only suggested the soup as sauce thing as Chicken Pie didn't seem like a natural born pie maker, well, if you are the sort of person who would cook anyway, you wouldn't ask about buying one would you?
I do like a nice steak and ale pie though and my mate Alan (who might be along to Günther's later) does a fantastic steak and kidney pudding.
British food can be bad but it can be great too, it is certainly more cosmopolitan than most give it credit and my mouth waters at the thought of grilled sea trout or a perfect yorkshire pudding or an apple crumble (why are German magazines full of crumble recipes at the moment? I even saw one which used rosewater last week! pffft).
I do like German/Austrian food too though, like Käs'spätzn, Knödel, Tafelspitz, lamb's leaf lettuce salads dressed with pumpkin seed oil...
I think I just like food really.

Getting back to the the original question:
Somewhere on Maistrasse there is/was an English Pub ... as far as I know I've only ever been in it once... and it wasn't very exciting. I believe it did food but this was some years ago and i have no idea whether it is still there... James the Dining Club restaurant guru may be able to help out???

The Victorian House - on Frauenstrasse does Angloid food - and is very good - but I don't think I've ever seen Chicken Pies on the menu...
mdfbayern
Not sure about the German restaurants as I don't go out to eat that often - mainly cos I'm a f*cking great chef, and the family prefers my cooking !! hehe
Keydeck
That one on Maistraße is called "The Winchester Arms". Haven't been myself, so don't know about the food, or if the pub is even still there.
Granny
I've just made a pot of mince and tatties, I like mine with carrot, onion and beef links but I have to do without the beef links as German sausages are just not the same. I make most of the dishes I would do at home and can usually find most of the ingredients. There is no reason; other than no cooker, not to have home cooking, so get your penie on and get in the kitchen.
chicken pie
@ katarina: you're right about not being the natural pie-maker!!!
@mdfbayern: open a restaurant pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease biggrin.gif

i've seen the range at Kilians shop but a. hardly any choice, b. pies in tins... c. no chicken and mushroom pie sad.gif Victorian House also has no pies sad.gif maybe The Winchester Arms is the answer, but i can't seem to find anything about it on the net.
looks like i am doomed to try making one - but i don't want to taint my memory of what they really taste like with the experimental taste that i probably will achieve!!
i know that uk food is not that 'special' but its home! doesn't anyone else have 'craving' for everyday uk food???
