This thing is nothing more that a tweaked MSI Wind U100.. If you look around online you can find it for 20-40 Eur Less than the Aldi price.
Here's a review of the device

Looks like this box is shipped with MS Windows, whereas 'Acer Aspire One' is shipped with Linux (and hence its cheaper by 50 Euros). Apart from that, its not much different from 'Acer Aspire One'.

The acer with the 160 gb disk comes with XP...

It seems that the units with the "Flash" memory have linux.. the Larger solid state memory units arrive with XP..
fRe4k
It comes with 'Linpus Linux' (from the Taiwan based Linux Group). Probably, it can be shipped with other OS's too (dont know about that).

My GF bought one of the previous versions of them. crap build, poor performance and regular blue screen of death.

Surely thats were the 3yr warranty comes into play...

That's what die Frau always says about Aldi stuff ... but just you try to collect!

She once came home in 2002 with two EUR500 Medion car sat navs from Aldi ("sat nav with free palm computer!"). They were without a doubt the least dependable, hardest-to-use pieces of consumer electronics I ever had occasion to use. I somehow used my ham radio background to figure out how the stuff worked for a brief period, but when I became completely frustrated, I tried to take them back. The process of exchanging them (much less getting one's money back) was more complicated than the operating instructions for a linear particle accelerator. In fact, even more complicated than figuring out how to completely reinstall everything for every single trip ... until one discovered upon upgrade to XP that the software for the satnav units didn't work with XP because the taiwanese entity that produced the originals no longer existed.

The ultimate joke is that granma just ended up buying a TomTom and our cars have built-in satnav.

I remain convinced that Aldi's hard good "special offers" are the 21st-century equavalent of the Soviet-era GUM. "It is the third Wednesday of October, which is snowboot day ... so you will buy snowboots!" And all the Hausfrauen abide Stepford Wives style.

It´s actually a very simple, straight-forward procedure ... provided you return the item in question within 2 months after the purchase date:

ALDI Süd´s Garantieregelung

It´s 1 month at ALDI Nord ...

Or you can just avoid the hassle and not by your electronics at Aldi. Aldi is a food store. If you want Electronics then goto a proper
electronics store. If your hungry and need to buy food you don't go to your local Saturn/Media Markt do you? Aldi/Median electronics
and computers are always Pieces of sh*t. Don't fall for their crap just because the price look good, in the end your only buying crap
B-Ware products or things that look cool and are actually completely worthless.

As for any non mainstream GPS Devices, the price may look good, but map updates will either be expensive or non-existent.
If you want a propper GPS devices that has constant map updates and very good support stay with the main line products
like TomTom or Navigon

I wouldn't even buy food at Aldi as the same rules apply to the quality of that and you're going to eat it.

Hmm... how is it an offer when Aldi have been selling the Akoya 10" at the same price for a long time anyway... ok they added some software you probably don't want. Also Aldi seem to have made a little mistake it is actually the 1211 (not 1210) as it includes Bluetooth. It kicks ass over an Acer Aspire One.

In truth it is a rebadge MSI Wind with WLAN draft-N rather than just b/g, so I would rate it over the MSI Wind. I have a friend at work who bought one and it is actually a nice netbook. As for Aldi's return policy, yeah, I wouldn' like to go there...

Please show me where you can buy this cheaper!? The only option I know is SeeMüller down Schillerstr which sell all the Medion returns, this is an option.

Keep in mind that the Saturn/Media Markt housebrand "microstar" is actually Medion.

Actually they didn't because the Bluetooth is not built-in, but rather a USB Dongle. Read the paper article again.

Actually it is not.. Microstar, is actually a Taiwanese company called MSI, which has nothing to do with Medion, Saturn or Media Markt.

Medion/Tevion/CyberMaxx, are also their own company. They just happen to sell exclusively to Aldi.

Medion AG is a German company which sells consumer electronics products. It operates in Europe, the United States, and the Asia-Pacific region. The main products are computers, TVs, refrigerators, toasters, and fitness equipment. The company is becoming popular in Europe but has failed in the North American market. The company's main popularity is due to the products they produce being low cost, but usually high quality although this has not always been the case it is a statement that can be said for many of the later Medion products. However a recent spate of defective products has caused a major downturn in profits

So why did my microstar computer, baught at Satrun, have a Medion customer services number included? And they even bothered to take care of me with a problem?
Owain Glyndwr
maybe they have a customer services agreement with Medion...

Edit: the Medion Akoya Mini E1210 is an OEM version of the MSI Wind PC, so they are indeed the same computer but not the same manufacturer.
Darkknight
Medion rarely actually make there own computers/parts. They source the cheapest parts (B-Ware) from various OEM's. Many Medion PC's are actually renamed/tweaked MSI's.
As for Support, its prob. as OG mentioned. MSI are OEM's. They don't do Tech Support. So they prob. farm that out to Medion in Germany.
Guy
Medion own the name Microstar in Germany, but Micro-Star is MSI.

One thing you shouldnt forget when you buy expensive crap (one piece>150 Euro) for your business from Aldi:
The bill you get, does not meet the legal requirements to reclaim your VAT. Of course in most cases the Finanzamt wont notice...
Johnny English
Ha! Avoid all this tat. The new Macbooks get released tomorrow.

And if the rumors are correct one of them will be in the $800 range
