To replace an original from the UK

we brought our sky box over with us from the uk,and have been using it for the last 6 months but its broke on us, can you buy boxes over here that will pick up sky, we have the satellite dish fitted up.
if so where can you buy them and how much. thanks.

Hmm... Initially I would say contact Bavaria Satellite, but getting just the box can be expensive from them.

First issue is do you actually pay for sky service or just use the Free to air channels, if the later then best would be to get someone you know to buy you a Freesat box and you can pay them for the trouble & the P&P. I used www.satbuyer.co.uk to get my sky box and they also sell freesat boxes.

I would suggest you look on ebay for a second hand box...that's where I've always bought mine...although you (probably) won't get a guarantee on the box.

Next best alternative would be a new Freesat box from the UK..although Freesat doesn't yet have the full range of UK channels (Five/Fiver/Five US still not available)
SpiderPig
What make and model is your sky box..

If you buy from the net somewhere, you still need to contact sky and get the card matched to the box..

A repair from Bavsat is usually 100€ and this avoids having to call sky...

They also have secondhand boxes for sale..

Now waiting about either...

Thanks everyone its a Sony must be about 10yrs old we dont subscribe to sky just have the free to view channels, would this mean we would still have to contact sky? When looking for a new box what is it i'm looking for to tell me it will fit with my sky dish, [prob a stupid blonde question.]
SpiderPig
Sony....

Ah, chuck it away..
chumbawumba
Both Freesat & sky point at the Astra 2 satellite, if can you wait till november Humax will be releasing a Freesat HD with PVR. Else if you have a more conservative budget you should be able to get a Freesat SD for about 100GBP.
SpiderPig
Chumba..

Freesat have been promising this PVR for the past 3 months and still no sign of it.

The OP may not have 2 connections from the dish and installing a second fed could be impossible because the house wireing does not allow...

The SD boxes are available from Currys online, but will only be delivered to a UK adress, thus losing time.. and costs postage.

A new SD sky box will cost about 50GBP more than a HD freesat box and the OP will have one TODAY!

The OP will also still receive Ch5 sky3 and the US tv channels too.

Should the OP wish to subscribe to sky in the future, they can do so with a SKY digibox.. but never with a Freeshat Box.

Your go!

If you dont actually want to subscribe to sky and already have your dish pointing at Astra2 then you can get hold of any old 20€ Baumarktreciever to pick up all the usual UK freeview broadcasts.

If you actually want Freesat, whioch is different (I had to learn this too) then youll need a dedicated reciever which you cant get in Germany yet. They are freely available on eBay though. Personally I can live without the Freesat digital goodies ("Red Button" etc) and am happy to watch the freeview stuff, which is all BBC and ITV plus channel 4 and a pile of "Reality Channel" junk. Works for me.

But no ch5 sky 3 or US channels.

No EPG...

No chance of subscribing to sky either.

I was just about to say same thing but saw this message. We have two satellite dishes German/English. We get all the channels through the one receiver. I used to have Sky, until they messed up with my sister's new credit card number. At that time we had an analog receiver for German tv and the sky box.

Your go!

Ahh.. your maturity proceeds you... what is it with you and Sky, clearly the OP doesn't pay for sky services.
The Baumarktreciever suggestion even sounds good, though we don't know of what the OP really wants SKY, PVR or HD functionality.
Below is a quote I got from Edwin this year:

QUOTE
Sky Only:
NEW: 550 Euros
USED: from 375 Euros (subject to availability)

Admittidly ebay is an option or if he knows someone in the UK he could get it arranged, otherwise.
* Freesat box 53GBP (66euros) + P&P (using friend in UK)
* Skybox 99GBP (123) + P&P
* freesat HD 129 GBP (160euros)
If P&P from a UK address for such a box is over 250 yoyos I would be amazed...

My whole satellite setup brand new with SKY HD cost 550 euros (self-installed, first time, no prior experiance) & if I remember rightly some time ago, you were selling your Sky HD setup (2nd hand) for about 900yoyos.

Anyhow I'm sure the OP can make an informed decision.

looked into the freesat but they are around £150 plus delivery at argos then you have to find someone willing to post it out to you plus at least another £10, then you not sure if it will work plus the time factor, just cannt wait that long, gave Bavaria Satellitte a ring they were out out within the hour everything sorted. thanks to them

You obviously did not read what Edwin sent you..

The 550€ for a new receiver includes a card and the first years hosting fee..

Remove that hosting fee and you are in the region of 350€
Previously owned from 375€... Remove the hosting fee...

No brainer!

Better receiver than a Humax pile of shite AND upgradable to Sky at any time!

Not only that, as you see, the OP was sorted out within 3 hours of their cry for help!

I am sure Ebay or Commet wouldnt give service like that!
lazybum
I bought one from ebay once... didn't cost much
